"
Computer scoring was introduced to the Olympics in 1992. Each of the five judges has a keypad with a red and a blue button. The judges must press a button for which ever corner they feel lands a scoring blow. Three out of the five judges must press the button for the same boxer within a one-second window in order for the point to score. A legal scoring blow is that which is landed with the white knuckle surface of the glove, within the scoring area (middle of the head, down the sides and between the hips through the belly button, and the boxer can't be committing a foul (slapping, ducking head, wrestling, holding, etc). As long as the punches land within the scoring area, they are legal and that includes body punches, as well as those to the face. When computer scoring is used, and one opponent is leading by 20 points at any time before the fourth round, the referee is notified and the bout is stopped on an RSCOS - meaning the referee stopped the contest as the opponent was outscored."

anyone who would hate on Shalane Flanagan's race because she's from UNC is a jerk off. She's had an amazing year and now hold's the American record in all long-distance track events, a feat that certainly puts her up with the likes of Prefontaine. As a mediocre collegiate runner myself, with a 32:00 10k PR, i can't even imagine an American female runner going low 30:00s

I don't recall anyone dissing Michael Jordan, Marion Jones, Mia Hamm or Allen Johnson - all the best at their sport at one time or another (or of all time) - because they happened to go to Carolina.

so is there even a remote possibility we could catch china in golds? how many of next week's events are we favored in? 16 golds seems like quite a challenge to overtake

i can't imagine they'll win any/many golds in Track and Field. We'll certainly close the gap on them there, but don't know if we can overcome it completely

they said that Shawn Johnson didn't get as high of a start score as she wanted. I had presumed that the start scores would be calculated based on a rigid formula of each skill/technique/tumble they did, but apparently not? The judges can just "leave a tumble out" and not include it int the start score?

hmm, watching the 2nd heat of the men's 1500m, and they were talking about the American Leo Manzano - the short guy who was out front for the 2nd lap. The announcer mentioned "his coach, Jason Vigilante". NC State had a runner in the mid-90's named Jason Vigilante, and he was the Cross Country/Track Graduate Assistant in 1997-1999..... I wonder if it's the same one

edit - yep, same guy

chinese sprinter pulling out is anticlimactic. seeing a chinese guy who could run as fast as black guys was one of the biggest attractions coming in to the olympics

damn sucks for Liu Xiang and China.

I think the Chinese gymnasts usually go for harder routines. Probably why they still score higher.

the chinese guy that won the floor routine last night, IMO his routine was pretty weak...but I am no gymnast expert. It seemed a SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than the Brazilian who went right before him. The highly touted Brazilian had a great routine and fell on the last landing losing .8 points and had a 15.2 (ie a 16.0 if he lands it), but the chinese guy (whose routine seemed a lot more tame and much less impressive) scored a 16.2 with a few wobbles - does not compute.

Also, a spanish guy who nailed his routine (which also looked more impressive than the chinese, but slightly easier than the Brazilian's) still only got a 15.775

RIGGED

if you saw her landing in AA, you won't say that.
the gap between her feet was as wide as Pacific..

P.S. at least one Russian girl was more pretty can graceful than her

The women in the 400M hurdles didn't finish strong because those were just semi-finals, so no need to overexert themselves if they're already in the top 4.
The men in the 400M hurdles were just dying at the end of the incredibly hard race, but I don't think any of them pulled up.
