My phone lasts for almost two days with medium usage (push e-mail/calendar, intermittent games/ internet browsing).

mail on iOS4 is a piece of fucking shitIt doesnt update my inbox with messages read on another machine/website.If it finds a new message, it says Inbox(1) but it takes a fucking power cycle to get it to actually show the message
7/12/2010 1:26:57 PM
^^^Or, do what I did and just sell it as "new," if you still have the box and all the accessories. Granted, it was before iPhone 4 came out, but I got $425.
7/12/2010 1:29:52 PM
^^ try deleting your mail account and re-adding it. I was having similar issues and that seems to have fixed it for me.

so are the new iphones just worse on battery life than the older ones?I have the original one, and I charge it about every 3 days. Granted I don't talk much, but i do a fair amount of texting, and it's my web browsing device when i'm on the couch and my kid is watching cartoons.

Consumer Reports rescinds it's recommendation to buy the iPhone 4 after conducting further studies on the antenna issue. And they aren't shy with their words. http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/07/apple-iphone-4-antenna-issue-iphone4-problems-dropped-calls-lab-test-confirmed-problem-issues-signal-strength-att-network-gsm.html

It seems to vary by phone. I'd say I get slightly less battery life on my 4 than I did with my 3GS, but that's only the general feeling I get when using it, and not any sort of testing I've done. After using it for 3 years you start to get a feeling for what is normal and that you'll use x% of battery before lunch time and surfing for 20 minutes reduces it for x%, etc. I just don't feel like the 4 is any better than previous models, and on some days it feels a little worse. But 3 days usage between charges on ANY generation iPhone seems to be incredible even with minimal usage. Especially on a 3 year old battery. I'm certainly not calling anyone a liar, but that's not something I would expect at all. If those are your expectations, I wouldn't get your hopes up for the 4 to exceed or even meet that.]

really apple? lefties can't use your new phone without losing signal? way to go, fellas. how about you spend a little less on advertising and a little more on design

iPhone 4 = purchasedthe Best buy at southpoint has a ton of 32GB ones if anyone's still waiting.
7/13/2010 2:27:08 PM
I didn't realize that people were still waiting for these until I talked to someone about mine yesterday. I ordered mine on a Thursday from ATT, it was in my mailbox Tuesday. And this was over the 4th.[Edited on July 13, 2010 at 2:34 PM. Reason : might be because I got the 32GB. nvm]

