Nacho:ownership of an iPhone is a requirement to participate? jesus christ, i've been out of Tech Talk for a few days, come back to read up on a few things and comment a bit, and you want to take me to the woodshed for commenting? i'm sorry if you don't like that i'm choosing to participate, and disagree with your view, but i have as much right to post my views here as you do. that includes if you don't like or agree with them. i didn't seek to pick a fight with anyone, but you're doing a bang-up job of turning it into one. chill out.[Edited on July 17, 2010 at 12:12 AM. Reason : not directed at Bill, he's cool.]

Participate? You've done nothing but stirred up shit for the sake of shit stirring. Feel free to contribute some actual content to the thread. Otherwise...yeah. Your mouth: shut it.]
7/17/2010 12:22:31 AM
Why do you want to pick a fight? My original comment was every bit as valid and "actual content"-y as your "Jobs doesn't answer questions he doesn't like" comment.

so back to actual iphone conversation... will a software update be able to fix the proximity issue? or is it a hardware fix?
7/17/2010 2:01:52 AM
Proximity issue is supposedly a software fix coming in the next update according to Jobs in the press conference today but who knows for a while there they were claiming the antenna problem was too

i agree with el nacho on this one. optimum, you came in here and picked the fight first. that's obvious, just go back and reread that string of posts.

^ thank you for that post. Optimum needs a reality check sometimes.
7/17/2010 12:33:06 PM
yeah and i've called out Optimum for being a jerk tooMY point, is that it's laughable for YOU to call somebody else out for stirring the pot when for every thanks you might have received, there's another 10 times where you were argumentative, derailed a thread, or acted like an asshole to somebody
7/17/2010 12:59:57 PM
Your 10:1 ratio is a joke. There's no way it's more than 50:50 at a worst case scenario. And if you remove gloveco from the situation (which thankfully we have now) it's easily 1:10 in favor of helpful and/or informative posts. We've gone over this in the past, and for some reason you've just got it set in your head that I'm some massive asshole that's only here to stir up shit, but the simple fact of the matter is that I play nice way more often than not. And the times that I don't, I'm still doing it out of some (probably misguided, I'll admit) attempt to actually get the thread back on track/remove the riff raff/whatever. I long ago gave up on trying to please you because no matter how many times I post something helpful, you'll still pick out the times like this to harp on. Thankfully I'm able live my life without your approval.]

7/18/2010 11:00:10 AM
It not overly surprising. Apple at this point has decide not to "fix" the issue and instead to work around it.That said, aren't they supposed to have some big event in September (that everyone thinks will mark the iPhone on Verizon)? It'd be interesting to see if an "iPhone 4-2" gets made to take the place of the current iPhone.
7/18/2010 12:06:00 PM
I've been waiting for this mess to get sorted out before I upgrade, guess I'll see what september brings.
7/18/2010 2:36:04 PM
^I thought September was just some rumor created by an analyst? It seems pretty certain that AT&T has exclusivity for 5 years, which means no Verizon iPhone until iPhone 6 (which is also when LTE will probably be firmly established).
7/18/2010 5:44:02 PM
Aside from the supply issues, I've been kinda wondering if more people are preferring the bumpers to the traditional back-enclosing cases for the iPhone 4. Is the back glass fine without a cover?
7/18/2010 5:50:53 PM
it doesnt seem like the average iphone buyer would give two shits about what consumer reports says. i don't think i've ever consulted with their magazine/guide/website/whatever before buying anything.also, steve jobs is a huge tool.
7/18/2010 8:26:57 PM
^You're assuming that the average iPhone buyer is the type of person that would post in the tech talk section of a message board. I think the average iPhone buyer is exactly the type of person that would consult consumer reports before making a purchase, in other words the type of person that has just enough interest in technology to want an iPhone but not enough technical knowledge to make an informed decision for themselves. Also, Steve Jobs is a huge tool.
7/18/2010 9:03:34 PM
I'd think that the person paying close attention to the Consumer Reports recommendation is the one that's on the fence about buying one, and wants some non-marketing, non-techno-nerd analysis. You're both right, some people are going to buy a new iPhone and don't give a shit about CR, and others are going to use it as as a guide to buy/not-buy. But while most people are only going to take notice of a negative CR report on a hot gadget, few are going to base their buying decision on it. If people were THAT influenced by CR recommendations, Apple would be the #1 laptop seller, since CR consistently rates them #1 for portable computers.

hopefully that means they'll start shipping a model with a coated antenna.

I was at the mall today, and the Apple store was BY FAR the busiest store in the mall. It was pretty mind boggling. It's amusing that Circuit City/Best Buy/CompUSA for years just ignored Apple, then Apple makes their own store and people flock to it.And i finally got to see an iPhone 4 in person, and it was very nice. Seemed very well built, and the display models didn't have a single scratch on them.

The Apple Store is always packed because it's always impossible to find someone to actually buy something from and the Genius Bar is always packed.
7/19/2010 8:31:32 AM
^i don't particulary like going into the Apple store but the minute i'm in there i'm asked if I need any help or what i'm looking for. They are all very persistant about getting you to what you want/and or getting you to buy something. I don't know what store you guys are talking about but that's not the case in my experience. [Edited on July 19, 2010 at 8:55 AM. Reason : s]
7/19/2010 8:55:07 AM
Oh no, I agree. They're very excited to talk to you. Very excited to get you to buy something. It's just impossible to find the person who can actually check you out despite the "oh, anyone in the store can check you out" thing they tell you.I watched this happen to atleast 3 people while at the Genius Bar for my iPhone in Crabtree, and then don't even get me started on the clusterfuck that occurred when SandSanta tried to buy a replacement iPhone out of contract in Birmingham. I've never seen so many people who just refused to let the man spend $500.

I can help you with that. Just let me get so and so."SONOFABITCHIWILLSTABSOMEONEINTHEEYE

could you use something like those zagg shields?
7/19/2010 1:49:53 PM
People are working around the issue by using as little as a piece of scotch tape, so as long as the InvisibleShield isn't conductive, I'd imagine it'd be fine.
7/19/2010 2:10:23 PM
they could also make the bottom metal portion not part of the antenna at all.
