it shorts me a substantial amount on my run. ie today, i ran 2 miles on the treadmill, it tracked .63.

so i tried to calibrate it, but it says that i don't have any valid runs to calibrate with because it won't track me the full amount of the run... does that make sense?

goto a highschool track or goto the derr track.

thats an easy way to calibrate. and remember what lane you're in and do your lap properly. you're gonna end up running a few laps to get it right. ditch the nike and get a gps watch w/HR strap. it'll make you enjoy your runs

^^ Got any recommendations for a cheap one that's good? I'm overly obsessed with balance and weight while running, so I never run with anything more than gel packets, but I'm starting to consider whether it's worth it to get used to wearing a watch so I can do a better job of pacing myself.

I've got a garmin 405. With the HR strap. It has a touch bezel that can be confusing at first. I would hit up a running store and try the watches on. The strap is pretty comfy. Weighs nothing. But garmin makes a few styles of watches. But they're not cheap. Sometimes you can find some deals online.

makes sense, but very annoying. i would try posting in the online forum. i complained about my runs not being posted to my account and they were fixed the next day. they have nike people monitoring the forums and helping out. not sure what else to suggest.

I've tried to calibrate my nike+ipod quite a few times as well, and I have my chip in a shoe pocket because I don't run in Nikes. I tried to calibrate it on a track and a long run, but I still get false numbers every time I run. I've kind of given up and I'm looking for something more accurate.

There are a lot more less expensive brands than garmin. But do some Internet searches on which are good.
Garmin has ant+ technology so you can sinc multiple things to it like the HR strap, cadence meters, pedometers and it'll sinc to a computer so you can track everything.

Ended up picking up an under armour hood/mask last night in anticipation for a race this morning, since it was in the 20s at race time. Ended up pulling the mask down around the mile mark, and then used it sparingly from then on... It was really tough to breath through, but it was tough to breath in the cold weather anyway. All in all I think the hood worked well, but it was a miserable morning to say the least.

9 miles today in an hour and 37 minutes. I'm happy with my half marathon progress so far.

Added bonus: no leg pain/stiffness after my run today. I don't know if it's from the gel I used today (different than last week) or my body is getting used to the longer runs.

^^^ 27:45, so for a 6k that's right around 7:20/mile So from last weekend I lost 30 sec/mile and only ran an extra kilometer (21:13 last weekend).

Oh well, I'm just using that as motivation for the last leg of the series which is an 8k in late Feb.

I ran 5 miles tonight in less than 42 minutes. This is about 15 minutes faster than the first time I ran that far in 2009.

exactly.

So I'm thinking about getting a dog, for one reason being a possible running companion. Anyone know some of the best breeds? I love a black lab, always had one growing up. I've done some reading that a dog needs to be probably about a year or so before getting them into running w/me.

I've been looking a little on CL for such an animal but any input is welcome. I know some of my 12ish mile runs at Umstead might be a little safer if I get out where nobody else is- i expect the dog could be Lassie enough to get help perhaps. Or at least I may have the dog carry some weight (water and rations for the two of us)

and of course the awwwww look at the dog from girls doesn't hurt either

I have a 2 year old black lab that I used to take running with me. He's great because he can definitely keep up but as soon as he sees another dog he beelines and is all "hey hey hey!!!"

Have you looked into German shepards? I had one growing up that was awesome. Very easy to train and didn't seem to care too much about other dogs.

Oh yeah, I have a 12 mile run today. Aiming for 2 hours based on progress of my other runs.

I've read Shepards are good, but I am all about labs, unless otherwise I'll probably get one of them. My roomate has an OLD chocolate lab right now, she's got too many problems to try to run (i've done it, max is like 1 mile then she gives me the 'fuck you dude i'm done' look)

I was planning to run a full marathon by myself today and had laid out a two-lap course so I could stop at my apartment and refuel at the halfway point. Buuut my Achilles tendon had other plans, so I ended up limping the last few miles home on the first lap and couldn't set back out again. It's frustrating when the rest of me feels good and wants to keep going, but one little tendon can put the kibosh on the whole thing.

I ran a 10.3 mile loop at Umstead last weekend in 1:49:54 (clockwise)

and ran it again in the reverse direction on Saturday in 1:45:13 (counterclockwise)

I felt like I'd be much faster during, but I guess I can't be upset about progress either way

Signed up for the Marine Corps marathon. Apparently I got lucky by signing up for it on the first day because it sold out in like 28 hours.

8K this morning in 34:52.

Ran 2.5 miles on Saturday in my VFFs. Next day I was getting some serious arch pain to the point where I could only walk on the front of my foot.

I think I might have increased my mileage a little bit too quickly, maybe? Last couple times I ran it was 1.5 miles, 2 miles on a fairly soft indoor track and then Saturday I moved to a paved trail. I have no clue if my form was messed up (I usually avoid heel striking until I get really tired). Thoughts?

^^ Yeah I tried signing up Thursday night and it said it was already full! If you or someone you know gets hurt and has to drop out send me a PM and I'll pay the fee to transfer it to me.

On a positive note, I ran 15.6 miles on the ATT this weekend at a 7:57 pace and felt pretty good til the last ~1 mile!

^ that is good timing.

I always wondered what a respectable 1 KM time is for someone on a varsity high school team or something.

