You'd rather live in Atlanta than Raleigh? Seriously? Raleigh is located in the top 5 on just about every 'best places to live' list out there. Remember, we're not talking night lives and 'fun things to do'. These are people with wives and families.
3/12/2011 2:05:05 PM
For some coaches the night life is the important part...Gilespie to GT?

Here in Atlanta, we're just a little more progressive and ahead of the curve than other cities. <Farts into wine glass and sniffs>

Those "top places to live" lists almost always consider job availability and the ease of starting a business. Those things don't matter in the context of this argument.

Yes we are more attractive than GT. Anyone who says otherwise is a damned fool.

How about a real candidate? Missouri State's Cuonzo Martin.I'm high on Cuonzo for several reasons, including recent success by the Gene Keady coaching tree: Weber, Stallings, Lavin, Painter
3/13/2011 2:43:49 PM
Missouri State is one of the slowest teams in the countryNC State fans won't stand for that

3/13/2011 6:06:13 PM
I think we'd nab a guy like Stallings or Alford before we go with someone with zero high major experience. Doubt we go with a mid major unless one just blows Yow away in an interview
3/13/2011 6:15:08 PM
3/13/2011 6:41:58 PM
I agree it's common sense, but obviously others in here didnt grasp that...
3/13/2011 6:46:43 PM
I think you guys are missing the most important difference. At GT you can have one good year and get an automatic perpetual rollover contract that can only be terminated with an up front buyout of the remaining 5 years.
3/13/2011 7:56:41 PM
hahahah, $7.2 million
3/13/2011 10:27:02 PM
I mean, sure, get someone from a major conference if you can, but no washouts. No to Alford.
3/13/2011 11:53:52 PM
I'd rather have Alford than most other mid-majors out there. Dude's won big at every mid major stop, and he at least had Iowa trending in the right direction. Won 2 tournament titles, too. Iowa is a hard place to win at....IMO, he might have an axe to grind to prove he can win at the high major level.[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 12:02 AM. Reason : ]
3/14/2011 12:00:59 AM
Alford couldn't win in the NCAAs, though. And he hasn't blown people away at New Mexico.I don't get why we should be above hiring a mid major. I don't know who we're going to lure from a major conference that 1) would actually come 2) has been successful in the NCAAs and in the conference and 3) isn't a risky hire. You say Stallings from Vandy, and I'd take him, but the guy coaching against him in the first round from Richmond runs the Georgetown/JTIII Princeton system, not the Herb system. But that's boring and we want a coach that will hold dunk practice and talk in an Italian voice.
3/14/2011 12:13:30 AM
3/14/2011 12:28:28 AM
Stallings wouldn't be on my personal list, I'm just thinking about the situation logically. IMO, we'll want to hire SOMEONE with high major experience. I know Mooney is probably our #1 mid-major guy, but IMO and based on what i've read, I'm not sure we'll get that far down the list. Too risky and there doesn't appear to be a 'can't miss' candidate. I honestly believe this is going to be an ego hire for Yow. She's been chomping at the bit to make a major hire, well here's her chance. I really think she's going to aim really high...now whether that works or not, we'll see. I, personally think we'll ask Miller (slim chance), Turgeon (very slim chance), and then Brey. I think Brey would take it and I think he'll be high on our list. He doesn't really excite me, but it's better than taking a chance on a guy that'll likely flame out. Brey won't have the academic restrictions that he does at ND. He might actually work out...who knows. I do think if Brey didn't come you'd see us approach Stallings or Alford before Mooney. Just my opinion...I don't claim to know anything more than what everyone else can read on the interweb[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 12:34 AM. Reason : ]
3/14/2011 12:32:41 AM
Speaking of Alford....How many 'can't miss' coaches failed at Iowa? Lickliter was the next big thing, and he was horrible. Fran McCaffery has struggled thus far. Tom Davis had Alford like results. Lute did well there. That said, Iowa has never been a job that's got a lot of advantages compared to its peers. I could get behind Alford from what I know of him. Great lineage, done really really well everywhere he's been (2nd winningest coach ever at Iowa, seemed to be at least trending upward there). I really think Alford might have an axe to grind to prove he can do it in a big league....I'd guess he'd work twice as hard this time around and he probably learned a lot since his Iowa stint
3/14/2011 12:43:35 AM
3/14/2011 12:45:53 AM
^ not only did he play under Knight, he was one of the best players he ever coached. IIRC, and I'm not the authority on Alford's tenure, but it wasn't even his wins & losses that got him in trouble at Iowa. I think he had quite a few off the court issues culminating in one of his players get charged with raping someone.....he stepped down because of it. Like I said, he'd need to be interviewed and vetted, but I think he's probably learned a lot about the types of players he wants in his program from that experience.
3/14/2011 12:59:43 AM
the real question about Steve Alford is is he 6'2" or 6'3"]
