He didn't leave because fans were mad at his jumpshot.

I thought Washington shooting the ball was great. What WASN'T great was when he got the ball in the post and decided to throw up a wild shot, despite being double and triple teamed -- and despite having open teammates all around him. It was almost a joke how much of a black hole he was.His defense wasn't great, but it wasn't for lack of hustle. I just don't think he has a high bball IQ and was constantly out of position.
11/22/2016 10:39:11 AM
I liked him as a player, but not only was he a blackhole, his favorite shot was the least efficient shot in basketball--the long 2. Although I am not sure why he is even being discussed now since he has been gone for two years. He screwed us over last year, but I am not sure we miss him much this year. With Kapita, Yurt and Mav we don't really have room for another big man.
11/22/2016 10:57:13 AM
Washington was probably the player that I was most upset about leaving during the Gott tenure. With that being said, he did leave because his minutes went down significantly and it looked like he was going to be 4th on the big man depth chart. Our team also greatly improved that year as his minutes went down. So it made sense.I just thought he had the best offensive talent of all of our big men and if he just worked on his D and rebounding (actually thought he was a good at both...just didn't really put forth the effort) and improved his shot selection (aka, didn't shoot every time he got the ball), then he would have moved back up in the rotation. And him doing well at Cincy doesn't say anything bad about Gott. We have a great front-line without him and of course he was going to improve over the last two years. I'd call it a wash.

^^ Don't forget about Hicks too
11/22/2016 11:06:44 AM
Well yeah, and abu and anya. I was talking about the guys who have been gone thus far and will be coming back.
11/22/2016 11:19:31 AM
for a program that prides itself on offense, we sure as hell dont run any offense

i mean if you started the coaching search thread tonight, id contribute, but i would never call for such a thing until March at least

11/29/2016 10:56:20 PM
No ball control, rebounding, or defensive intensity at all. We look like a fucking NIT team with all this talent. Unreal.
11/29/2016 10:56:53 PM
^^fuck you and your joy in us sucking you pile of garbageThis is gonna make me puke in my mouth a little but i wish gott had the balls to pull a roy and put in the walk ons to shame the starters
11/29/2016 10:58:59 PM
with these types of results with this much talent, this is the year Gott's exposed. We will never have this much talent for years. Fire him for someone who knows a hint of defense might help us win games.
11/29/2016 11:00:25 PM
theres different stages. i just went through the puking stage a few years ahead of you. i know your pain and am stronger because of it. shit like this doesnt phase me. i knew it was coming.
11/29/2016 11:01:56 PM
hes donewe all knew this was coming which makes it that much worsethe only thing in question now is if he doeren's his way into doing just enough stick around until archie takes another job and we're fucked for eternity

With our terrible out of conference schedule, and losing to the only two decent teams already, looks like a classic Gott year of sweating it out until the end and maybe having to win some acc tournament games. If he doesn't at least make the tourney with this talent, and smith jr. leaves, who knows what will happen.
11/29/2016 11:08:08 PM
we are going to have to win 11 or 12 acc games to make the tourney, at least
11/29/2016 11:11:28 PM
here's the realitylsu kept their terrible basketball coach because they dont care about the sport and needed the money to fire les mileswe kept our terrible football coach because it's impossible for us to ever be good at football. but we're cheap so it's not like the funds will be reallocated towards the only sport we have a chance in(actually im wrong, we did allocate about 30 mil towards volleyball and cheerleading)[Edited on November 29, 2016 at 11:11 PM. Reason : oh and wrestling]
What concerned me more than the defense was the attitude of the team. Team lacked energy from the start, turned the ball over too many times, and was playing fragmented on offense. Hope Gott get these boys in check by ACC.
11/29/2016 11:13:55 PM
AFAI concerned, any expectations for this season are officially off the table.[Edited on November 29, 2016 at 11:15 PM. Reason : ]

