^^ In his defense, CharlieEFH first brought up herb (like he does in every single basketball game thread), skokiaan was just arguing against Charlie's points...

speaking of CharlieEFH, is he a carolina guy or state guy? i thought he was all about some unc but then he referred to state as "we" and "us"

here's to hoping he's not a carolina guy at state.

Haha at the fags chanting not our rival.

Nothing says that the rivalry may have just been rekindled than trying to deny it mid-game.

^ lawl, nicely put.

however, i stick to my stance that the word rival needs to be eliminated until people actually understand what it means. no more "duke and unc are rivals, end of discussion" shit that you hear so much. no more go "make" ecu your rival. as if you can even make up a rivalry, that's not how it works.

when did i say i was a UNC guy

i'm just an objective state fan

i see the big picture in the grand scheme of things whereas most of you only see red and nothing else

this was the game that mattered, not the one 3 weeks ago--winning 3 weeks ago was good but it was only a stepping stone to this game. had we won this game then we would have had something to really be proud of and gloat about for the next year. had we won we would have done it against a team that was pissed that they let us win the first time around and overcoming that would have been so much more sweeter than beating them when they didn't even give a shit about us 3 weeks ago.

win or lose i probably would brought that point up more directly but since sidney left the game the way he did and our team totally collapsed in the second half because he wasn't there the point wasn't worth making. the game essentially ended at half time...would have been nice to see what would have happened if Sid had stayed...or at least not left the game the way he did.

no, we didn't just win...but we didn't prove we were who they thought we were last night

before the game Roy Williams was scared as shit at our potential, we just didn't live up to it

that's why he made the comment someone in another thread got confused by--the one about loving college basketball more than anyone else but saying Sidney was more important last night

We proved to them that we can beat them and we could have last night again. At Halftime no one had a damn clue what the outcome of the game would be, including you. We came back out with no head coach and our bench got real tired real quick, not to mention that foul trouble we got into. I was happy with how we played mostly, I say bring on next year. JJ IN THE HOUSE.

before halftime no one knew who was going to win. the first half was a great half of basketball. the team that came out in the second half wasn't the team that played in the first half

and it wasn't because of fatigue

Gavin Grant knows it and Ben McCauley knows it and the rest of the team knows it

You could tell in the first half they wanted to win this game and you could tell that Carolina didn't want to lose this game

After coach left, they couldn't get back into the game the way they did in the first half and i think it's directly related to the disorganization of the team upon Lowe's absence. Towe didn't do a good job of bringing the team together and the team didn't do a good job of being a team.

to the team, it was like someone kidnapped sidney and they weren't even told why and didn't know what what was wrong with him. all they knew was that he wasn't there. you can't play a basketball game when you're trying to figure out what's going on with your coach

Exactly.

It wasn't fatigue (although they probably did get tired later in the 2nd half). We came out having no clue what to do. The offense and defense completely fell apart.

I think it goes to show how much of an impact Sidney has with his playcalling and motivation. He's been a control freak on the sidelines this season.

If the Carolina win told me anything, it's the Sidney Lowe knows how to motivate and inspire the team

The loss told me the exact same thing

But what I think Herb tried to teach his teams was that you shouldn't need to be motivated or inspired to win games--you play basketball, your goal is to win and you do the best you can regardless of who the opponent to win

and that seemed to work for the last 4 seasons and we had better than decent seasons and we got to the tournament

this year we traded all that for a win against carolina and everyone who was complaining about not going far in the tournament don't even care that we've got a snowball's chance in hell at getting into the tournament...

doesn't seem quite right to me

I agree with most of whats been said here, I just think all of us need to stop picking sides and saying herb is better than sidney or sidney is better than herb until after next season...or even after the 09 season. I think Sidney has jack shit to work with this year because he cant play his style of basketball with 5 players, but I also wont give him a pass because he's got to develop his own players. We wont know that for 3 or 4 years.

I think Herb did a good job with what he had, but I think he could have done a better job developing players. We had a lot of good players come through here under herb, but nobody was great. Hodge was the closest we had and even his game had flaws.

