Well it was a $200 mistake. I don't think the wife will let me use the case again. But for $200 I got a D40 body, another battery, 4 gig SD card and grip for it. Odds are I'm not going to use the grip though. If I wanted a pro camera I could get a D2H and get an actual (older) pro camera for close to the same price.
9/3/2010 8:15:57 PM
What makes you opposed to using the grip?
9/3/2010 8:48:25 PM
One advantage of the D40 is the smaller size. Also the grip only communicates with the camera via an infrared diode so it acts like a remote. No burst shooting and you can't use the main shutter release. Also you have to pop out the diode to actually use it.
9/3/2010 8:59:00 PM
Ahhhh. That doesn't sound too convenient then.Just curious. I use my battery grip all the time.[Edited on September 3, 2010 at 9:02 PM. Reason : I shoot canon]
9/3/2010 9:00:05 PM
many of the higher end Nikons (D40 is the lowest end) will work much better with a grip. With a more substantial body I could see a grip being really nice. Or just a pro body camera.

Sorry to hear about the death of your D40.I think in that situation I would have just saved up to buy an Ikelite housing, but that's just me. Then again they're $1,400 for the D40... I have an Ikelite housing for my A570IS P&S and it has worked great so far. I've used it in the ocean and in the caves down to maybe 110ft, I believe it is rated for 200ft. The official Canon housing for my camera is only rated to 130ft.Of course the price for my housing was outrageous -- $270 housing for a $130 camera. My wife actually bought it for me as a birthday present two years ago.
9/3/2010 9:12:34 PM
Yeah I had less than $100 in the housing and it isn't like it failed.I failed by not really closing it. Oh well. Maybe one day I'll take it out again. For $1400 I'd just get a camera in the ~$1000 range and try again. [Edited on September 3, 2010 at 9:34 PM. Reason : I don't learn my lessons.]

i got some money coming my way, might buy/build a steady cam system
9/4/2010 12:41:26 AM
I was trying to use the death of my camera to get a D90 or a D300 but the wife wouldn't go for that. Anyway it saved me $600-$700.
9/4/2010 10:27:09 AM
Maybe I should make my own housing while my camera is still under warranty... As long as the water damage isn't from "full submersion" I'll be golden.
9/4/2010 12:27:22 PM
It sure didn't take anything close to "full submersion" to kill mine, that's for sure. I'm sure a more sealed body would have fared better.
9/4/2010 2:00:23 PM
well don't feel so bad, my boss down in Miami bricked a new 1ds mkIII and an 85 1.2L from sea water because an assistant didn't tighten the wing nuts in the proper order to get a proper seal. I actually have it with me and plan to clean it out and make it into a fish tank accessory or something. I'm also trying to see if I can clean the 85 and just use it for manual focus, but the damn focus ring is seized and need a special tool to remove the baring housing.
9/4/2010 3:12:57 PM
I had fun taking it apart. I was amazed at how much damage there was to some of the circuit. It was great seeing all the inner workings though.
9/4/2010 3:33:32 PM
should see the 1d, it's amazing how much is in it. Just to get access to the sensor, it's like 10 pcb cards stacked on top of one another with ribbon cables and wires all over the place. I can't open like the last two boards because the screws are stripped.

quick snapshot of today's lunchin with some friends. Ended up climbing a lamp pole to get about 10 feet off the ground to take that pic, was kind of comical since I was hugging on while leaning a bit off to get the right angle.

^^ well those have been around for a long time, just trying to figure out if there is a new meme or pop culture reference that explains the sudden surge in "one of these things is not like the others" quotes I have been seeing
9/6/2010 1:43:35 AM
I donno, I've said it for a long time when things stand out, usually involving some sort of race or size funny discussion. And lol on the 'what does it mean' reference. Now that's a new pop culture ref

this made me think of you JBaz:http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/09/hdr-video-accomplished-using-dual-5d-mark-iis-is-exactly-what-i/Too bad you don't have two.

^ I found this video to be very intriguing, more so the person than the boringish panorama of the city.
9/9/2010 9:32:15 PM
^^ how do you get exactly the same viewpoint at exactly the same time? i guess they just crop it?
9/10/2010 12:00:11 PM
^ did you read or just watch the video - it said how they got it
9/10/2010 12:02:28 PM
tl;dr

special adapter to split the rays to two cameras. It's alright, nothing really excited me with that demo. I mean it's interesting to say the least, but what they showed wasn't so extraordinary and thought the contrast seemed a bit too low for the most part. If they get their blending right, it would be nice, but 90% of the HDR's I've seen aren't done well, and fuck doing that for video. too much work. lolJust be like everyone else, shoot what you can get, control you light as much as possible and everything else do in post or CGI. :p

Collectively, they would win the race because 4 of them would box him in and the rest would go on to the finish line...

Boomsday - biggest firework display on labor day. I had the second best seats in the house, you can see who had the best.
9/10/2010 8:34:14 PM
That would really piss me off having them in my shot like that. But excellent pictures nonetheless.
9/10/2010 8:38:44 PM
They were with the news station, we were guests. To the right were the newscasters so oh well. They caught me on camera during it and apparently I was on tv the whole time.
9/10/2010 8:42:02 PM
I might straighten a couple of those...
9/10/2010 8:58:12 PM
that's a pretty decent school for being so close and all. I'll toss in a few.
9/10/2010 9:46:16 PM
lol d7. I cropped to the bridge but whatever. I didn't have a tripod, didn't want to lug one all day so I used the um thinger the barge ties to to steady my camera. hence crooked pics, not on purpose! lol
9/10/2010 9:53:29 PM
^^Is that the same school? Looks like the same auditorium.^so straighten them in Photoshop or something. The few that are crooked distract me from the fireworks. (unless it's the Kiwi-crop you were going for )
9/10/2010 10:01:06 PM
The only one that may be crooked is the first one cause I didn't mess with it but the others I straightened. I cropped to the bridge line sooooooooooo they should be straight?????
9/10/2010 10:06:55 PM
yep. i'm sure its changed a bit over the years. I think I first visited in '07.I like the auditorium dark, so we closed off most of the windows and pulled the dark curtain closed. Though I'm sure by now that nice curtain could have been destroyed by others.
9/10/2010 10:08:36 PM
How do you guys get access to these buildings...I'm assuming it's, uh, sneaky access. There's just nothing like that around where I live. And what is around is damned hard to get into...or if you do get in, you risk getting shot.