FUCK 2016 man
11/29/2016 11:30:29 PM
We need an assistant that can coach D. Kind of like a ghostwriter is to authors and musicians and shit. Gott is the recruiting figurehead but somebody else runs the actual system.
11/30/2016 12:24:55 AM
this guy sucks
11/30/2016 7:11:57 AM
I understand and completely agree with everyone's frustration with the level of defense the team is playing right now. But I think everyone needs to take a deep breath. It is still very early in the season, and Gott has shown that he can coach teams with less talent to an NCAA bid. Even though early results are not very positive, perhaps it would be best to see how things progress in conference play, which is where we would need to make the NCAA anyway (it want going to be with our OOC schedule).
11/30/2016 12:00:04 PM
If looking for the positives it is that Gott's teams have improved as the season progresses and this group in particular has a high ceiling simply based on the number of freshmen and Dorn/Henderson having not played for a year. Would be more worrisome with a lineup of all juniors and seniors. There is depth and potential, but improvement needs to start quick, as we really haven't looked good all season and minimal improvement over these first few games.
11/30/2016 12:04:56 PM
I just hate having to watch our poorly coached teams. They never look organized. No positivity, no energy. Gott brings in talent and just lets them gel by season's end,,, and that's been enough to have chances in the ACC and NCAA tourney. But damn if watching them isn't so frustrating. Mav and Yurt need to save the day. And Gott is good to stay. Results have spoken for that. But these slow death games are painful to watch.
11/30/2016 12:06:07 PM
We are currently trying to work in 5 guys that have never played together before.Maverick is going to return and Yurt7 has yet to play. The last couple of games have sucked but I'm still optimistic about this season.

1) We dont have a bad loss yet.2) There will be plenty of opportunities to get good wins in conference.
11/30/2016 1:23:16 PM
A bad loss? Did you miss last night? They lost at home to Winthrop. WVU beat them by 32. They won't finish the season in the top 100. We were supposed to win.
11/30/2016 1:47:57 PM
still like Gottfried if only for the recruiting gravy train he always seems to bring in, but I wouldn't be mad if we somehow picked up Archie Miller instead, either.
11/30/2016 2:15:40 PM
it's early to know "bad losses" because things can change. but illinois is in the 80s in kenpom...and was 94 last week. as of now that's looking like a potential bad loss
11/30/2016 2:28:43 PM
PESSIMISTIC SIDE OF ME SAYS:-Gottfried just can't/won't coach defense. Our schemes appear to be garbage and players are usually clueless. Maybe Lutz did more than we thought? -Even when we play good defense, we can't rebound because of fundamentals suck.-We seem to lack of leadership. Anya? Henderson? Abu? None are leaders ... or at least, worthy leaders. -Dennis Smith pounding the basketball ... and pounding the basketball ... and pounding the basketball ... and then firing up a long two. OPTIMISTIC SIDE SAYS-The defense will get better with time. (Honestly, it can't get worse.) These guys are young and haven't played together much. Lack of communication off helps/switches is what's killing us -- not athletic ability. -Terry Henderson will usually shoot better than 1-7 from deep. He had several rattle in and out. Maverick will give us some more firepower (hopefully off the bench)-FT shooting seems much improved this year (minus Anya). Abu's shot looks really, really good too.-Kapita looks legit. Great effort, great touch, and surprisingly good awareness out there. Richard Howell part II in the making? -Yurt will give us a playmaking big, which is something we desperately need. Plus more Yurt and Kapita means less Anya.

Illinois blows and no excuse for the loss, but I think this will turn out to be a good season. We have a star PG but dammit the kid needs support from the bigs. Anya and Abu can't freaking set screens correctly! When he drives he gets doubled sometimes tripled team without no supporting help. All he can do is kick it out to a guard or try and force something. If he pass it to a big it seems like they have butter fingers and can't catch the ball. Kapita who's just a freshman shows more BB IQ than Anya and Abu combined, but I will give credit to Abu for developing a nice jump shot. I will be glad once Yurt comes as I still believe him and DSJ will be one of the best 1-2 punches in ACC. By the way Henderson defense is abysmal, I thought West Virginia play tough defense?
11/30/2016 4:38:10 PM
Illinois is 153 currently by RealTimeRPI but yes it is very early^Maybe that's why he left
