So apparantly, not only is Steve Jobs a smug asshole, but he also doesn't have a clue how half the things on his phone work.http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/25/steve-jobs-on-future-wireless-iphone-syncing-replacement-of-hold-button-with-facetime/

soanyone actually used the video talk thing or whatever they're calling it? are there any apps that use it or will in the near future?
6/25/2010 12:00:00 PM
I tried it out at a bar last night. My friend couldn't make it out so we used facetime to say what's up. It was mostly dark where we were and i was really amazed at both the front and back camera and how clear/smooth the video was. It wasn't HD or anything but it's totally useable and pretty awesome. I'll be using it more often.
6/25/2010 12:03:34 PM
I've tried it out with my dad a couple of times. It's about what you'd expect. I went over to my sister's house last night and we called him up and talked a bit. I guess it's pretty neat. Supposedly Skype is working on integrating Facetime in their newest App so I would assume at that point you will be able to talk to anyone with a webcam and not just people with iPhone4s. I can't figure out why Apple wasn't there on day 1 with at least an OSX Facetime App so the pool of people you'd be able to talk to would actually include more than just the select few that got iPhones yesterday.heh. I guess if you don't have someone to talk to, you can always call Apple. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/25/no-one-to-test-facetime-with-call-apple/]

Anyone tried any jailbreaks on the iphone 4 yet?
6/25/2010 12:31:23 PM
6/25/2010 12:49:24 PM
How is everyones battery life with this thing? Mine is less than stellar, after charging overnight I'm down to 75% in two hours, I'm guessing it's because I'm constantly going from 4 bars down to 1 bar or "searching" everytime I pick it up. Had the same experience yesterday, charged it overnight Wednesday night and was down to 20% by 7:30pm.
6/25/2010 12:53:23 PM
Yeah i don't know. It's supposed to be better than the 3gs and that engadget review said they got like 38 hours out of it with normal use. Who here uses gmail push? They told my mom at the apple store that her battery was going so quickly because she was using gmail push and that fetch would increase her battery life. Other than that i don't know. Last night it dropped 10% just from sitting in standby. That doesn't make any sense.
6/25/2010 1:44:28 PM
mine's been pretty darn good. do you have anything running in the background constantly that could be pulling data frequently?
6/25/2010 1:45:20 PM
That's another thing. The multitasking isn't really casuing programs to run in the background. They just allow certain programs to do tasks in the background like gps or music. But yeah pretty much any app you open up shows in the multitasking app so i don't know how that works and if any of those apps are actually doing anything.
6/25/2010 1:46:26 PM
yeah ... wish there was a selection for which apps to automatically multitask, and which to not do it with ... cause thats a bit annoying.
6/25/2010 1:53:59 PM
6/25/2010 2:24:52 PM
Yeah i know this i'm just saying any app you open sits in the multitasking thing at the bottom and i'm wondering which of them actually do things. Like if facebook updates etc.
6/25/2010 2:44:51 PM
I don't know why so many people seem to be getting hung up on this. There is no such thing as multitasking. NONE of them run in the background. A couple of them (notably pandora) run services in the background, like audio, but most of the iOS 4 enabled apps don't do anything special except for support the "fast switching" feature. i.e. they quickly save their state before shutting down and the next time you open the app it restores the state making it appear that it was "running" the whole time. Which means "the thing at the bottom" isn't really a list of apps that are still running, but just your most recently used apps. Stop thinking of it as a task manager and it all starts making sense. (at least Apple's special version of sense anyway)
6/25/2010 3:04:31 PM
There seems to be a lot of confusion about multitasking -- the following new things can run in the background: GPS, Music, VOIP, and task completion. That's it. Everything else just goes to a suspended state (this is why it shouldn't kill your battery). Apps that are in the background can't collect new information -- like, say you have Facebook multitasked -- the News Feed won't keep automatically updating the background; if you have ESPN multitasked, the scores won't update automatically. The app is literally paused. So when you swap back to either of them, then need to reload new information. They can't do it automatically. You still get information the same way you did before: push notifications. It's expanded a bit so that there are now "local" notifications, which to quote Apple: "Your app can now alert users of scheduled events and alarms in the background, no servers required."

