if only they'd spend twice as much on a desktop with a touchscreen...and then spend time learning a new way to use their computer...this wouldn't be an issue

I use Windows 8 without a touchscreen and love it, its awesome with a mouse with a scroll wheel

I use Windows 8 without a touchscreen and hate it, its awful with a mouse with a scroll wheel

youre also wrong about the cost of touchscreens, touchscreen laptops are starting to be less expensive than non-touchscreen

i can get you a touchscreen desktop for $350[Edited on January 31, 2014 at 10:59 AM. Reason : quagmire still uses a Compaq Presario. Pentium 4 though!]
1/31/2014 10:57:01 AM
that's the best you've got?the facts are still the facts: metro on a desktop is stupid, especially in a business environmentthe consumer base seems to agree with that assessment...but yeah, we get it, you think metro is the tits no matter what, and there's no possible scenario where the "traditional" windows environment is more appropriate
1/31/2014 11:49:38 AM
the start screen is more efficient than the start menu[Edited on January 31, 2014 at 11:52 AM. Reason : consumer base = anti-m$ tech writers and bloggers]

if you say so, industry pro...shame no one else got the memo and folks are still (apparently) asking for windows 7 over windows 8

Mouse gestures don't work when starting up Windows 8? I always have to turn the mousepad off and on again to get them to work. Any solutions?
2/11/2014 9:05:15 AM
so...microsoft finally took their collective head out of their ass and are bringing back a "real" start menu...took them long enoughyou can also boot directly to the desktop...took them long enoughupdate rolls out on the 8th, i think
4/3/2014 6:04:12 PM
I like the boot directly to the desktop. Who really uses the start menu anymore though? What's this 1995? I guess I solely use a launcher to launch everything and my own file manager.[Edited on April 3, 2014 at 6:11 PM. Reason : s]
4/3/2014 6:10:53 PM
who uses a start menu? pretty much anyone on a desktop without a touchscreen, i would imaginewhat "launcher" are you talking about? and your own file manager?
4/3/2014 6:17:07 PM
^^ probably like 98% of Windows users.]
4/3/2014 6:30:33 PM
I use Launchy but the built in run shortcut works fine. Similar to spotlight in OSX. Why would anyone use the start menu to launch a program when they can just hit "window key + excel + enter key". It's way faster and you don't have to use the mouse. With windows 8 it's even faster to launch stuff. You just hit the window key then start typing. The mouse and touch screen are only efficient if you don't have a keyboard.
4/3/2014 6:41:33 PM
4/3/2014 6:44:43 PM
Well not the same way most people use the start menu. Yeah I have alt space set up for launchy.
4/3/2014 6:49:46 PM
are you just trying to be mr. cool guy or did you really think that most windows user do not use the start menu?
4/3/2014 7:33:05 PM
windows 8 sucks
4/3/2014 7:34:04 PM
Speaking of Windows 8, when does Windows 9 come out? Will it be for desktops/servers or is the plan to make one all encompassing OS that tries to be the best of both worlds but ends up being good for neither?
4/3/2014 9:07:47 PM
imagine that, another thread where its dtownral versus the world.windows 8 sucks, get over it, youre in the minority.simple.
4/3/2014 9:36:39 PM
Windows 8 may have an unfamiliar alternative UI, but it can be worked around, and Microsoft is making the workarounds easier with every major free upgrade; other than that, Windows 8 is faster, more stable, and more secure than Windows 7 (also native support for emoji FTW), and I wish I had pushed more people to upgrade to Win8 back when it was still cheap.I'm serious about it being more stable, like I haven't even seen a BSoD on Win8 yet, while I did see a couple on Win7 (and was disappointed when it looked just like on XP).[Edited on April 4, 2014 at 12:33 AM. When I said "who really uses the start menu anymore?" that implied ITT. The vast majority of things discussed in tech talk are relevant to us nerds not to the general populace.