7/13/2010 3:16:16 PM
^I'm not convinced they will. I think if the software update will fix this, that'll be the end. I can replicate the issue when I try but it has never happened by accident.
7/13/2010 3:42:29 PM
There's no way it's a software problem. Too many people that know what they're talking about have proved otherwise. They may try to sweep this under the rug or keep pretending that it's not an issue and hope that people forget by the time they release another product, but they really should do whatever it takes to make this right ASAP (which IMO, could only be a recall and replacement of all hardware). Then again, so far they've been doing a halfway decent job of just pretending the problem doesn't exist, so maybe they plan on sticking with that strategy.]
7/13/2010 3:50:23 PM
The only reason I have not bought one yet is simply waiting to see what happens with all this stuff.
7/13/2010 3:54:01 PM
It would be much cheaper for Apple to offer the "bumper" case as a free accessory instead of doing a mass recall. i predict they will probably choose this route while refuting the tests.
7/13/2010 3:55:09 PM
I imagine they should do a recall but I could care less. I have a case on it which eliminates the issue and its reception is better than the 3gs. Even without a case I could replicate the issue but never did it on purpose. I ordered one of these:http://www.ivyskin.com/iphone-4-case/iphone-4-reception-case.htmlI like the metal/back too much to cover it up with a opaque case.
7/13/2010 3:57:50 PM
They'll probably continue doing the exact same thing they've been doing: nothing.
7/13/2010 4:03:04 PM
^how is that case? I was thinking about getting that one. Also, it appears the jailbreak for iphone4 should be out quite soon.
7/13/2010 4:05:11 PM
^I have a dark blue one from bestbuy right now. I like it but this one caught my eye as being thin and hardly noticible so I ordered it. Don't think it shipped yet as they just started shipping them yesterday. I'll post when I get it.
7/13/2010 4:11:13 PM
I have this one:http://www.myincipio.com/product/IPHONE_4_IPH-512/iPhone-4-cases---Matte-Black-Ultra-Light-feather%C3%82-Slim-Form-Fitted-Case-for-iPhone-4.htmlits nice, but leaves the front glass pretty exposed if I were to drop it, get real unlucky, and have it fall flat on the front.
7/13/2010 4:21:33 PM
I don't care about the signal issue. I want my iPhone to instinctively know whom I intend to text and not who I am actually texting. So that "I want some after-work sex when I get home" goes to "Girlfriend" instead of "Joe".
7/13/2010 7:06:52 PM
The recall may have already started.http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=10575
7/13/2010 7:12:28 PM
^now that's interesting. that phone definitely looks a lot different than mine. i can't see the proximity sensor in mine, and it looks like the bezel is a bit more beveled in that one.i wonder if it's worth going up to crabtree yet...hah, we'll see, i snagged the last reservation for today at 8:10.]
7/13/2010 7:22:17 PM
"snagging" is what they call it now eh?
7/13/2010 8:19:05 PM
^^That looks no different from mine that I got a day before launch day. I can see my proximity sensor and I bet you can too if you put the phone under a bright enough light and hold it at the right angle, that picture was probably taken with a flash. Also, I remember reading an article written by an antenna engineer about the iPhone 4 talking about how any change to the antenna design would require going through the FCC testing process again. I highly doubt they've redesigned the antenna, resubmitted it to the FCC, and are already rolling out an updated model.[Edited on July 13, 2010 at 8:45 PM. Reason : ]

The fix is most likely temporary, as I had to do it again last night for the third time since I got my iPhone4. Hopefully it's something they can permanently fix in a future update.[Edited on July 14, 2010 at 9:15 AM. Reason : It happens to celebrities too! http://twitpic.com/24t8x7]

I don't know that they'll recall it. Jobs has gotten even more cocky (if that's possible) since the original iPhone launch. The average Joes buying it are doing it because they think it's a status symbol (they apparently haven't heard of Vertu) and probably don't care if it makes calls; and the Apple fanboys will make any excuse for it they can. That just leaves the people who are tech-savvy and only like Apple for the iPhone (I was formerly in this camp), and Apple doesn't care too much about them anyway. In other news, if you know anyone that wants to buy the iPhone 4, I'll pay people $100 to take over my 2-line contract. They'd be eligible for new customer pricing on both lines.[Edited on July 14, 2010 at 11:12 AM. Reason : shameless plug ;]

electrical tape? solve "the issue"? do tell...
7/14/2010 12:55:33 PM
Icolorwrap.com. Doesn't appear to have helped the signal any at all that I can tell. When I started typing this I grabbed the phone with my left hand to type with my right and immediately went to no signal. :-/
7/14/2010 1:05:58 PM
FWIW, I got a (black) bumper and it took care of the antenna issue for me. The bumper itself is really nice, but I'm not convinced it'll save me in case of a drop (the main reason I bought it). What's bugging me more is the proximity sensor issue. My phone turns on at random while I'm talking on it and I end up hanging up/facetiming/muting/adding parties to my calls. Very annoying, and well documented at this point. It's just frustrating how there's been no response to these major issues.

FYI: anybody interested in jailbreaking/unlocking your iPhone4 should visit http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/ and download and run tiny umbrella and get your ecid on file. Even if you're not sure, or don't think you will ever want to jailbreak, it's still not a bad idea just in case you ever change your mind (or want to ever be able to downgrade to 4.0 at some point in the future when Apple tells you you can't) It doesn't alter anything on your phone all it does is put your device id on record so that you'll always be able to go to/stay at 4.0. This may or may not be important if you ever want to jailbreak and/or unlock in the future.
