^^Tube magazine...booooo

Get a 10/22 and trick it out with mall ninja accessories.

jk. A Marlin 60 is probably the cheapest decent quality 22 out there.
Not bad at all if you like tube fed guns.

[Edited on May 14, 2008 at 9:30 PM. Reason : BTW the Rem model 597 is only ~$130. They dont have many aftermarket parts though if that matters]

I still have yet to figure out if I can swap out the barrel on my USP9 for the SD barrel.

Hi Eddie

Why would you want an SD barrel?
You gonna get a can?

^^ I did a quick search and found a few threads on hkpro.com. Even if you don't find an answer I'm sure that you could ask the guys there and get better answers than TWW can give you.

Yeah, I've been reading HKPro's forum for a while now and have reached the conclusion that the Tactical barrel should work in my full size USP9. They're both full size USP9's, and I haven't seen anything in the documentation which indicates a substantial difference in assembly.

I'm certainly thinking about getting a suppressor. That's slightly further down the road, though.

It's gonna be $texas.

Factory HK barrels are probably at least $200, maybe more for the SD barrel.
Some barrel makers may make some that should be as good or better than factory (also with conventional rifling).
Check Nowlin, Kart, Jarvis, Bar-Sto, Cylinder&Slide, etc.

There's a good chance you'll have to do some minor fitting to any barrel, HK or not.
True drop in parts will be made with crappy tolerances to fit manufacturing variations.
The good thing is it'd probably be very minor, just a tiny bit of filing on the hood. That's a good thing too, very close barrel to slide fit = better accuracy.

Then you've gotta find a suppressor that matches the HK threads.
My guess is if you're willing to pay $600+ for a suppressor then the manufacturers can easily make the right threads...but I would have one suppressor model in mind before i ever bought the barrel and make sure it's compatible or else get one custom threaded.

I've had 2 Remmy 597's in the past. One of them I never fired, the other wouldn't ever fire 3 rounds in a row without jamming. Plus I hate loading those little 10-round detachable mags on both the 597. The former owner of one of them came and bought it back, and the one that malfed I traded on another Marlin 60 at a gun show

I have always preferred tube-fed rimfire guns because I grew up shooting them and the magazine is easily loaded or topped off. And it fascinates me that while the little M60 is one of the most inexpensive 22 rifles out there, it is also one of the best. I have Remmy 552s and 572s, a Browning BL22, two 10/22s, a POS Remmy 522 Viper, and probably close to a dozen others. But that one particular little M60 I have gets heated up as much as the others combined.

Yeah, Jarvis was the first place I looked when I started considering this. I'd still prefer to have a factory barrel, though. I'm just hardheaded like that.

Here's another great question for you. I'm looking for a very particular type of holster. I'd love to be able to find one which is behind-the-back, vertical handle (barrel parallel to the ground), right-hand draw. That in and of itself is not so hard. Finding one which can also accommodate the laser on mine is a bitch. I see tons and tons of paddles, but none which meet all of these criteria. I'm not looking for concealed carry for this (as my full size USP doesn't really do that so well) - I just want something which can be worn on the back.

I don't think you'll find one that will fit a laser.
You'd have to look at getting one custom made.
Custom kydex holster aren't that expensive.

Heck, kydex is cheap. Some kydex, dense foam, and a heat gun and you can make one.

No, that one definitely won't work with my gun.

This one is quite close to what I want, but it won't fit my gun.

OK, so where might I go about having a custom holster made? This is something I've never once thought about. Any place local?

I don't know of any local places.
If your laser isn't common, then you may end up having to ship the laser and/or the gun to the manufacturer.
They'll press the kydex right over your gun for the perfect fit.

My laser is not the H&K LAM. I'm very, very hesitant to send my gun off to someone just to have a holster made. I guess I'll keep using the one I have for now. Maybe next time the gun show is in town, I'll take a more thorough look and see if anyone's doing customs there. (Highly doubtful, though.)

A friend of mine ordered a pistol from PDHSC. It came in 3 days later. They kept telling him for 2 weeks that there was a supply issue and that it was backordered. The whole time, the pistol he had ordered was sitting in the case for sale.

That is some fucked up bullshit.

He found out that the gun he had held a couple hours beforehand (while browsing) was actually his. That is pretty shitty customer service. I'm surprised that he wasn't mad as hell. I would be. They didn't offer him any compensation for deceiving him and wasting his time.

I won't be ordering anything from them anytime soon. It makes me mad just thinking about it.

I know someone else here was mad about Jim from Jim's Guns doing the same thing. I feel ya.

for the one that wants a .22lr, if you dont mind not having a semi-auto, browning makes an excellent lever action - bl-22. Its a nice tack driver for a .22. 15 rd, tube fed

Marlin's lever version is also a great little gun

Both great guns, but neither is what I'd call cheap. Out of those two, my favorite is the Browning.

