Anyone know if the Gander Mountain store in Morrisville is open yet? Never been to one. I got a sales circular from them in this weeks paper so I'm thinking it might be open now.

Finally starting on an AR "build". Have a BCM upper. Stock. Lower receiver kit. Hand guard. Just need to get a stripped lower now. Looking for an aluminum one <$90-100 locally. Lots of cheap prices online but with FFL fee it's about the same (and most are out of stock). Guy threw in a knockoff eotech and 2 -3 other accessories.

I think so. Just contact the instructor before hand and make sure he's fine with it.

edit: just to be clear, you receive a paper stating you took and passed the course, which is one part of getting your cch permit.

^^we also need to know how much of each you plan to shoot. rounds per month or week or year.

i can already tell you, you're gonna want a good solid single stage to load the .338. start with that and then if you see a need for a progressive for your pistol ammo you can add one later. that's what i did.

Should I add a compensator to the front of my Keltec Sub2k? It'll add weight the end of the barrel, helping reduce muzzle rise, which is probably 2" when I shot it this past week. But will 1.75oz make that much of a difference? It seems like fool's gold and I'm skeptical, but alas I thought I'd ask you folks for your opinions. I'm replacing the front sight and I have the option to include a compensator for $11.

Sub2k is .40S&W. Rounds are equivalent to Speer Gold Dots 165gr HP.

Thoughts?

I've not shot one, but my first thought would be "why does a carbine need a compensator if it's just firing a pistol round?"

Just my two cents...

Seems to me that is a gun that just begs to be left bone stock.

My exact thoughts exactly. Well the front sight is off (as I thought it would be as it's on the front receiver, crooked ) and it's not easily adjustable. There's one from Red Lion for ~$70 that has really good reviews, is all metal, and easy to adjust

Compensators don't work due to their weight, they work by redirecting gas opposite of the muzzle rise. I've never seen the one you're talking about, but for $11 I'd try it. It couldn't hurt and if you don't like it you can take it off.

This is the sight/comp i'm looking at. It's one piece, so it's not like I can just "drop the comp" if I don't like it and keep the sight. For $11 price difference with vs without, it can't hurt. I'll give it a shot.

How is that a comp? I don't see the ports??

And you have 2" of muzzle rise from a .40 carbine? I don't even think I have that much from my 1911.

The compensator will probably help a little bit. It probably won't eliminate muzzle rise because the pressure of a 40s&w is probably low by the time it gets to the end of a 16" barrel. I don't think it's worth getting for practical purposes unless you want to shave fractions of seconds off of your shot times. If you think it looks cool then that's all the justification you need. I personally wouldn't put one on a sub 2000 simply because it'd stick out when the gun is folded. If you do get the comp and don't like it it's a simple hack saw and file job to turn it into the comp-less version.

go to the sheriff's office in the county where you live and apply for a handgun purchase permit.

[Edited on October 1, 2012 at 2:39 PM. Reason : or take a CHP class and then take the certificate to the sheriff's office]

Quote :
"Q: I want to buy a handgun from a friend. Do I need to get any sort of permit to buy it?

A: Yes. All handgun transfers in North Carolina, whether through a dealer or via private sale, or presented as a gift, require that the intended recipient of the handgun obtain a Pistol Purchase Permit from his/her local Sheriff. You must go to your Sheriff, apply for a Pistol Purchase Permit (one per handgun you wish to purchase), and pay a $5 fee. When you take possession of the handgun you must present the Permit to the seller, who is required to retain it forever. If a Pistol Purchase Permit is not presented, both the buyer and the seller can be convicted of a Class I Misdemeanor.

As of 8/10/04 a new law was enacted, which permits someone with a valid North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit to purchase a pistol without the need to obtain a Pistol Purchase Permit.

Q: You said that I have to get a Pistol Purchase Permit to receive a handgun as a gift. My father wants to give me a handgun for my 21st birthday. Do I really have to get a permit for a birthday gift?

A: Yes. NC law makes no distinction between purchases or gifts, and makes no distinction between strangers or relatives when it comes to transfer of a handgun. You must go through the legal process in order to obtain a handgun in North Carolina. There are no exceptions, except for Concealed Handgun Permit holders.

Q: What is the deal with this Pistol Purchase Permit law? I moved from one NC county to another and found that the Sheriffs of each county have vastly different requirements for getting Permits. Isn't this covered by State law?

A: The Pistol Purchase Permit law was passed in 1919, and is a classic piece of Jim Crow-era legislation (Jim Crow History). The recognition of civil rights for blacks and other minorities meant that the Constitution applied to minorities. This meant that blacks and other minorities could exercise their natural right to self-defense, with the full support of the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution and Article I, Sec. 30 of the North Carolina Constitution. This did not sit well with the Ku Klux Klan (which for many years was headquartered in Raleigh, just down the street from the Legislature) and other racist groups and influential individuals. The racist members of the State Legislature knew they could not overtly prevent minorities from purchasing handguns for protection, so the seemingly innocent Pistol Purchase Permit law was passed. This law allowed local Sheriffs and government officials to discriminate with impunity at the local level.

Even today, the Pistol Purchase Permit law is implemented in an arbitrary and capricious fashion by 100 individual County Sheriffs. Some Sheriffs do little more than collect the fees and hand out permits to the law-abiding, because more than that is not necessary. Others implement ridiculous, intrusive requirements that either discriminate on a wholesale basis or are selectively applied so that discrimination can be more personalized.

With the advent of the National Instant Check System (NICS) there is no public safety reason why the Pistol Purchase Permit system needs to continue. The Jim Crow era is over, and the laws of that era need to be eliminated. Most people agree with that in principle, but for some reason when it comes to guns a significant number of people seem to think that discrimination and arbitrary requirements are a good thing. This is something NCRPA totally disagrees with.

We have been trying for 10 years to get the Pistol Purchase Permit system completely eliminated. Apparently when it comes to gun control a lot of people think Jim Crow is still a good idea.

^^So until now you've illegally obtained weapons? Cool.

In all seriousness though, just go to your local Sheriff's office and get a pistol purchase permit. You'll fill out a little form and they will notify you when its been processed.

In rural NC this takes a couple days.

Then you go pick up the actual permit and pay them $5.

Then you take this with you to whatever gun shop and buy your handgun. They will take it away from you; you can't use a permit more than once.

^i've argued that limited gun control is necessary, I recognize that guns are designed to kill and kill people more efficiently than most other weapons (knives, bats, etc).

Stop whining man. I in no way have argued for more gun control for "you". Hell, I've never even argued for "more" gun control.

But just out of curiosity, some of yall think your guns make you "free" ("more armed, more free"). Aren't you afraid of the big-bad government declaring martial law, then coming and taking your guns you registered with the law?

Anyway, no need for cussing and name-calling tough guy, i asked a question and got an answer.
