They are both just digital bits.

I know they aren't equal, the SMS service rides on top of the call setup channels.

But on my end, if I don't have a text plan I should be able to send out a message and it will be received on the other end and that persons carrier will have to handle how they get it. If they have a "data" plan, they get it that way, if not, they get it via the SMS channel with all the associated costs for that plan.

if only.

they might receive it..but they or you will be charged a per text cost to do it

i mean, technically everything is just bits now..

i'm sure eventually we'll just pay for unlimited internet and all use a service like google voice to handle everything we want to do..bbbbut not yet

Yup, that is what I'm planning to do provided I can get an invite.

At the moment, I'm trying to figure out if this bing cashback deal at wirefly is still active

http://www.wirefly.com/learn/company_news/wirefly-bing-cashback-sale/

I have a live account, I search bing, and I see no cashback symbols.

NEON, WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?

Im still researching all this stuff. I was kinda digging google voice for free incoming and outgoing but I'd lose the caller ID capability, which is more or less huge I suppose. Unless there is a workaround for this that I haven't found yet.

you mean for incoming? bc i'm pretty certain i still see the # of who is actually calling when they call my google voice # and it forwards to my cell

[Edited on February 28, 2010 at 12:16 PM. Reason : but i'm on at&t, no idea if there's a difference]

It passes caller ID on incoming calls. Not sure if there's a way to get free incoming as it just displays the person's number on the bill. I've managed to get free outgoing by adding the google number it dials when I tell it to dial using google voice to my friends and family. The number it uses isn't your google voice number so if you just add your gv number to your account you won't get free outgoing. Suppose you could just add your google voice number to your friends and family, set your phone to send the voicemail to your gv number and let all calls go to voicemail and then just call them back. Then you'd technically have unlimited.

My research is still a work in progress

If I can see who is calling, fantastic. What if I call outbound, I guess they'll see my google voice number? Or will they see my cell number? Because people are in the habit of returning calls to the call ID.

I have no idea what you just said

From what I'm reading, you can program it to pipe through your GV number, but then every number calling you is that number, so you lose the call ID, which was my original problem.

lol. When you dial a number through the google voice app, it doesn't dial your google voice number. It uses another number, so if you have your google voice number in your friends and family, you're not going to get free outgoing.

yes. my GV number prefix is 919-341 and the number it dials when I use the google voice app prefix is 919-429, then it forward through to the number I'm calling with the 341 number as the caller id.

a couple of questions:

what's the best must-have apps? I downloaded advanced task killer and love it so far...kills apps from running in the background and draining the battery.

also..noticed it only has flash lite, which doesn't work on many sites that have flash video.. is there a way around that or do i have to wait until flash 10.1 is available?

Well this should be interesting:

But seriously, this whole patent business is getting out of hand with technology companies.

^^reading the complaint it looks like apple is just being a bitch and is worried they're going to lose out by HTC and the Android phones becoming more and more prominent in the smartphone world, and they've patented some incredibly stupid things (limited the power to the processor to save battery? my fucking laptop does that too, apple gonna sue HP for it?)

ok, so i'm having issues with gchat between my phone and computer. with most folks, when they message me on gchat and i start chatting with them on the computer, the phone only vibrates for the first message and then after i start replying on the computer, it just alerts me on the computer with the sound and the flashing firefox tab or whatever. with my fiance only, the phone vibrates for every message she sends. it has only done this when talking to her. it's annoying as hell.

any ideas?

"AT&T ditches Google Search for Yahoo on the Motorola Backflip
Posted on Wednesday, Mar 3, 2010 by Jared DiPane

When you think of Android, you think Google -- powered by Google, Google Search Bar, Google Apps, Google Sync, etc.

But we also all know how AT&T likes to have exclusives, and, shall we say, "tweak" its devices. And they're at it again with the Motorola Backflip, which has given Yahoo search default function of this device. The search bar, home page and more are Yahoo instead of Google.

AT&T firmly believes Yahoo is the best search engine for this device (or at least Yahoo shelled out enough jing to get on board), and users don't have the option to switch to the Google powered one instead. If users wish to access Google search, they will have to do so through the browser."

yeah, AT&T and Apple are getting a little ridiculous.

NRR- I know people in the mePhone thread were talking about how it would stop sending messages to whichever one you're not replying from. So if she replies from her computer, she still continues getting messages on her phone and it works on both if you im someone else?

no. when i message other people, it stops sending the messages to whichever i'm not replying from after i start replying. when she messages me, it keeps giving the alerts on both of my devices. she does not have this problem when messaging me.
