So are we gonna fire him end of this season? Or watch him bleed the program to death then think about replacing him

It looks like he at least learned that the fans don't appreciate blown smoke after another ugly loss. He looked/sounded pissed and went about as negative as you will hear a coach go about the team. Specifically said we need to learn how to guard somebody

The biggest debacle here is that our current team was the "scout" team for a year against our first string last year. They had a year of practicing and playing against a "starting" ACC squad, and are this shit.
1/15/2017 9:31:29 PM
^^About 12 games too late for that bullshit.
1/15/2017 9:37:59 PM
^^Thats not really true, only 3 players were sitting out. Henderson and DSJ were recovering from injuries most of last season. Dorn really only one who fits that bill.^yea Giglio asked basically why are you just now pissed and he dodged[Edited on January 15, 2017 at 9:39 PM. Reason : Gig]

he was known as an awful defensive coach when he was hired

Two things I really don't understand about this Gott team:1. With the athleticism and depth we have, why don't we press more? Or least pick up at half court? GT has no ballhandlers, yet we apparently made things easy on them.2. WHY IS OUR TRANSITION OFFENSE SO SHITTY? It's like we have no idea how to run an effective fast break. We have guys who are deadly in transition yet we walk the ball up the court most of the time -- even after steals. The few times we do fast break, our spacing/cutting is awful. Other teams get rebounds and fly down the court while maintaining good spacing -- even lowly teams like GT.You have to coach players how to run fast breaks. UNC spends countless hours on it. Yet Gott just seems to assume the guys will figure it out and focus all his attention on half-court offense. Embarrassing how little we score in transition considering how athletic we are
1/15/2017 11:47:21 PM
I always liked Gottfried so I hate to see it end like this barring a miracle turn around. Either his lack of teaching defense, or the teams refusal to play defense is going to do him in. Unless he gets a get out of jail free card from Debbie's impending retirement.
1/16/2017 12:20:46 AM
^^We've been a pretty good transition offense in previous seasons under Gott. I think since DSJ is such a good passer, he forces it sometimes which leads to costly turnovers and potentially fast break points for the other team. I agree about more press defense though.

You guys should have listened to me when i told you to bail on the season after the Creighton game.Ive never seen a State team this bad. And the ACC is brutal this year. Im just glad we got a win early because 1-17 is definitely on the table. These guys are gonna go full meltdown/ quit mode now
1/16/2017 2:41:40 AM
maybe bobby lutz had been coaching them up in prev seasons. hell if i know. sucks cause gott is decent at recruiting and thats over half the job [Edited on January 16, 2017 at 6:32 AM. Reason : d]

Gotta agree with face on this one. Everyone wants to call those who saw this coming debbie downers and that we dont know what we were talking about until it actually happens. Hate to see it happen was really hoping this was gonna be a decent year but it was pretty obvious early on that this was gonna be a huge disappointment.
1/16/2017 8:31:12 AM
^^dont think he was on last year's staff. could be wrong but i dont remember him on the sidelines and this...http://gopack.com/roster.aspx?roster=114&path=mbball
1/16/2017 8:38:10 AM
lutz is in that picture, beside Gott (below Anya and Abu). the coaching staff listed is incorrect. Pierre and Schoyer weren't on staff till this season (and are not pictured).[Edited on January 16, 2017 at 8:46 AM. Reason : d]

