^Surprising, read he was a Tennessee lean most of his recruitment.Calhoun is a track scholarship for now, if he makes the team and doesn't redshirt this year, he'll count towards football, but no way he plays this year. Basically we get a scholarship-free redshirt year for the kid to see if he's good enough to actually warrant taking up a scholarship spot on the team. If he's not we tell him no thanks and let him stick to track, if he is good enough then he eats up a scholarship that he earned. It's like a football internship.
5/14/2014 8:19:57 AM
if he makes the team, he would immediately be counted as a FB scholarship, regardless of if he redshirts. no free year of practicing with the team.
5/14/2014 9:05:03 AM
^yeah but that's if he "competes" in football. Does that mean it only counts if he sees game action? If so, I would think he'd be able to "redshirt" scholly-free. But I don't know much about these rules, so I'm just speculating.
5/14/2014 12:45:19 PM
^Yeah I took "compete" to mean at least made the active-roster.
5/14/2014 12:48:15 PM
I think it only counts if he is actually "competitive". Which means the big positive we got out of last year was that no one used a scholarship.

We got a verbal from South Carolina Athlete Freddie Phillips this morning
5/20/2014 4:17:32 PM
played WR in High School.Had interest from some decent SEC teams. Not a bad pickup, chances are we will move him to defense.
5/20/2014 8:21:43 PM
He's our one commit at S for this year. We actually had to turn down a commitment from 3* S Jarius Morehead because we were only taking 1 S in this class and the staff knew Phillips planned on committing to us and Morehead was just trying to commit before the spot got filled.Think we're done at WR and S unless some big-time recruit all of a sudden wants to commit to us.
5/21/2014 8:25:43 AM
Yeah from what I've read it sounds like the staff is trying to fill a few needs and then go after the best player available at a few positions. We can't take too many this year with how big the 2014 class was - tons of freshmen and sophomores on next year's team.
5/21/2014 10:47:10 AM
That's not encouraging at all. I am not very familiar with our depth chart, because none of the players are worth knowing at this point, but if we are playing a lot of underclassman next year, there is no way we can contend for the conference championship. And with our inability to recruit a top 10 QB, there is no way we will be contending in 3-4 years.
5/21/2014 12:53:53 PM
5/21/2014 12:58:20 PM
Was referring to our current coaching staff. They have not shown any ability to land a highly rated QB, and it is apparent that they can't coach up a mid-level rated QB. We are going to need a QB better than Rivers or Wilson if we want to be successful.
5/21/2014 1:02:29 PM
^^^So what you're saying is there's no point in having a team and you're going to stop following them?

I don't know shit about our team because they can't win a fucking conference game. I don't give credit to our coaching staff because they cant win a fucking conference game. I have given up on this team because they cant win a fucking conference game. If you have time to spend with this shit, good for you. Most fans dont.My point is that, if we have a bunch of underclassmen playing important roles over the next few years, we would expect the development to pay off in years 3 and 4. The same time that we would be breaking in a new QB, which comes with a steep learning curve, even with a great QB like Glennon, which we dont have.

^^Exactly. We had no experienced talent on the team last year. There's a reason we only had one player get drafted last year, and it wasn't until the 4th round. Let's give these guys a couple more years at least before we say they can't develop talent.

Stop asking people to be reasonable.

I've never understood how any NC State fan hasnt grasped the reality of being a fan. Assume we are going to lose every single game, in some ridiculous or crushing fashion, and when we occasionally win just be happy we won a game.Life will be much easier I promise.

I'm encouraged by the delusional fans and their sinking attitudes. Means better season tickets will be available once the ship starts getting turned around.

Missed on Kendall Hinton. Another miss on a QB, this time to that powerhouse known as Wake Forest. Maybe we can find a preferred walk-on. We seem to be doing good with those.

6/11/2014 10:21:43 PM
^pretty sure it was the other way around, the staff really wanted Hinton.
6/11/2014 10:55:31 PM
Honestly, it seemed like Hinton just didn't want to come to NC State. Remember that Duke was his leader before they backed off and went another direction. Only then did NC State seem like a real player for Hinton. Then Wake's new staff comes in and offers him a shot to start right away and bam...Wake Forest commitment. We just offered King yesterday, after the Hinton commitment to Wake...so I don't think the staff chose Hinton on the spot. Hearing about King's performances at the Elite 11 Combines...it doesn't sound like hes any slouch though. I expect he'll come in hoping to compete with McClendon in a couple years.Honestly though, I don't care about this years QB class. We weren't gonna get a stud to come in here and sit behind Jacoby for a year and then have to battle McClendon for two more years. The 2016 class is full of studs though. Could be 3 QB's in NC alone that are 4*'s.
6/12/2014 6:19:07 AM
Yeah I think Hinton wanted a better chance to start right away, and Wake could make more "promises" for him than we could. No way Hinton would come in and start over returning senior Brissett right away, and we have 4* McClendon sitting there behind him ready to go. Always thought this year would be a hard sale to a highly rated QB, but because of our depth we really have to sign at least 1(though moving the Sheriff back to QB will help #'s). The coaches have already started working on those top 3 QBs in NC next year, and we'll be able to offer more opportunities as they'll come in with no returning starter(barring McClendon just killing it and taking the job from Brissett) and a legit chance to compete for the starting job right out of the gate(with King and McClendon).
6/12/2014 8:10:13 AM
Alabama...Wake Forest...Liberty recruiting
6/12/2014 9:29:20 AM
I'm in the camp that says getting a major QB in this class wasn't necessary, but there is the added disappointment of the domino effect. He's a local QB with ties to a lot of our other prospects. There were thoughts that his commitment could have started off a string of other guys committing in the next couple weeks.Hopefully that won't be the case and we'll still get our top targets.
