"Ok, this is just bullshit. We're headed towards our 4th straight bottom three finish, not to mention second last place finish in 4 years. We've been the worst team in the ACC since Lowe's tenure began. There isn't a media outlet in the country who would criticize us for firing the captain of that failboat."

Wrong. If we ran him off this year they would be coming out of the wood work talking about how great our incoming class was and how Lowe was finally starting to get his guys in and install his offense. Not to mention the fact that we lost a huge percentage of our offense last year and are very young. No young sir, we would be railroaded by the media once again. WRAL would lead the charge, have no doubt.

we're fucked either way

we are nc state

we keep lowe, we'll be shitty for 10 years

Fowler gives Lowe vote of confidence

BY J.P. GIGLIO - Staff writer
Tags: basketball | college | sports

N.C. State started the college basketball season with two goals - to play hard and show progress.

A 20-point home loss to Virginia Tech on Wednesday was a step back in both categories, but N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler and coach Sidney Lowe both feel the Wolfpack is on target for its preseason goals despite a five-game ACC losing streak and its position in last place of the conference standings.

"We're disappointed to be 2-8," Fowler said Friday. "We want to be 8-2, but we're encouraged by how this group is playing and the group of players we're adding next season."

Fowler, who hired Lowe in April 2006 after a lengthy search process, added that Lowe will be the Wolfpack's coach next season.

"He's our coach, and he deserves a chance," Fowler said. "He knows he has to turn it around and play at the top of the league."

Lowe hopes to get the Wolfpack (14-11, 2-8) out of the ACC basement and push North Carolina (13-11, 2-7) down, with today's game in Chapel Hill.

Lowe, 65-57 in his fourth season with the Pack, said Friday the ACC position wasn't totally unexpected after losing the top three scorers from the 2008-09 season and the top recruit to prep school, but he was mostly pleased with the team's improved effort.

"We knew it was going to be tough," Lowe said. "This is a tough conference.

"We have accomplished the 'playing hard' part. We have to put the other things together."

State's offense, last in the ACC with an average of 69.4 points per game, has not improved as much as Lowe would like. State's 88-74 win over ACC-leading Duke on Jan. 20 showed what the Wolfpack is capable of, Lowe said, but it also demonstrated what the team has failed to duplicate since.

State shot 58.2 percent against the Blue Devils and got double-figure scoring from five players. The Pack hasn't shot that well, or had that type of balance, in the five games since, which have all been losses.

The Wolfpack's shooting woes hit a season low with a 20-of-70 (28.6 percent) effort against Virginia Tech. In 10 ACC games, State is 228-of-587 (38 percent), which is 10 points below its average in 15 nonconference games.

"If we just shoot the ball just a little bit better, it's a totally different game," Lowe said. "I'm not saying we have to shoot it great, just a little bit better, it would have been a different year so far."

Poor shooting has only been part of the Wolfpack's problems. Getting consistent production from someone other than forward Tracy Smith, the team's leading scorer at 17.4 points per game, has been a problem. Junior point guard Javi Gonzalez started the season well, taking control of the team and providing a consistent source of perimeter scoring, but his production - and playing time - have fluctuated in ACC play.

Gonzalez, who averages 9.9 points per game, played 17 minutes in Wednesday's loss, the third time against an ACC opponent he has played fewer than 20 minutes. He scored two points against the Hokies - his fifth ACC game with fewer than seven points - but he also has a 19-point outing against UNC, 18 against Wake Forest and 15 against Duke.

"I don't know if it's confidence or concentration," Lowe said. "At times, he's playing around with the ball too much. When he's going straight [to the basket], he's different."

Injuries have limited the contributions of senior guard Farnold Degand and freshman forward Richard Howell. Degand missed one ACC game with a thigh bruise and was visibly slowed in Wednesday's loss.

Howell cut his leg running onto the court for warmups on Wednesday. He could only play three minutes against the Hokies. When those two are healthy, State is a different, and more complete, team.

The Wolfpack needs to win four of its final six ACC games to match last season's 6-10 conference record and three more wins to exceed last season's overall win total.

That would be measurable progress Lowe could point to as he welcomes a recruiting class that includes highly rated guards Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown.

A win today, though, which would be State's first at Chapel Hill against Roy Williams, could help ease the current problems.

