What do you guys use to set individual notification sounds (one for email, one for text, one for missed called, all being different sounds)? I am using 4.0.4.

I'm not sure about the call sounds, but for texts and different email accounts go under each individual application. Go under the settings for messages and find the notification sound and then go into each email account settings and set them there. The default sound under the main phone settings will be used unless you change them for each app.. I think.

Using Verizon abroad? Ha. PIck up a cheapo pre-paid GSM phone at Walmart, throw away the SIM card, buy SIM card in your location, and you're set. If you need to make international calls, then find free wifi, pull out your laptop, and use Google Voice.

Initial observations:

This Project Butter thing is awesome. UI feels way responsive, and all kinds of faster/smoother. They've added in a bunch of eye candy animations and fades. Normally that bothers me but it hasn't so far. Regardless of the features added in 4.1, I think this is the update I'll appreciate the most. Not that ICS is slow, but it's just so much smoother now than it was pre-4.1.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the new camera/filmstrip functionality. Reviewing through a filmstrip vs a thumbnail gallery is really sweet. Swiping to delete pictures is awesome. The pinch pull functionality is cool, as is being able to swipe out of taking a picture into your filmstrip. I feel like this kind of simple but useful functionality is what Apple does so well, so it's nice to see a similar UI experience on Android.

Voice search is better. When it can't quite tell what you're asking, it's best guesses seem more accurate, and the resulting screen with actions for those suggestions is better than it was before. I've tried the question/spoken answer stuff and so far it seems pretty useful. If they'd just make a native 1 X 1 Voice Search widget for voice search i'd be happy (I know there's an app, but it's slower). It's annoying to have to do go the top of the phone/tablet every time I wanna voice search.

I turned on Google Now so we'll see how that goes. Helping with traffic during the commute (making it so I don't have to look it up every time) would be a nice start.

The notifications improvements are cool. They've reformatted the whole thing to show more information and added in direct actions to the notification panel.

Native email app (tied to my Yahoo account) is way faster. Before it was a true pain in the ass to use due to slow performance, but now it's as snappy as the OS.


^^^Finally popped up via auto this morning (tried manual all weekend with no love). It's being phased in, so I bet you'll get it in the next few days.

Just installed CM10 (4.1) on my Epic 4G from the nightly builds and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with how snappy this 2+ year old hardware still is. I had previously been running CM9 which was a nice upgrade from Froyo, but had some strange lagginess when lauching/closing app, etc. However, CM10 seems to have resolved this with the addition of Project Butter. Not finding any glaring show stoppers in making this nightly a daily driver - all the usual culprits like WiMax and Bluetooth are working like a charm.

I can't imagine how incredible a GS3 is on CM10...

does ICS have some sort of hotkeys or keyboard shortcuts settings? my wife was using her tablet (running ICS) with a wireless keyboard and she says she doesn't know what she hit, but all of a sudden certain keys would open apps

i poked around for 15 minutes before i had to leave for work, but i couldn't find anything...it happens regardless of where she is or what she's doing (so if she's typing an email and hits a certain key, it opens gmail or something)

^^To help bolster his sale, I am using a Nexus S 4G with Cyanogenmod 10 (9/23 nightly) and it's absolutely flawless. I love JB so much. In terms of speed, it is a fraction of a second less snappy than a dual-core phone. Which is saying a lot, because with ICS it used to take 5-10 seconds to load a new app. Now it's less than 2 seconds when heavily loaded. That and the little interface tweaks to JB are just butter (pun intended).

I don't mind Touchwiz. I'm just waiting on the official 4.1.1 update. Once I check that out I may switch over to CM10. I'm new to Android but from what I've seen there aren't huge differences between Touchwiz and vanilla ICS. Just some small interface differences. Am I missing something?

i guess it's all in what you're used to.. I switched from the nexus s with plain ICS to the GS3 with samsung and verizon apps forced onto it

I don't like having to update apps that I don't use and am unable to remove, and the interface seems more cartoony and less streamlined (if that makes sense)

How is this different than any of the iOS software updates for vulnerabilities? They seem to happen just as often if not more. I remember when you could walk into an Apple store and jailbreak every iPhone in the store and put whatever you wanted on it.

It was partially patched on the s3. It potentially affects 73 other devices. Good thing the OS isn't fragmented and individual patches won't have to be released for all 73 devices.

No still have an iPad and iPhone. Just wanted to diversify. I don't see how anyone can make an argument for one or the other unless they actively use both. How many Android devices are you currently using? Truthfully I just got tired of having to jailbreak my iOS devices to get features that Android has had for years. After using an S3 for a few weeks I feel crippled when I use my iPhone and iPad.

What are the other 2? Nexus 7 and S3 here. I enjoy them but miss the battery life I get on my iOS devices. If I had a phone with the battery life of an iPhone and the features of Android I'd be happy. Stupid LTE radio takes up all the standby time on my S3. I can put it in airplane mode and it won't drain the battery overnight but if the radio's on the battery drains no matter what I do. I don't understand how Samsung advertises 500-900 hour stand by times for 2g, 3g, and 4g technology when I can barely get 24 hours standby on 4g.

It's amazing how horrific the Android ecosystem is right now.

I'm down to one Android device (Nexus 7) from 5, and as soon as a comparable non-android 7" hits, I'll be moving away from it. I love the Nexus 7, but I would love a 7" iPad even more.

And if someone manages to put together a 7" Win8 tablet on the new Intel platform (aka nonRT with 8+ hrs of battery life) maybe I'd even go in that direction.

Dunno about the S3, but battery life on my HOX running a CM10 based JellyBean ROM isn't any worse than stock.

I was really apprehensive about flashing custom ROMs on my phone, but it's not really a big deal. You can download the damn things directly to the phone, reboot into recovery, and flash a new ROM in matter of minutes/seconds. It's helluva a lot faster than upgrading iOS on my old phone was.
