So apparently it's a known issue and the issue is more with the signal strength indicator just inaccurately displaying the signal strength than actual poor signal, Apple is supposedly fixing it with an update.
6/23/2010 5:00:59 PM
Seems that a lot of the phone released lately are having issues with the signal bars displaying incorrectly.
6/23/2010 5:03:49 PM
Anyone going to southpoint to wait in line ...?If so, what time?
6/23/2010 5:07:44 PM
haha my friend trying to activate his new iPhone:
6/23/2010 5:35:11 PM
^ Tell him to turn it off and turn it back on. Same shit happened to me. I guess turning it off and on again causes it to re-provision.Oh, and yeah, i gots mine. It's the tits.[Edited on June 23, 2010 at 6:01 PM. Reason : srsly]
6/23/2010 5:59:51 PM
and I just found the first issue with mine.... there's a yellowed spot on the display down in the bottom left corner. obviously gonna have to wait a bit before I can trade it in. lame.
6/23/2010 6:30:12 PM
This shit is ridiculously fast

6/23/2010 8:22:35 PM
There are TONS of people reporting the yellow spots. There's a poll on Engadget and over half the people that have reported it that have iPhones say they see the yellow spots. I wonder what the reply from Apple will be. Could cost them millions to replace them all. Could cost them millions of potential future customers if they don't.
6/23/2010 8:26:05 PM
This is why I don't pre-order. I can wait a month while they work out bugs than have to deal with this kind of crap.

the signal issues with the new antenna band are the biggest fail to me - i agree that they probably knew this was an issue hence are selling those "bumper" cases first hand (until now they only sold 3rd party accessories for their iphones right?)
6/23/2010 8:52:45 PM
I was worried that the 3gs was going to be seriously slow with the multitasking and other features.Instead I haven't noticed any real loss of speed in starting and stopping apps. It's been kinda surprising. Plus it's been nice going from 6-7 app pages down to 2.Yeah, I'm about 2 days late on this, but I hadn't been able to upgrade to iOS4 until last night.
6/23/2010 9:07:33 PM
^ sorry I am confused. What do you mean "going from 6-7 app pages down to 2"?Guess I'm missing out on something with iOS4.meh. either way, as soon as I get some time this weekend, I"m jumping back into finding a solution for the error 1015 problem. Everything I found/tried online last night didn't do shiznit for me.
6/23/2010 9:11:49 PM
Folders, so instead of having pages for games, travel, entertainment, utilities, etc. I've got them in folders on the first and second pages with a few apps not in folders.
6/23/2010 9:18:20 PM
oh, snap. I forgot about that.Haven't worked with that yet
6/23/2010 9:20:39 PM
It's easy, just drag one app on top of another and the phone will make the folder for you.It even names it, but you can rename it right then or just by making the apps in the folder go squiggly later.

^^Between that and a high percentage for a yellowed splotch on the screen. Ouch. Good game, Apple.[Edited on June 23, 2010 at 10:15 PM. Reason : .]

^^ From the Gizmodo link
6/23/2010 10:17:36 PM
i bet they didn't forsee that conductive antenna band thing since all their field units were encased in plastic...and the yellow screen discoloration issue - didnt that plague the 27" imacs as well?
6/23/2010 10:33:43 PM
This isn't really as great as I'd hoped. Took just 4 drops to shatter the screen. I mean, I guess it's still glass and all, but I was hoping it would hold up a little better than this.
6/23/2010 10:55:09 PM
I can repeat the antenna problem over and over as many times as I want to, I think it might've been the main cause of some the signal problems I was having early I just didn't connect the dots. It occurs if you connect the antenna with the bottom of the phone on the lower left. It doesn't always totally kill the signal but it definitely hurts it. I go from 3 or 4 bars to two bars, one bar, or no service, every single time. I hope this is fixable with software but I don't see how it could be outside of just artificially increasing the signal strength being displayed.
6/23/2010 11:04:46 PM
^^ wow not as durable as I expected. again, I would think Apple would perform these kinds of tests and know the real-life durability of their product before they go around claiming their shit is unbreakable
6/23/2010 11:29:19 PM
I made a video of what happens to my signal strength when I hold the phone. You can see it gradually drops over a 10-15 sec period and in this case drops to 1 bar although sometimes it drops all the way to no service, and sometimes it drops much more rapidly than it does in the video but, without fail, it drops to one bar or no service when I hold it left handed. There are a lot of videos like this already out there showing the same thing but my point is that this isn't a case of a few isolated incidents.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zWqNwr3zC0