"There's no question it could be a game that could start something good," Lowe said.

Its amazing how much some of you have in common with Fowler.

Sidney would go a long way towards restoring his credibility by winning today. Even against a crappy UNC team.

We've got a lot of problems, but if we shoot a little better, those problems wouldn't be such a big deal. I really can't believe how many open looks our team misses. Lowe nailed it here:

the situation according to packboozie:
1. UNC is the more talented team
2. Roy Williams is a far superior coach
3. Yet you could argue that state should be favored today on UNC's home court? Your logical progression is DEEPLY flawed...

Those things aren't really incompatible with each other.

1) UNC has more raw talent, but it's mostly on the inside and they don't have a good enough distributor of the ball to take advantage of it.

2) Roy Williams is one of the Top 5 coaches in the history of college basketball by the numbers. Lowe has the worst ACC winning % in NC State history.

3) I think you can argue we deserve to be favored without Davis playing.

Shut the fuck up you clowns.

We have what three guys ranked in the top 100 getting minutes today? And one of them is Painter. Don't even attempt the talent argument.

Howell I'm not counting because he can barely move.

Great job by Painter in the first half filling in for an injured Howell. He made a basket, blocked a shot, and drew a three second call on great help side rotation. Javi has to step it up he was pretty blah and I expected another big game from him. Horner actually did a good job until the final four minutes of the half where he started fucking up. Degand didn't offer anything. Wood still can't get his shot to fall consistently (even badly missed a FT?!). Davis did some nice things but his turnover was brutal. Cj throwing the ball away on the floor was ridiculous.

Great job by the guys to get us back into this game right before half. We really need to come out with some intensity and get on the boards in the 2nd half. With Howell being out we really haven't been able to take enough advantage of Davis being out.

We played probably our best defense of the season for awhile there but we really looked lost on our rotations the last ten minutes of the half. Carolina is getting too many open shots off screens, we have to get it together.

We will have to rely on Wood/Javi hitting shots for us to win this game. That's not a great thing to rely on, hopefully they will come through...

You should give a coach credit for every game he wins. But how much credit are you asking for?? It's the game that is deciding who should be the last place team in the league. We shouldn't even be in this fucking position in his 4th year. If it wasn't UNC we were playing, I honestly don't know if I would really give a shit.

I know it's irrelevant... but taking Sid and the Wolfpack out of the conversation, what possible excuse does Roy have for being in this position in his 7th year at UNC? and his 22nd year as a Div-1 head coach? and having 7 McDAAs? and being the reigning national champions?

Please boozie, don't kill me. Since you think all the reasons that have been given in defense of Sid are bad excuses, I'd really like to hear your argument about Roy. Why is his team so shitty? Is it a lack of talent? Or should Roy be let go?

Boozie, you really need to think about your statements a little more before you post. Drew is averaging 2 assist per game MORE than Javi (btw Drew is 2nd in the acc in APG). He is 4th in the conference in assist to turnover ratio (almost 2:1) Javi doesn't even crack the top 10. The only aspect in which Javi is superior is he scores 1 more point a game. So the statics back me up and and your argument is "the unc fans want him out" yup you really know your basketball.

Boozie, if you can't answer my question, you've lost all credibility with me. What the hell do you want dude? Yes, UNC is having a shitty year and there is no good excuse for it. All the above if you want an answer to your question. Roy has sucked this year, their talent sucks, and their recruiting sucked. That's why all their fans are fucking pissed and the media is going crazy.

The difference is that Roy has a long history of success in all those areas, and WON THE FUCKING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP last year. So one year of sucking it up can be thrown out as an outlier. All we've seen from Lowe is shitty recruiting, shitty talent, and shitty coaching. There is no reason to think it's going to get any better.

Sorry NyM if I'm mucking up this otherwise thread of objective and realistic talk of Sid's credibility, but hopefully the mods will allow this slight diversion.

If you think it's fair to say that Sid has no credibility as a college coach after 3.5 years (and the circumstances), then what the fuck is going on with Roy? I just don't understand your way of thinking. I'm trying to understand it.

Quote :

I want somebody who has a lot of college basketball knowledge to explain to me why a heralded great coach of a returning national championship team loaded with highly recruited players is having such a terrible season. Take Sid out of the conversation. I know that will go against the title of this thread, but again, i think the mods will allow it.