I know when it first came out there was those instructions on how to set it up and it did involve something like setting it up as an exchange type account. But there's also the setting in the mail settings tab that says Push (On/Off) that is turned on by default (at least it was on all three of the phones I configured with gmail yesterday) if you just configure a "standard" gmail account in the mail app. And just using those default settings, all I know is that my email wouldn't show up without me manually checking for it. With fetch it shows up just fine (albeit with a potential 15 minute delay, but I can live with that)]
6/25/2010 3:21:45 PM
twice the price.half the featuresX times the marketing
6/25/2010 3:30:16 PM
Yeah i don't think that's correct. I deleted my exchange account and set up gmail and made sure "push" was on, but fetch was set to manual. The email never comes. I think if you set up gmail with the gmail option it's only fetch. The only way to get gmail push working on the iphone is setting it up as an exchange account via google's instructions:http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740&topic=14252^of what? Finally figured out the problem with FaceTime on my mom's phone. For some reason when they were setting up her account they disabled text messaging on just her phone (but I guess not mine or my dad's even though we are all on the same plan) and I guess it requires a text message for FaceTime to be activated. I ended up calling that 888-Facetime number and then AT&T customer support to get texting added and after a reboot she's good to go.

^^^I had heard about it, but assumed it was some hating person's joke in Engadget comments. I should have known Jobs might actually say something like that With the Evo still out of stock (and no indication when it might come back into stock, unlike Apple/AT&T, who in the past have told me exactly when they're getting a shipment), I've actually found myself considering the iPhone 4, despite how much I hated my old iPhones not having native turn-by-turn or Google Voice.
6/26/2010 12:48:09 AM
^^ ditto. I mean, if you don't want to hear someone talk, don't bother to answer their call. That's what iBlacklist is for. btw has anyone used the iElegance Pro Theme (got it from Cydia)? I thought it would change all the Apple-standard-app icons (by that I mean Safari, App store, etc.) but it doesn't do that. It has only changed the icons on the buttons which are onscreen while you're in a call (well, and other things too, but I'm just talking about icons here). Anyone who happened to use that theme have that problem?[Edited on June 26, 2010 at 5:52 AM. Reason : just askin']

anyone else update tomtom yet? it's was a pretty substantial update, runs better and looks much better.
6/26/2010 9:19:22 AM
Ok, shame on Apple for trying to pretend this isn't a problem. My friend hands me his phone for the first time last night, and I'm hold it in my left hand the same way I've been holding my 3G for 2 years. I honestly wasn't even thinking about the reception issue, I was too fucking blown away by the phone itself, but within a minute it goes from full bars to searching. I literally died laughing, what a ridiculously bad fuck up. It's almost unbelievable that the phone got to the end user like this. They can't just ignore this and hope people forget about it. They need to start making moves to fix this and quick.
6/26/2010 11:17:57 AM
^ hellz yeahOTOH, if they don't, and iPhone 4s suddenly become really cheap on ebay, I can get one jk, I'm so over the iPhone4
6/26/2010 11:42:28 AM
Anyone try this on a 3GS that's not running iOS4? Otherwise, it seems unusual that people are seeing the same problem on 3GS and no one noticed it before.
6/26/2010 12:53:47 PM
I have yet to encounter this antenna problem with my phone, and I've TRIED really hard to replicate it. I guess I am not conductive.
6/26/2010 1:12:49 PM
^3gs or 4?
6/26/2010 1:21:28 PM
iPhone 4 playanothin but the hot shit for me
6/26/2010 1:33:53 PM
I'm seeing the AT&T network problem and a wifi problem. Holding it or laying it on a table my wifi signal is weaker than it was on my 3g. Running speedtest over wifi as close to simultaneously as possible with the 4 and the 3g the 3g has had consistently faster d/l speeds.I would really like the "upgrade" if all of my ways of connecting didn't seem downgraded.
6/26/2010 4:01:25 PM
Today I tried to reproduce the holding the phone (3Gs) and having the signal drop issue and couldn't get it to do it after multiple attempts.Bizzare.[Edited on June 26, 2010 at 8:15 PM. Reason : *]
6/26/2010 8:14:35 PM
^ same here, can't replicate on 3GS(FWIW, I figured out my Theme problem. the default order of the Themes in Winterboard wasn't the order it needed to be in for it to work)

Interesting. I just gorilla gripped my 3G and I was able to get it to drop from 5 to 3 bars repeatedly. I used both hands and covered as much of the bottom of the phone as possible. The antenna is at the bottom so it makes sense.I wonder if this is repeatable on other phones as well? Can someone with a non iphone try this experiment and post the results?Ohh yeah, and I am running 3.1.2 not iOS 4.[Edited on June 27, 2010 at 12:17 AM. Reason : .]
