The national has a new album out. They're doing a live concert on vevo tonight. Album sounds good so far from what I've heard...but I'm sure it will grow on me and I'll be done.

^^They're coming to Raleigh as Reflection Eternal on June 12th at Lincoln. Should be pretty sweet.

it feels a little blandbut i didn't like their last one either, so who knows
5/16/2010 12:21:37 PM
apologies is a classic in my mind but the two albums since are still very strong. different styles from album to album but they each have that distinct WP feel with continuous momentum and intensity throughout. (disclosure: i enjoy just about anything spencer krug has a hand in.)

I think this line from the Pitchfork review of This is Happening sums up what LCD Soundsystem does and why James Murphy is important pretty nicely:

i don't really hear the stylistic changes... just seems to me like the same style with less interesting songs/melodies
5/17/2010 1:23:11 PM
someone explain Beck to me. as someone who has never really been a big Beck fan and thus hasn't spent much time with his music it seems some of his albums are so completely 180 degrees from one another it doesn't even seem like the same artist. That being said, i really love the album sea change. Do any of his newer albums (after Midnight Vultures) have that same kind of sound? I'm really over the Odelay stylings and don't want to waste my time listening to his other works if they are in that realm[Edited on May 17, 2010 at 4:14 PM. Reason : clarity]

the discography i was looking at had all of the dates out of order, so it made it look like he had released a bunch of material after Sea Change. not sure what kind of order lala has them in. 3 albums isn't so bad.

Far?!?!?! Thanks
5/19/2010 1:15:24 PM
If you can get past the wince-inducing lyrics, this new Janelle Monae is surprisingly good pop music.
5/19/2010 5:11:20 PM
I'll check out that Far album. I used to listen to them back in HS. I saw Jonah do a solo set once, but I was drunk and I forget where it was or who he played with.

You don't think Guero is similar to Odelay?
5/19/2010 8:45:48 PM
actually now that you mention it, i think it kind of is similar to odelay. and mutations is probably the closest thing in his catalog to sea change.
5/19/2010 8:50:49 PM
I was gonna say, that's precisely why Beck is the fucking man.and I am itching to hear that new Far. W&S is easily one of my favorite albums ever.

saw them live last year in NYC. Definately a fun band to watch in smaller venues.Love the one dude who plays the saw blade with a violin bow.

^^ had that same thought.some good stuff in this album... although granted i fucking love wolf parade.
5/21/2010 7:10:11 AM
i'm immersed in Janelle MonĂ¡e - "The ArchAndroid"really good visuals in the ol' noggintoo bad "of montreal" gets under my skin and taints track 14 for me
5/21/2010 10:49:53 AM
^ I dig it, too, but why Of Montreal in quotes, as if they're some theoretical band? They've been making music for well over a decade, and their early stuff is markedly different and actually much better than their current stuff. You can take the quotes out; I assure you Of Montreal is a very real band.
5/21/2010 11:24:52 AM
now that's just sillynow i'm going to refer to them as: [OF MONTREAL]
5/21/2010 11:33:44 AM
Cool...I'll refer to you as "marko"Look "marko"..."punctuation" can actually be an "important" thing when referring to "bands" or anything. It can make it seem less real or legitimate or serious. That's the only "point" I was trying to "make," "marko." I just find it an "odd" mistake considering "bands" are almost never put in "quotes."[Edited on May 21, 2010 at 12:18 PM. Reason : .]
5/21/2010 12:10:50 PM
anyway
5/21/2010 12:24:01 PM
So, most people here might still not like it, but I figured I'd post up one full track from our new album. But the track I am posting up is a huge departure from our normal sound and is the 2nd to last track on our upcoming album. We are a progressive metal band but the song I am posting is a really atmospheric electronics-based rock track with 90% of the vocals being traditional singing vocals.http://www.purevolume.com/calledtoarmsThe 2nd track up there is a 5 minute teaser that shows a lot of material from the album, obviously in our more usual style. We aren't officially promoting it still so I posted it on purevolume instead of the real sites we'll use to promote. Anyway, maybe some of you will like the first track I posted since the non-metal fans here always complained about the vocals in the past. So this one is for you (Also, the other guitarist and I really just wanted to right something totally out of our element and were really excited how it turned out).
5/21/2010 12:24:17 PM
i don't think the of montreal track is that bad, but i'm also a pretty big skeletal lamping apologist (nor can i stand their earlier material).