PSA: Davi's range is closed. I went yesterday for $7.50 Wednesdays and was told it will not be reopening.

Eagle1 is close by, so I stopped by there for the first time. I was highly impressed. The range is well lit and well ventilated but only 25 yds. If you've every shot at Davi's range you'll know how hard it was to see the targets, even at 15 yds. The staff was really friendly and there was none of the "I'm a tougher mall ninja than you" vibe that I've found at other local ranges. Plus it's only $9. So far so good.

Huh, you're right. I just called to double check and was told $13 or $250 for one year. I swear I saw the guy write down $9, maybe he cut us a deal because it was our first time and we had to pay for range cards? Total was $29 for two people with two targets so I ASSumed it was something like $5 for the cards. Oops, my mistake. I gotta learn to pay more attention. I guess it's still on par with other places and I liked the place so I'll probably go back.

Just came back from visiting my folks in FL. The outdoor range there was $5, wish it was like that here.

Where do you usually go? Any good deals out there at other places?

Davi's website

Quote :
"We regretfully announce the closing of our indoor range as of May 10,2008. Due to safety issues that arose during the past several months, we felt that it would be in the best interest of the public and this company to close the range portion of our business. Davi’s motto has always been ”Where Safety Always Comes First!” thus taking that statement to heart and closing the range was a monumental decision."

yeah the range cards cost extra for some reason. i like their range, it's well lit and the people don't bother you at all (unless you suck). there is one guy there, skinny with glasses, who is really nice and will shoot the shit all day.

Quote :

Yeah, it's nice not having to pay an arm/leg to practice. In addition to range fees, increasing ammo and fuel prices and lower $ value, things are not looking up.

I guess stockpiling was a good idea. Too bad you can't do that with gas.

Time to get a .22.

Quote :

there really isn't any place that's gonna be cheaper, unless you or a friend have some land where there aren't people living near.

It really does suck for a lot of people now that davi's range is closed. Their selection of guns for rent was quite nice. I rented a bunch of guns there to figure out what I wanted. Now I have no idea where I'll recommend friends go to try out a sig, glock, etc...

I've only heard of that guy having kaboom issues. If it's firing out of battery, that's not good, but it's more of a your word against mine issue.

That guy has posted it on many forums and seems to abandon them after criticism is raised.

He doesn't seem to think that it could in any way be his fault.

Reloading is awesome and a great way to save money, but there is a reason manuf. won't stand behind one where they have been used.

I've heard of a few people blowing up Ruger revolvers with bad reloads (double charges of fast powders).
In those few cases, the gun owners were upfront with Ruger about what happend and Ruger has replaced the guns.
That's not the norm though.

^ I know a few people buy Ruger revolvers just so they can push the pressure limits on hot loads, that's a big reason why companies won't be held liable for what happens to their firearms when they do go kaboom.

I don't know how that guy can claim he can see the difference in 1 grain wt. of powder in a small bottleneck case like that so well. Even in .357 cases, I just dump a few onto the scale to make sure the powder measure didn't float any as I was charging them.

Just to note: looks to me that the neck separated from the case and the rest of the case is intact. I would expect an out of battery firing to result in a split case or separated or ruptured case head instead of blowing the neck off.

I just have to rant for a second...My girlfriend went to a silent auction 4 weeks ago and bid and won a 1 Year Membership to the Davi's gun range. (For the past 3 years, I have gone to PDHSC, but I wanted to shoot my AK and my new AR). She spent $125 at the auction.

She just gave me the membership last week and I was so excited to get down there and put my first rounds through my AR, only to find out that the fucking range is now closed. I was a little pissed. After 15 minutes of talking to the manager, he tells me that they will not refund my membership because I didn't pay full price. He explains that since they donated it to the charity, the membership has "no value" and thefore I won't get a refund. What a fucking joke.

I am pissed. I will be writting a few letters to see if there is anything I can do. I am sure Davi's wrote that membership off as a charitable tax deduction...fucking cheap bastards.

I shoot at PDHSC every now and then, but even with gas high, its cheaper to drive out to nash county and shoot there for me. 10 and 25 yard pistol backstops, 125 yard rifle range. I would much rather pay for gas than pay a range fee.

^^ The manager is completely in the right. They donated it and it does not have a value, there is no reason the should GIVE you money for something that you did not directly buy from them. A tax right off of 100 dollars means nothing for a business that has over 3 million in sales annually. If you have a problem with anyone it should be the person who sold the pass to you, if anyone was responsible it would be them.

For what its worth, I cant stand Davi's and quit spending my money with them years ago