I just ran the usual set of Windows Updates on my work computer today and then found that I had to manually download the Windows 8.1 Update 1 packages and install them in a certain order, rebooting three times in the process; it's good to know they'll soon be available through the Windows Update applet too, so I can just wait a little and do it all in one go on my home computer (also the explanatory videos are nice): http://windowsitpro.com/windows-81/getting-know-windows-81-update-1-while-you-wait-it
4/8/2014 5:38:49 PM
I love how in the videos they still use the "Ghost Hand" when getting around. Its like yea... no way to make this look clean with a mouse.Seems like their suggestion is to pile all your applications on the taskbar (i mean horizontal start menu) right now.
4/8/2014 9:30:06 PM
windows key + application + enter. Takes 2 seconds tops.

Goddamnit Heartbleed, 2.1gb in Windows 8.1 security updates?!?
4/9/2014 6:04:50 PM
Alt-tab doesn't behave how it used to. With Windows 7 it would always move to your last used application. With Windows 8 it appears to be more or less in the same order each time. Anyone notice that?

So another issue. My desktop is set to rotate through a bunch of wallpapers across three monitors. My laptop however I have set to a static one. Lately every time I restart my laptop the laptop tries to display all three wallpapers from my desktop instead of the single one I have selected in properties. I have to manually go into wall paper settings and go back to the single wall paper. Any ideas how to turn off syncing wallpaper? It's kind of stupid it's trying to display three on one screen...found it: turned off "Appearance sync" in sync settings. [Edited on May 26, 2014 at 11:27 AM. Reason : lets see if that works]

Has anyone used Start 8? It is pretty a fantastic Start menu replacement for Win8 . I don't understand why people don't pay 5$ for Start 8 instead of downgrading to Win 7.
5/28/2014 5:38:00 PM
I still don't see the point in the start menu. There''s a windows key on your keyboard. You hit it and start typing the program and it instantly pops up. What do you want to like browse what programs you have or something?
5/28/2014 6:57:20 PM
yeah, I'm much happier with Win8 after I finally ditched Start 8 and just adopted the start screen and just typing the name. I'm at the point now where I get frustrated when I have to use my Win7 CAD machine.
5/28/2014 7:00:52 PM
Just get Launchy for it. I still use it for Windows 8 as it's faster than the start menu and it allows you to do a lot more (math, search websites, etc).
5/28/2014 7:06:44 PM
nah, it looks like some decade old shit that would go well living beside AIM and Winamp
5/28/2014 7:51:31 PM
Haha it's a great application. I know a lot of people who use it. It's very similar to spotlight search in OSX and has a lot more features than the windows search. I can create custom searches on websites, do calculations, and launch applications and documents.

For the first time in 18 months of using Windows 8, I got this......instead of the occasional hard lock-ups and severe slow-downs while a bunch of filesystem activity was occurring. When I used Windows 7, the BSoDs were more frequent, and I was a little the first time I saw a Win7 BSoD and found they hadn't changed since Win2k.
8/12/2014 11:52:07 PM
I've only gotten them on my desktop running 8.1 when I try to install new Nvidia drivers. My work around is shutting down all my programs running (dropbox, displayfushion, etc). Haven't narrowed it down to which one it is. My work laptop on 8.1 seems to bsod every so often. I think it's a driver/dock issue when I wake from sleep. I assume Dell will fix it soon. Haven't had a bsod since the latest BIOS updated though.
8/13/2014 12:10:47 PM
A recent Windows Update may have caused BSoDs, if you've installed fonts in non-standard locations: https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2014/08/18/microsoft-pulls-patch-tuesday-kernel-update-ms14-045-can-cause-blue-screen-of-death/

^It wrecked my PC. Woke up this morning to Blue recovery screen.Took me a while to get everything sorted, but in the end no data loss and only an hour or so of fucking around. I'm still pretty irate, because none of the automatic recovery shit in Win8 worked. I had to do a manual chkdsk and disable UEFI to get my shit back.Going to be posting all up on Yammer tomorrow to start as big a shitstorm as I can (there's likely already a huge one, botched security updates are taken extremely seriously).
