i guess amazing is in the eye of the beholder.
3/24/2010 10:27:29 AM
I'm coming back to state at the end of april. I haven't been since mid-January. Hoping to be amazed ... thinking i'll just be mildly impressed.
3/24/2010 11:34:54 AM
I wouldn't calling it amazing, but it's better than the homeless back-alley hell hole it used to be.
3/24/2010 5:36:00 PM
3/24/2010 8:08:37 PM
Even with all the construction equipment and barriers still strewn all about, it's quite impressive how much it improves the look to no longer have overhead wires. Really big difference IMO.
3/25/2010 10:04:41 AM
i will take my camera in my bookbag tommorow and put up some pics.
3/25/2010 2:56:06 PM
I won't be impressed until I see some new store front action.that barber shop is in total disarray and ruins that entire section IMO.
3/25/2010 4:12:39 PM
Couldn't find too much online.Hillsborough and Morgan on 3/23
3/25/2010 4:21:01 PM
they paved one side of the road today and they're laying brick sidewalks from North Hall to Sadlacks
3/25/2010 5:44:02 PM
So whats going to happen to the shops to the right of Sadlacks? With the new wide sidewalks it looks impossible to park in their parking lot.
3/25/2010 7:04:21 PM
NC State purchased all that land now, so you're gonna see potential development there. Not soon, of course, but in the next 5-10 years. They now own the commercial peninsula between Enterprise and Maiden.
3/25/2010 7:29:49 PM
^yep
3/25/2010 7:45:23 PM
I saw that, I just thought it was a semi-dick move to block off parking while they're still in business.
3/25/2010 7:57:04 PM
I just hope that some new businesses move in once the construction is done. Some of the shit on Hillsborough Street amazes me that it makes any money to stay there.
3/25/2010 8:13:32 PM
Some of the blocks on the street just need to be downright torn down and rebuild so they front the sidewalk directly. Make it more of an urban corridor and when they rebuild try and add some unique character to the structures. There's too many gaps along the street where it goes from direct frontage to offset to random parking lot. Then there's that whole North Hall thing which breaks everything up.Build a small parking deck on the corner next to Locopops w/ retail on the first floor facing Hillsborough.[Edited on March 25, 2010 at 8:19 PM. ^^ I've often wonder that as well. One building I wish they'd get rid of/would burn down/get sucked up in a tornado is the Electric Company Mall. It's that building on the corner across from Wachovia that has the comic book store and Amore's Pizza in it. You wouldn't know it from the outside, but there's a crapload of indoor store units in there that aren't used because the building is an absolute shit hole. I don't even know how it passes inspection. It was obviously built in the 70s when people were okay with stuff looking sketch as hell.If it were torn down they could get some nice retail space on the bottom and some offices/studio apartments above.
3/25/2010 8:50:03 PM
I don't know. I had an old neighbor on Bagwell that told me that "the jews" owned that building.
3/25/2010 9:37:53 PM
The Electric Company building was purchased with the intent of renovating it, but I can't remember how long ago that was and I have no idea if anything will actually come of it.
3/25/2010 9:40:46 PM
It's older than the 70's. At one point there was actually electrical equipment there from what I've heard, hence the name. I believe the building dates from the 50's maybe? ArcBoyeee might know. Though it has been shops for a while, plus there used to be a bar, a nightclub, and a movie theater in there.[Edited on March 25, 2010 at 11:32 PM. Reason : ]]
3/25/2010 11:31:54 PM
^ wake.gov says it was built in 1940.Sold in October 2008 for $3,188,000.
3/25/2010 11:52:01 PM
So the area where jackpot and IHOP exist has been purchased by a charlotte real estate group that plans to add townhomes on ashe, dress up that street side, and place living and retail spaces on the morgan curve. things are really going to open up, it seems.
4/7/2010 9:34:56 PM
are they making Morgan 2 way at that roundabout?
4/7/2010 9:39:44 PM
Yes
4/7/2010 9:51:22 PM
I came here to ask the same thing.
4/7/2010 11:04:43 PM
4/8/2010 5:23:53 AM
that, plus the Wings-to-Go and Barber Shop sectionslap some paint on that bitch
4/8/2010 8:58:20 AM
i've been impressed by how quickly the whole thing has gone from "mess of construction" to "starting to look good".when they first started i wasn't all that optimistic that anything speedy was going to happen, but they have changed my opinion.
4/8/2010 10:03:44 AM
my favorite part is the only one lane of traffic in each direction + the median. makes it much easier to cross the street.
4/8/2010 10:16:41 AM
hopefully that will also discourage people from using hillsborough street to get through raleigh.
4/8/2010 10:48:26 AM
^That's the idea. Destination, not transport corridor. That's what Western/MLK and Wade are for.
4/8/2010 11:45:02 AM
^^^^^^
4/8/2010 11:53:59 AM
it's still a clusterfuck and that's all you need to know
4/8/2010 12:08:28 PM
they put the forms out to pour the concrete for the median today(this thread is a 4 1/2 year liveblog)
4/8/2010 4:36:57 PM
i can't wait to do Hillsborough Hike on the newly revitalized Hillsborough St.3 weeks
4/8/2010 4:38:59 PM
I love that when I head west on Hillsborough and see that traffic is backed up before the Pullen roundabout I can hang a right on Oberlin, hit the roundabout, cut up Pullen, and then get back on Hillsborough in front of the traffic.
4/8/2010 4:41:25 PM
updates for the out-of-towners:new, widened brick sidewalks are completed from Sadlacks up to Sir Speedythe eastbound lane is pavedornamental trees being planted on Mitch's sidemedian competed between the two lanesall the street lights, sidewalk lamps and stoplights are installedcool little fence installed on the Scooterz side of the roundabout to protect the pedestrians from Asian drivers

Picture please - I always like seeing this thread bumped and I always hope there are some updated pictures. I can't wait to get back to Raleigh soon and see the progress.
4/21/2010 1:39:38 PM
100% walkable
4/21/2010 1:40:04 PM
I'll try and get some pictures later. It should also be noted that the street lamps are LED now.
4/21/2010 3:35:41 PM
I was riding my bike to Lincoln Theatre on Saturday night, and my road bike got caught up in some grooves just past the Velvet Cloak, causing me to bail. I managed to not hurt myself, but when I went to pick my bike up off the ground, I noticed a hissing sound. My tire was fucked. I'm surprised it took this long for the poor condition of Hillsborough St. to claim one of my tires.
4/21/2010 3:52:44 PM
use the sidewalks
4/21/2010 4:01:25 PM
sidewalks aren't in great shape either
4/21/2010 4:04:49 PM
^^ That's illegal.
4/21/2010 7:30:49 PM
maybe i've been an out-of-towner for too long, but wtf is a scooterz?
4/22/2010 8:03:47 AM
^ a place that sells scooters (not like "the scooter store" ads on tv...they sell kymco and sym and such)http://www.scooterzinc.com/tripleD4u used to be the mechanic there, before moved a thousand miles away [Edited on April 22, 2010 at 8:09 AM. Reason : link]

I'm sure this has been asked, but what are the rules about parking on those new spots put in on the university side of hillsborough st.?
4/28/2010 9:39:05 AM
i've noticed a lot of people ignore the red lights in the construction area after work is done for the dayi guess they assume someone is directing traffic? i almost got killed by a maniac red light runner
