I remember him being WAY worse than 25% from the arc...

Clearly, you remembered wrong. Giving talented players the green light to shoot the ball and make plays is important, especially for a new coach coming in. It shows Leslie that coach has confidence in him(whether it's warranted or not) and can only help matters at this stage.

Leslie clearly wants to develop an outside shot if he wants to have any success in the NBA. Who knows, maybe he'll work hard on it during the off-season and get his 3pt% up around 30% or so. If a player like Leslie can just present the slightest threat to drop a 3 on his defender, then it just makes him that much more of a mismatch. Having said that, I'm sure if he continues to be abysmal from the arc that Gottfried will reel him back in.

Hey, anytime you can have a 25% shooter taking more 3's, you've gotta do it.

I thought he took way more than 28 threes. Maybe it's because almost every one he took stood out so much because they were fucking horrible shots.

I mean...if he can improve his shot, then by all means, take more shots. It's not like our big men have never improved the outside shot....HELLO KENNY INGE....

Hmm, I was one of Leslie's biggest advocates last year, and even the ones he made seemed ill advised.

i think the only problem with leslie was that he looked hesitant when he took them, like "i know i shouldn't do this, coach is gonna be on my ass, but, im wide open". You could tell he had like a thought-moment as he was shooting.

We need more than Scott Wood to be a threat, which will actually open up Wood more if there's someone else on the team (not saying it has to be Leslie of course).

Isn't Tyler Harris supposed to have a good outside game? I could have sworn I read that he was one of those guys who grew late, and as a result was a shooter that grew in to a bigger body. With both him and CJL working inside and out, we could have a pretty dynamic offense next year.

The only reason the ones he made seemed ill advised is because we were so caught up in our mindset that he shouldn't take them at all.

We all went, "Leslie! What are you Thi-... Oh, ok, good shot I guess. But don't do it anymore!"

If he had made 3 more threes last season, he would be at 30% which is close to average for non-snipers behind the arc.

I don't have a problem with him taking the shot if,

1. he's open and,

2. We've at least tried to play some offense

Good point

If he were a better three-point shooter, he would definitely be a better three-point shooter

If he had made 3 more threes last season, he would've shot and missed 9 more to keep his percentages the same

My point was not that if he were a better three point shooter that he'd be a better three point shooter... It was that his numbers aren't that horrible

The reason the 3-point percentage is higher than most think it should be is he took a lot of long range 2s that you might group in the 3s. However, after yesterday's press conference, he seemed more mature and I think he will be much much better this coming year.

I don't see Leslie as the answer here. Brown and CJ Williams both had flashes and looked pretty comfortable from the outside at times. Leslie should be a 4th option at best from behind the arc, and only if a better option doesn't present itself within the first 10-15 seconds of running the offense.

That said, if he makes a couple and develops a little confidence, it would draw defenders out of the lane and create chances for him to play off the dribble against other bigs or make room for our guards and forwards to cut to the rim. The mid-long range game and being tougher with the ball in the paint are the two biggest areas where he needs improvement on offense.

After watching videos of Gottfrieds offense back when he was first hired, I don't think CJ is often going to be in a position to take a 3 honestly. He will either be on the high post at the free throw line or on the weakside block in half court sets. He may have a green light, but that doesn't mean he is going to get many opportunities.

This isn't about Leslie, but where is the Harrow news supposed to go?

Quote :
"Hodge: Brown was Wolfpack's best point guard last season

By Tim Hall

Updated at 12:41 p.m.

N.C. State hoops found out a lot about its future this week, more specifically the immediate future for the 2011-12 season. C.J. Leslie didn't file paperwork to enter the NBA draft, choosing to remain in school. But his fellow classmate Ryan Harrow is transferring. The release from the school phrased it as a mutual decision between he and head coach Mark Gottfried.

Since the news broke that Harrow was gone some have wondered if N.C. State is better off without him. In Jeff Gravley's recent column he says some teammates began to question Harrow's toughness after he sat out of two mid-season games with an illness. One of those was the Carolina game.

Former N.C. State hoops star and a regular voice for Wolfpack basketball Julius Hodge thought the change was best for both parties.

"I think it's the best decision for both him and for the N.C. State basketball team," Hodge told Adam and Joe on 99.9 The Fan.

When pressed to elaborate on why the move was also the best for N.C. State, he pointed to the guy on the team who he thought was already the top point guard.

"Lorenzo Brown is a point guard first. I think on the court this year he was our best point guard when he played that position. It would have come down to a case to whether Ryan can actually play the two for us, be able to play the two on offense and still defend the point guard," Hodge said. "Going up against Lorenzo, he's 6-5, strong, can shoot, dribble, jump and he can lock down. I think it was a little tough for him (Harrow)."

Even if Ryan Harrow lost out to Brown as a starting point guard, his loss is still an obvious blow to depth at the position. Hodge mentioned that Brown will be forced to take on more of a "Nolan Smith" role and play the full 40 minutes more often, which he doesn't think will be an issue.

Harrow also took heat for being too emotional or concerned with criticism aimed at himself or the team. That was highlighted by a lengthy letter written to Wolfpack fans in which Harrow admitted that negative comments on message boards and blogs actually get to him. And that was written before he even put on a State uniform.

"I was the first to say, the letter to the fans, I hated that idea. You don't write a letter to the fans. You don't want them to be your friends at first. You have to prove yourself and then everyone will love you if you do the right thing. I didn't like that from the beginning."

However fans viewed Harrow and his time at N.C. State, the one fact is... he's gone."

I don't hate Harrow I wish him well. I am pissed that he bailed on us and left us in a tough spot, but he's gotta make the decision thats best for him.

He wasn't an ACC caliber starting PG last year, that much is clear.

It seemed like he might develop into one but it wasn't a certainty or anything.

Since a missed 3 pointer usually turns into easy points for the opponent, you have to shoot better than 33% from 3 in order for that to be a positive play for us.

Or we could rebound better.

i'm all for optimism, but this guy is retarded:

Quote :
"Lorenzo Brown could be one of the top point guards in the ACC next season, and with sharpshooter Scott Wood., Mr. Glue-guy C.J. Williams, and physical Richard Howell working with Leslie operating in the high post and getting some freedom to do his thing, State can finish among the top four in the ACC and reach the NCAA Tournament with a decent seed."

he's all "Leslie was selfish and only concerned with his own skills in his presser"

then he's all "Letting Leslie 'do his thing' they'll be top 4 and get a good NCAA tourney seed!"