loooooooololol southpointapparently people started lining up at 5ish... over 100 people in line so far.
6/24/2010 1:11:18 AM
waaaaay ^^^^^ up there..thanks... after posting, I did a Google search and found out about folders. d'oh! I am glad to have that feature, because it got annoying swiping past pages for different topics to get where I wanted to go. I'd say that's about the only feature I like. Well, photos seem to take faster. But I'm still jonesin' for my restore to 3.1.2 will work on it soon
6/24/2010 3:38:44 AM
At southpark in Charlotte. Haha i feel like a tool.
6/24/2010 6:11:48 AM
who really cares if it drops signal and prevents the user from communicating? Depends on your needs...you can read books and multitask appz!!
6/24/2010 7:49:32 AM
I left the apple store around 8:20, after receiving my "ticket" from the non-reserved line...The reserved line was over 100 people long (yes, I counted) and was not moving at all.The non-reserved line will not move until the reserved line is empty ... which at that rate would have been another 2 hours probably.Just glad I wont be out there til 2pm in the hot sun waiting ... I think I will head over around 330 to jump in the reserved line, and then try to use my ticket to get a second phone via that line.
6/24/2010 9:06:02 AM
yeah i've got one reserved at crabtree and i think i am gonna give it a few more hours before i head over there . . . luckily the line is indoors there

What I want to know is how the review phones they gave out didn't have the signal problem. Presumably some manufacturing issue? Maybe there's supposed to be some light coating on the antenna?
6/24/2010 10:22:02 AM
It's absolutely a manufacturing issue. Anyone who thinks this is an actual design flaw is crazy. Apple isn't exactly new to this phone thing, they aren't going to release one with an antenna that doesn't work when you HOLD IT IN YOUR HAND. At worst it's a bad batch of phones, and it may even fixable with a software update.
6/24/2010 10:32:46 AM
http://www.dailytech.com/UPDATE+2+iPhone+4+Customers+Reporting+Yellowish+Displays+Reception+Issues+When+Holding+Phone/article18828.htmYellowish display will go away.As for the antenna, not so sure it's an easy fix, in the article above they suggest the 'bumper' case as to keep your hand from interfering with the antenna.
6/24/2010 10:45:51 AM
6/24/2010 11:12:05 AM
My phone has the antenna issue. Goes from full bars to nothing. Really sucks. I'll be goddamned if I have to pay $30 for a bumper to fix their problem. I'll return the phone.

6/24/2010 11:27:36 AM
6/24/2010 11:52:55 AM
who actually holds the phone with it buried in their palm like that though?
6/24/2010 11:55:41 AM
I've noticed the issue...but it's really not that bad right now. I know the bumper will take care of it, but I'm sure someone will come out with something thin to put over the antenna to fix it as well. As it is right now, I've had no real issues...just don't bury it in your palm. I've had a couple people tell me the call quality is a lot better when I talk to them on it and haven't had a dropped call even when holding in my left hand.
6/24/2010 12:00:55 PM
6/24/2010 12:03:08 PM
BTW. The sync time is dramatically faster than the 3g. I also think it is a lot faster than 3GS. I was able to sync probably 7 or 8 gigs of stuff in under 10 minutes.
6/24/2010 12:32:02 PM
Yeah reception goes to "searching" when i hold the phone in my hand. This really sucks. Anyway:http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/06/24/1521948/long-lines-for-new-iphones-062410.htmlPhoto number 2. Me in the white shirt facing the other direction with my hand behind my head. haha.-Ok this is a major fucking design flaw. Almost any way i hold the phone to talk i cover up the bottom left side and the reception goes to either 1 bar or searching. WTF. How'd they fuck this up. [Edited on June 24, 2010 at 12:37 PM.
