(Beta does have an impact, though. Risk-adjusted return is what people chase. If you had a crystal ball and knew that Company 1 would return 2x with Y amount of volatility, and Company 2 would return 1.5X with 0.5Y volatility, you'd take Company 2, all things being equal. If you wanted greater returns, you'd just do it with leverage, and still take less risk for the same return as Company 1...or more return for the same risk as Company 1.)

^, ^^Thanks, that makes sense and helps put things in perspective.

VTI FTW today.
11/14/2023 1:27:25 PM
Dude I purchased more VTI at the right time, not that it matters in the long term, but holy crap. My underrated tech stocks are booming too, steadily. Made a consistent 5% in gains in just a few business days. There was one I wanted to get a few weeks ago, but didn't have enough freed up money, that also went up well, so I'm gonna say I was right about it. I think I might be a stock-picking genius.Thank you Biden
11/14/2023 1:34:30 PM
I know you are joking, but LOL.
11/14/2023 4:45:43 PM
Nope. You trying to make it hard for anyone else to reply to this thread on this page?Because you done did! And we have a lot of posts left to get to the next page. And time to edit your post expired. Unintentional poor form!]

Nice day out there!

So...I do some angel investing in startups. One of them got got acquired by Aerovironment (AVAV). They make the Switchblade drones we've been sending to Ukraine, among other things. The acquisition was back in September at a ~4.5x multiple from the round I invested in. That's a decent return on investment, and a really good IRR (I only held it for a little over 3.5 years.)Well, the deal was 14% cash and 86% stock. At first I was like "Aww man, I wish it was much more cash." That way I could get paid right away and reinvest in other startups (or some commercial real estate hard money lending I've also dipped a toe into)....but then AVAV took off like a rocket. It's up just shy of 50% since the acquisition. I'm in a lockup period until March, at which point I can liquidate half of the stock, so it could crash and burn between now and then, but if it stays on the current trajectory, it's gonna be stacks of additional cash on top of the original startup exit.
12/6/2023 12:08:51 AM
nice try, not investing in AVAVjk happy for you
12/6/2023 2:00:12 AM
haha i'm in a lockup period until March. Too early to pump & dump!
12/6/2023 6:47:39 PM
I bought at the absolute low of the last 2-3 months and I'm loving this, wow!
12/13/2023 5:23:47 PM
Now just keep steady buying and never selling for the rest of your working life and you'll be in good shape.
12/13/2023 7:22:06 PM
^ Yup. I'm gonna write my first VTI for you into my will in case that doesn't pan out, hahaHoly crap. I'm richThe Coz BRO g3t on

My portfolio is up 23% in the last month and a halfVTI/VDC steady and then the stuff I mentioned earlier
12/15/2023 4:43:01 PM
The challenge will be to resist the urge to tinker and spread funds around to the latest thing. VTI is itself a fully diversified (US stock only) investment vehicle. Making additional investments in the US results in skew or areas of market conentration, not greater diversification.
12/17/2023 7:22:37 AM
Yeah, I'm aware. It's the opposite of diversification.Especially with the size of portfolio, these semantics don't matter so much, but for my own satisfaction I like to also do some VDC with VTI cause I think consumer staples is cool.

Oh, we back!
12/19/2023 6:27:12 PM
I enjoy this.I'm not actively trading anything on a daily basis, nor do I have some huge or even big portfolio, but I check it every few days when I get reminded and have no complaints.
12/19/2023 6:34:01 PM
VTI hit 52-week high today and closed near it. w00t!]

Wise gamble or highly regarded?$HUMA - Humacyte Inc.Durham based outfit has bio-engineered implantable human tissue for vascular trauma. Clinical trials indicate that the tech has a higher success rate than the currently approved treatments. This tech is being used to treat trauma victims in Ukraine now.Humacyte submitted a Biologics License Application to the FDA on 12/12/23. Review period is 60 days. I realize that... -we're participants in a completely fraudulent market-it's hard to pick winnersCurrently trading at +/- $3.00 per share. Whatcha think fellas? Whenever I think of biotech finance, I imagine a few ignorant scientists being whipped inside a laboratory by a businessman like Norman with the military contract in Spiderman
1/23/2024 6:16:43 PM
The potential gains from 1K even at 10X are not meaningful. If you want to win big, you must bet big, and that is inextricably linked to the potential to lose big.

saw somebody talking about buying Spirit Airlines stock. That HAS to be some kind of wallstreetbets nonsense right? I mean aren't they regarded as a terrible airline?
1/24/2024 6:54:53 PM
Terrible airline doesn’t equal a terrible stock
1/24/2024 9:13:27 PM
long term it should
1/24/2024 10:08:46 PM
The M&A with JetBlue got blocked on antitrust grounds. Spirit's stock cratered; the fear is that they aren't gonna make it on their own (that, and I believe the buyout price was kinda ridiculously high). I haven't really followed this closely from an investor perspective, but I assume that the play is that Spirit will make it without being acquired by JetBlue and things aren't as bleak as they appear, and that maybe the deal with get approved on appeal for a major windfall (if you were to buy at this price and convert at the price originally set in the buyout deal.)
1/29/2024 12:51:02 AM
Yeah, well, maybe.
2/3/2024 6:50:14 PM
Nice stock tip on HUMA. I have made tens of dollars.
