oh man, a typothat so fits in with all the stories in this thread..

I knew a guy who was trying to fix someone else's computer at work, and he eventually typed in "sudo rm -f /", trying to erase some messed up things.Soon after he did this, question marks started replacing the icons on the desktop, and eventually everything sort of just stopped. This guy figured he'd screwed up, so he looked up the command he'd typed in, and like the first ten responses are all things like "NEVER TRY THIS".Luckily, the computer used TimeMachine, so it was back up and running within the hour, but still. That guy was me, WHOOPS
1/15/2009 3:29:58 PM
^^^ Im tempted to buy that and sue them for false advertising. Id win hands down. Bad thing is its not one type, but plastered all over the page.
1/15/2009 3:34:43 PM
^^If you had no clue what the command was, how'd you even think to type it??
1/15/2009 3:36:16 PM
I was trying to erase everything that had a certain name, and I tried to do something like"sudo rm -rf | grep blahblah".So naive I was.
1/15/2009 3:41:19 PM
wouldn't rm -rf / also erase your time machine backup, if it were mounted?
1/15/2009 4:07:15 PM
Somehow it didn't. Maybe because I stopped the command after things started messing up.

aunt: can you come over and help me get the internet going on the computer i bought your grandpa?me: sure--drive over there--aunt: well here's the bellsouth CD i was using to install the internet but it wouldn't ever finish for some reasonme: [pulls computer out of desk, looks at plugs on back..no network cable, no wireless card] uhh..it's not connected to anything. aunt: well it's connected to the computer in the other room, i know they have internet..why does it need to be connected exactly?palm face #1.aunt: we bought a gig of memory from staples and got them to install for us for [insert ridiculous price here that i don't remember]palm face #2.aunt: it keeps locking up though for some reason. any idea what might be wrong?me: uh, the memory you just put in it maybe.. [takes out new memory, leaves just old stuff behind..computer works fine]half palm faceHmm.. pretty sure I had one more really big palm face moment but I can't remember what it was
1/25/2009 8:56:46 PM
Were you at least able to return the memory to Staples?

At least your grandma knows a few tech terms. Even more impressive that they were even aware of computer memory and attempted the install themselves. Everything that isn't the monitor is the "hard drive" with one side of the family. I get calls where "my hard drive is broken".I don't want to let one set of grandparents anywhere near a computer. I'm sure I'd be on 24/7 tech support with things like "how do I get the clock in the corner to stop blinking".
1/26/2009 11:55:46 AM
well..they actually paid Staples to install the memory. I left out the palm face where they paid someone to do something so f'in easy. I could have easily walked my aunt through it.When we went to Staples to exchange it they said they'd credit us a free memory install anytime we needed it.. lol
1/26/2009 12:00:47 PM
How much did they charge to install the memory?
1/26/2009 4:10:53 PM
^Too much, I'm sure.

Got on a call with one of my engineers who had a very difficult customer.Their problem description was that "the network is slow" and therefore the switch must be sending and receiving packets slowly.BobbyDigital: Saying the network is slow is a bit anecdotal, we really need to...Customer: (angrily) WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT'S ANECDOTAL? THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM. I DON'T APPRECIATE YOU BELITTLING THIS ISSUE.BobbyDigital: facepalmBobbyDigital: Sir, I'm not belittling your problem, and I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but I don't think your understanding of the word 'anecdotal' is correct. So, Then i go into a lesson on the definitions and difference between anecdotal and empirical evidence, and why technical problems cannot be solved by using 'data' such as "The network is slow." It's one thing if i'm dealing with my parents, but this guy is a Senior Network Architect (at least per his signature), and can't troubleshoot his way out of a paper bag. Oh, and the same guy refused to work with the first support engineer (who was an outsourcer), because of the accent and poor english. I should have somehow worked it into the conversation that I'm indian. fucker.
2/9/2009 2:21:36 PM
That's a great idea! I'm calling the TAC right now- they'll help me fix our problems
2/9/2009 2:23:28 PM
Listen.we have a special cdubya call routing rule that sends you straight to the least technical outsourcer in bulgaria that can be found.

I'd recommend a backup generator for that purpose. Not too many UPS's are designed to keep an entire network of servers, switches, pc's and other equipment going, even for a few minutes. A generator would be more cost effective than putting high end UPS's at every workstation and for all the other equipment.
2/10/2009 12:21:13 PM
^ yeah for as much juice as a dr's office draws you will need a full generator

My mom wants to come watch Australia (on DVD) because my fiance has an HD tv.
2/24/2009 12:01:20 PM
^well i understand the premise, but DVD's do appear better on HDTV's than standard interlaced TV's... if you have an upscaling DVD player
2/24/2009 5:50:54 PM
I don't find that technically inept. I do, however, find the watching of Australia to indicate very poor taste in movies.
2/24/2009 6:24:25 PM
2/24/2009 8:31:58 PM
^^^Except she knows this. I've explained it before. It's one thing to say "I want to watch a movie on your fiance's TV because it's big", and another to say "I want to watch a movie on your fiance's TV because it's HD"This is the same woman who crops pictures from a 1.3mp camera in half, has them printed at 8x10 (or larger, sometimes), and fusses about them being grainy. And refuses to learn how to add contacts to her cell phone
2/24/2009 9:02:35 PM
I wrote an app for my phone to be able to search and delete files off the memory card. It's called DeleteSD. You have to click a button labeled delete. It's posted on the google market place now. Someone did this and then posted in the comments of the app:I CLICKED DELETE AND ALL MY FILES ARE GONE. I JUST UNINSTALLED IT AND THEY ARE STILL GONE. IT"S A DOODOO APP!!!!

I am debugging a laptop for a co-worker. We work for a software development firm... She had no anti-spyware, antivirus, or firewall. I have already deleted close to 2000 files if not more that were downloaded to a temp file... Many of them were set to boot on startup, so I have to clean that too.. uggg
3/11/2009 1:47:19 PM
I still don't understand how people do that shit..
3/11/2009 1:55:02 PM
yeah I'm very close to saying sc#@w it, and just making them reload the entire OS... They should really have known better. And I'm pretty sure I gave them a list of programs they could use when they first got the thing.