yeah, the Creighton loss was pretty damning, but i tried to stay optimistic and explained it away as 1) very young team in a November game and 2) still missing Yurt. after the Illinois game i was more concerned. and then the UNC game basically cemented that we are a bad team this year. i can deal with getting behind big early in that game, but to have them go on, like, a 20-0 run in the 2nd half after they were already up 20+ - that was inexcusable and showed a real lack of give-a-shit. i mean, if you aren't busting your ass after getting completely embarrassed in the first half by your rival, then you're never gonna bust your ass.
1/16/2017 8:59:31 AM
I'm getting this strange LSU flashback from last year.
1/16/2017 9:09:55 AM
It's time to move on. If we can't beat teams like BC and GT with this roster, then what more can we expect? Glad Gott helped us back from the doldrums of Sid Lowe, but it's time to go in another direction. Archie or Keatts are very solid options that we should be able to afford even if we are still overpaying Gott.Honestly I'd like us to make a move soon and not completely waste this roster and a recruiting cycle. Maybe we don't get Archie or Keatts mid-season, but hand the job over to a current assistant who can maybe salvage something from this season. Gott has clearly lost the team.
1/16/2017 9:10:10 AM
The only thing I don't like about firing a coach mid-season is that all too often in those situations the interim coach does a passable job and they end up getting hired on the cheap and then we are stuck with 2-3 years of Butch Pierre (which may actually be an improvement to Gott, but I'd rather shoot higher).
1/16/2017 9:26:20 AM
How often do teams pull new HCs in mid-season? Definitely heard of firing coaches but Keats or Archie dumping their current teams seems unlikely and unsportsmanlike
1/16/2017 11:52:05 AM
I don't think anyone expects Archie or Keatts to quit mid-season. Just to start greasing the tracks with both to know they are targets. Let some interim coach try and save this season. Also an interim coach worked out pretty damn well with Clemson and Dabo so you never know.
1/16/2017 12:16:28 PM
yeah i don't think you're gonna hire away a coach in mid-season. only real way that happens if you're hiring an assistant (even then, it seems unlikely) or a coach that is currently out of work. if somebody is fired mid-season, almost every time an interim coach is going to finish out the season.
1/16/2017 12:18:31 PM
Of course we aren't going to hire away any sort of desireable coach mid-season guys... Doesn't mean firing a coach mid-season can't happen.
1/16/2017 12:42:55 PM
main thing to remember here is that Gott and Yow were friends before we hired him and it was almost like he was doing us a favor in an otherwise embarrassing coaching search. I just don't see an AD on her way out firing her friend (assuming that narrative is true)
1/16/2017 1:18:30 PM
well that doesn't make any sense at all, i've learned on this site that we are a top-10 most desirable job so he certainly must have just been the most qualified coach from a top-notch field of candidates
1/16/2017 2:10:24 PM
everyone wants to coach here.
1/16/2017 2:12:30 PM
1/16/2017 2:16:29 PM
^yall still harpin on that huh? that was me... i'll open it up again.looks like no one agrees, thats fine, but no one is stepping up to say anything either. if theres clearly more than 10. (which it seems like everyone else thinks) then i guess ~25 might be the number? I would love to learn something new about the 15 additional schools and why we aren't on par with them simply as a program.
1/16/2017 2:49:50 PM
so if we are a top-10 program, why do we struggle with each coaching search?
1/16/2017 2:58:50 PM
we were publicly turned down by multiple mid major coaches during the last 2 coaching searches ... that, a top-10 job, doesn't make.you're wrong.
1/16/2017 3:27:42 PM
To be fair he's pivoted to saying it's a top 25 job now, but it's hard to get past the ridiculousness of his top 10 argument.
1/16/2017 3:39:32 PM
i think i get what packguitar is saying...you're looking at it in a kinda tiered way. there's the most elite jobs in the country, say 5 or so of those. then there's a second tier of not-quite-elite-but-still-super-good jobs rounding out the top 10 or so. and after that there's a 3rd tier of jobs that maybe you could argue we're in that tier. not that packguitar is saying there's only 10 jobs better...but that there's only 10 jobs significantly better and we're more or less in the same neighborhood as the next group/tier of jobs (just guessing, but say in that 11-20 range). personally, i disagree...in large part because we haven't won a conference championship in like 30 years. sure, you can argue that a job's potential isn't necessarily dictated by what that program has or has not accomplished in the last couple decades. nonetheless, i do think it's a factor...we've been almost completely irrelevant on the national stage since Jim Valvano. without actually listing out the number jobs that are imo more desirable than ours, i think i can put us in the "above average P5 job, but significantly below the traditional powers" range. whatever range that is...maybe 30ish or something, i don't know. i say we're slightly above the average P5 program because we play in the best conference, we do have some real, tangible history (even if it's ancient), we are in a talent-rich state, as far as i can tell we have nice facilities and are building that basketball dorm which can only be a positive for recruiting imo.[Edited on January 16, 2017 at 3:43 PM. This year reminds me a lot of the JJ Hickson season. We brought back a bunch of talent, had a lottery pick coming in as a frosh, and the expectations proceeded to sky rocket through the roof. However, there was a glaring weakness that everybody overlooked until it was too late, and this year is no different.
1/16/2017 4:23:50 PM
What makes yall think Yow is going to fire Gottfried? In the DD thread, you all seem to think a change cant be made until Yow retires. How is this any different?
1/16/2017 4:42:41 PM
1/16/2017 4:52:47 PM
If Yow actually gave a shit, she would have fired Gott this morning. This roster is about the best collection of talent we can expect. We need to go all in on this year and try to right the ship. Ultimately firing Gott and putting in some assistant can't possibly lead to worse results. 51 pt loss to UNC followed by BC and GT losses. That is pretty much rock bottom for any ACC team. What worries me now too is this recruiting cycle. Why would any 4-5* player watching this dumpster fire of a team want to play here unless they just want to get buckets.[Edited on January 16, 2017 at 4:55 PM. Reason : sd]
1/16/2017 4:54:55 PM
yeah being a shitty team with a coach that squanders talent and is on the hot seat is pretty easy for opposing coaches to recruit against.
1/16/2017 5:07:15 PM
Coaches don't usually get fired mid-season unless there are off-the-court issues. Just a general statement about coaches in general.[Edited on January 16, 2017 at 5:18 PM. Reason : .]