Not an elite time, but what most cross country people should be able to handle.

Does anyone know?

Labs are a good start. There is this one guy that I see from time to time that has a lab that can keep a 7:30 for like 7 miles or something.

Some dogs really perform well as running companions, and others don't. A lab is a safe bet, but I would ask around a bit more.

Dogs can lose a lot of skin and padding on the bottoms of their feet if they are too heavy for it. It is something that you have to monitor while you are running your dog.

I ran to catch the bus today in 0:14.

I mean it's a good number and I'm proud of it, but I really think I can improve. Maybe drink more water and eat more bananas.

(No but seriously, here in Budapest there is a little island in the middle of the Danube that has a 5K route on it that I was getting used to during the summer, but good LAWD the winter sucks for running. It'll be warmer again soon so I'll get back out there. Hurray for getting in shape!)

^^the high school state meet is usually won in 2:28-2:32 range. Usually anything under 2:40 is respectable in high school because that means you're going through 800m in under 2:10.

1k repeats are great, they are one of my staple workouts, I usually do 8x1000m with 60 secs rest and just try to keep them around 3:00 or faster (3:07 is roughly 5 min mile pace).

That's fast. I usually top out at 3:10 and have two warm ups at 3:40 or so. I will do about 5 to 6.

This gives me something to shoot for, thanks.

I ran my first marathon yesterday! And then I did not leave the house for the rest of the day. Even my shoulders are sore, surprisingly.

I was not very well prepared; a series of minor injuries had kept me from my scheduled training routine all during February. I did a century ride on my bike back on Feb 12, so I knew my cardio was fine for a long race, but I still probably ran less than 40 miles in the last month. At least now I know my knees can handle marathons, though.

I wore my Vibram KSO's for it and think I may need to go half a size up for long distances, because my toes and forefeet were really in a lot of pain the last five miles or so. I had to stop a few times to try and adjust the strap to loosen them up a bit. Or maybe I'll look into another minimal running shoe that doesn't have individual toe compartments, to give them a little more room to expand over the course of a long race. I can't imagine doing that as a last leg of an Ironman in the shoes I have now.

Ran for the first time last week since late October or early November. 3.25 miles at a 7:30 pace. Legs were sore for a day or so, but it got cold again, so I don't think I will go running again until it gets back in the upper 40s.

I've had what I think is knee tendonitis going on two months now, so no running for me. A brisk walk is about all I can do now.

In the beginning I had a constant sharp pain to the inner side of my leg, to the top side of my kneecap. It especially hurt when driving - where I had to keep my knee bent and pressing pedals the entire time. It then progressed to where it no longer hurt while bending, but walking downhill killed it.

Now it's to the point where I can walk normal, but running still isn't an option. If I run my knee will make popping noises and start to hurt if I try to keep running. The knee itself really doesn't pop, again, it's on inner side of my leg, toward the top of my kneecap. My knee has never gotten swollen, hopefully this will be gone by the time it starts getting warmer outside.

Actually this sounds closer to what happened:
http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/knee/medialmeniscus.htm

Still can't explain the lack of swelling though. Apparently applying rice helps (typo in link)

Same thing happend to me about 4 years ago.

I did a lot of stretching for about three weeks and then gradually started running again.

I had the exact same symptoms that you described. It has completely gone. For a while I just thought that it was some sort of growing pain or something, but never got an exact diagnoses.

It hurt like hell though.

^Glad to hear it heals after some time. After about 8 weeks I'm getting to the point where I can put jogging weight on the knee if I have it in a brace. Even then I have to stop after about two tenths of a mile.

It has gotten better with time. I suppose it will be back to normal in another month or so.

Hey

I am trying to run a few times a week now, and the following pattern is emerging as both excruciating and annoying:

Monday - run, feel great

Wednesday - run, struggle with shin pain near the end

Friday - shin pain starts in first 10 minutes, finish on bike

It's the front of the shin (shin splints?) and I would really love a way to keep it from happening, it ruins my basketball game.

yeah shin splints. I get em usually on the lower front of my shin and it is painfull to touch.

Stretching helps. Rolling the calves on a roll pin helps. But the best thing seems to be timing.

Whenever i get them they always go away in about 2-3 weeks.

Now that I've done my marathon, I decided I'm going to stay in marathon shape rather than switching gears totally back to cycling. One of my friends runs ultramarathons and is trying to convince me to sign up for one with her; she would do the 50-mile route and I would do the 50K. A 50K isn't that much more than a marathon so I'm considering it, but it's also a trail run rather than being paved like I'm used to.

I did buy a pair of the new New Balance Minimus Trail shoes though with the thought that they would be the ideal shoe for me to do it in; they're fairly similar to running in Vibrams but without individual toe compartments (that does make a substantial difference, of course, but similar otherwise).

Will do.

^Personally, I think trail running is much easier than road racing especially for longer runs because the terrain is much easier on your knees and what not.

Ran in the Shamrock 8K in Virginia Beach today (waited too late to sign up for the half marathon, which is tomorrow). I felt really good, but my time was a little slower than my last 8k because of fighting traffic for the first half mile or so.... It was partly my fault for starting off deep in "Coral 1"(there were a total of 6 corals) but there were quite a few people in "Coral 1" that had no business being up there. Quite a few of them were practically walking out of the gate
