I'm not giving up my mountain khakis The restof those brands I don't really care for anyways except my marlin 60 but that sucker is old and probably before they took control
9/16/2012 9:05:12 PM
^^because they buy up well-established brand names, bastardize the products via shitty QC and other cost-cutting measures, and then capitalize on the following the brand had before it went to shit.it's just plain sad what they did to Marlin.
9/16/2012 9:10:37 PM
^^^ Seems like we have this conversation every page
9/16/2012 9:22:44 PM
^^What happened to marlin? ^ Im outta touch.
9/16/2012 9:27:08 PM
i just like to warn everyone i can. the only product from them i can bring myself to recommend is the Marlin 795, simply because it's cheap enough that it's a good buy even with its QC issues.go handle and cycle some old Marlin leverguns and then try out a brand new one. you'll see.[Edited on September 16, 2012 at 9:31 PM. Damn I was looking at a Marlin lever gun. Any thoughts on a .44 MAG lever gun.
9/16/2012 10:21:22 PM
what do you wanna do with it? a 44 mag lever action is a great deer hunting rifle, but it's expensive to feed if all you wanna do is play with it at the range.
9/16/2012 10:26:57 PM
God new Marlin leverguns are a nightmare, especially the stainless ones.Remington 700s have been coming out of the factories for a couple years now with scope holes tapped NOT ON THE BORE CENTERLINE.H&R pretty much always made shit (IMO) but their break-action single shots were always OKAY. I'd be terrified to shoot one now in a larger caliber (like 45-70).I can't really comment intelligently on any of the other brands they've scooped up, but damn right it's a discussion that needs to be had on every page.Customer service is a big bag of shit now too. For most purposes (other than affordable 45-70s unfortunately) you can easily avoid these companies, so in my mind it's not a huge deal. Just good to be informed.
9/16/2012 10:35:41 PM
I bought my mom an '80s marlin 336 and her partner bought a new one around the same time (crazy coincidence)...the difference is night and day. The older one is a gorgeous, solid, flawless tack driver. The new one feels like a piece of shit and I don't even like shooting it. It does the trick but I would never buy a new marlin.
9/16/2012 10:46:37 PM
I would second the question "what do you wanna do with it" on the 44mag levergun. When I still had my revolver in that chambering and was considering reloading that caliber, I throughly researched the options. For my purposes the offerings from Uberti and Henry were best. I have a couple of Henrys already and can attest to the very high quality of the firearm.44mag in an 1873 replica (Uberti) is somewhat of an interesting topic. I love the function of the 1873 action, but the strength of the design in that caliber is questionable to me.That particular topic has been hashed out throughly on various messageboard, so ill let you have at that, but oddly ive never seen a review of that particular gun.I do know that the proofing process that Italians use in proofing their guns is much more demanding than what we do over here. The proofing ammo they use in testing the rifles is loaded to a ridiculous pressure.I don't think a company like Uberti would welcome such an obvious lawsuit anyway, so it's probably a stout weapon. Definitely research how an 1873 action works as compared to a later model (cartridge elevator / toggle link system). 44mag is easy to reload, although bullet diameter is actually around .430 and isn't the easiest to find. Still lots of choices. Very forgiving.

ooohhh ooohhh flame fest. whats the best 7.62x39 gun?? since we all know 300 blk sucks donkey balls.
9/17/2012 2:58:53 PM
the CZ 527 Carbine is the best 7.62x39 rifle
9/17/2012 3:51:49 PM
^Agreed, although magazines are small, scarce, and expensive. It's a great idea and I love the company. The trigger isn't nerfed by lawyers either. Mounting system is great too-The best semi-auto is any AK that doesn't fall apart in your hands. The coolest IMO is a (new) Mini-30, but it's picky about what it eats.
9/17/2012 4:08:13 PM
Hell, my AK rings steel at 150 yards all day long from an unsupported position. It wasn't even that expensive (cheaper than a Glock). It is a beater rifle that I would trust any time.
9/17/2012 5:14:33 PM
What type? AK prices are way too high right now for me. I wanted one a while back because I thought it would be a fun, inexpensive, commie gun but I think I will just stick with my sks that takes AK mags.
9/17/2012 6:10:15 PM
I played around with my Marlin .44mag lever gun today, and its a great gun. Reloads make it not terribly expensive and its still cheaper to shoot than .30-30 if you buy the ammo from Wal-Mart.Deadly accurate, but stout recoil.