We'll see what Sidney can do. I've been saying it all along. I think what people wanted with Sid was something DIFFERENT. Not that we werent good under Herb, but we werent great.

also, although Lowe is kinda playing with Herbs players, and Herb with ASU's previous coaches players...look at how well herb did in his first year there...and then look at sid's first year here. look at our recruiting class for next yr, not to mention the year after. So we traded off two years of NCSU college bball in the NCAA at worst, and only going one maybe two rounds at best, for something that will actually make us contenders.

The only way you could compare how well each respective coach can coach is if the players they both inherited were at the same skill levels. You cannot compare Herb and Sid's first-year performances because each inherited different players of different skill levels. Who's to say Sid would do any better at ASU with whatever leftovers were there? Who's to say how well Herb would do here with this batch of players? The bottom line is you don't know, and you will never know, and it is time for people to stop making these retarded comparisons.

There's no way you can judge Sid at NC State or Herb at ASU just yet.

With Herb, NC State fans pretty much know about what they can expect at ASU, which is a solid (Probably not great) program....Sid...who knows.

All I know is I, personally, like what I see thus far in sid as far as adjustments and making the best with what we've got. We lost our top 4 scorers and all of our players were recruited for a different (Completely different) offense.

We'll see what happens. It's time to get over Herbie. He's gone....a lot of us got what we asked for. Let it go... quit comparing the two

well i know as much to say that sidney inherited better players in a TOUGHER conference

and herb has worse players in a pissy conference... yea some pac 10 teams have higher rankings but if there was a pac-10/acc challenge like the big ten has with us... we'd easily dominate that too, rankings are low cause we beat each other

The ACC is better but the Pac-10 is very, very good this year too. Don't sell that conference short. I watch a lot of their games out here and it's a rough and very tough conference. I'd put the Pac-10 ahead of the SEC at 2nd best this year..

but ^^ is pretty much spot on...

I agree with most of what you've said CH, but saying that Herb would be doing any better than Sidney has with this group is ignorant.

We lost 4 seniors, and two key contributors that should only be JUNIORS this year.

I think our record would be about the same. We may have won one or two more ACC games with Herb, but we would have lost some of those early season games that we barely squeeked out like Wofford and ECU...and we wouldnt have beaten UNC.

This team is not near as good as it was last year. Our starting 5 might be a more suitable ACC lineup, but we're not even close to the level we were last year.

then again...Herb would have his freshman recruits, so depth wouldnt be as big of an issue so this is a moot point anyway.

Basically we traded this season for a shot at the big time in 2 or 3 years. Thats all that happened. Take it for what it is. If we suck 3 years from now then you can tell everyone "I TOLD YOU SO" but until then lets just be pack fans and ride out the storm.

I'm not going to act like I know how'd we do but I'm just saying I started school in '99 and we were shit for 2-3 years before finally making the NCAAs and we never lost to shit schools like them with shitty talent (and Herb coaching).. I think we would've been able to handle our business against them definitely..

Fuck, I always get suckered into these damn "herb arguments" after I've been drinking

Herb's players in Herb's system > Herb's players playing something Sid is transitioning into

that's just the way I see it

Beyond the Carolina win, this season has been sub-par (which everyone will say they expected and accepted)

but it could have been better and i hate to watch things that could be better

Sid will be fine, next year's going to be just as rough though

I'm not arguing with anyone though, I'm just making observations because I agree with all of you but everyone is arguing against nothing.

Yeah, but St. Johns isn't some scrub ass program. I mean they were a Top 10 team in 99 and 00. They ended Duke's crazy home winning streak just 2 years before that and they took Duke down to the wire that same year we got punked by them.

It's not like they are Wofford or ECU here...

but yeah, I'm pretty sold on Lowe and am glad he's here. I just hope that our fans are as patient as they are seeming because I still don't think we are going to be a NCAA team next year. In 2 years, with our experience we should be really, really good though. (I'm talking compete for ACC championship good)..

NyM410...St. Johns HAD a top 10 program in 99...but in 04 they were a year removed from probation and were playing with a bunch of street ballers that they picked up in the offseason.

I got to watch taht game on a digital channel unfortunately. All I heard about was how St. Johns was in such a down year because they lost everything from NCAA violations and these players were thrown together at the last minute just so they could field a team. That 04 team was terrible, and would have struggled to beat ECU or Wofford.