9/17/2012 6:22:45 PM
i shot a buddy's Deerfield Carbine .44 magnum this past weekend. i was impressed. only problem is the low capacity, but it's a great hunting rifle. i still think i'd prefer a 44 levergun.
9/17/2012 6:31:13 PM
I just want a lever gun with one of the large looping levers so I can twirl the gun around to load the next round like John Wayne
9/17/2012 6:45:59 PM
I never understood why Ruger discontinued that model.I would have bought one new as a companion to my revolver.I wouldn't buy one of the rotary magazine bolt guns, model 77 I think.
9/17/2012 6:49:01 PM
yeah, you're talking about the 77/44
9/17/2012 6:56:24 PM
Ruger is auctioning a Deerfield, I think it's new, from 1973 on gunbroker right now. It's at like 1300-1400 dollars right now Supposedly from some factory collection.[Edited on September 17, 2012 at 7:47 PM. Reason : -]

does .260 rem reload well?
9/18/2012 10:26:38 AM
yes, it's just a necked-down .308 Win
9/18/2012 10:35:47 AM
ballistics look awesome on it but those mother fuckers are expensive.\.300 win mag is cheaper with similar ballistics[Edited on September 18, 2012 at 11:47 AM. Reason : .]
9/18/2012 11:47:32 AM
260 is much easier on your shoulder. for .260, unless you sight-in once a year and then hunt with it, ammo costs are gonna be too high to not reload.honestly, if you're not gonna reload, then just stick with .308. nothing else really makes sense.a basic reloading setup costs less than a good scope and takes up less space than a gun safe. roll your own![Edited on September 18, 2012 at 12:53 PM. 9/18/2012 12:52:58 PM
Just stick with a 308
9/18/2012 12:59:02 PM
that piece of gun isn't even relevant to a discussion of long range ballistic performance
9/18/2012 1:01:57 PM
No, but it's a 308 I'm looking at building - so close enough
9/18/2012 1:05:04 PM
I went the Trust route. It seemed to be the simplest and only way to do it in Wake County.I have a dealer in Durham. He has his Class 3 and it will transfer on Form 4.
9/18/2012 2:50:55 PM
who did you use to setup your trust?
9/18/2012 3:03:05 PM
Gregory Herman-Giddens, JD, LLM, TEP, CFPAttorney at LawChapel Hill, NC
9/18/2012 4:43:40 PM
Is this for class 3
9/18/2012 5:34:37 PM
Yep.
9/18/2012 6:10:11 PM
Even if you aren't going to reload, don't let that dissuade you from true long-range calibers, like .300 WM or .338 Lapua. Don't get sucked into the ".308 for economical long-range platforms" .308 is not a long-range cartridge. .308 is a battle rifle cartridge that was pushed into double duty because of NATO agreements. So if money is no object, go for something with better external and terminal ballistics than .308.
9/18/2012 7:38:12 PM
^^ if you don't mind me asking, how much did they charge to set up the trust?
9/18/2012 7:48:33 PM
I have a lapua in looking for something cheaper to put more rounds down range with.
9/18/2012 8:14:45 PM
Well, what range? Out to 600 shoot a .223. Out to 800 a .308. 1300 a .300 and I doubt you're shooting the lapua to its full potential.
9/18/2012 8:20:01 PM
how many places are there in the state for civilians to actually stretch the legs of a .338 lapua?
9/18/2012 8:22:25 PM
True. The old waffler. Anyway if I was you cats, I'd be looking at shooting up at Butner or the 37PSR 700m range.[Edited on September 18, 2012 at 8:38 PM. 9/18/2012 8:37:41 PM
i have used the lapua to 800 yrds but don't have/know of a place to do it herebut yes... a bolt .308 is fine.
9/18/2012 8:49:53 PM
Expect to pay between $400-600 depending on how much time you take. Mine was just at 600 but I did have some complicated things added. Their suggestion was to only have 2 people on the original trust. So, I had a trust then I also had them draft a possible amendment to the trust to add my brothers later on.600 or the trust2200 for the toys600 for the tax stamps400-600 for other pistons/adapters--------------------------@ $4000 total[Edited on September 18, 2012 at 10:27 PM.
