4/24/2012 11:36:35 AM
wondering if this is a good deal...
4/25/2012 12:54:13 AM
I'm finally on the Android bandwagon! Was able to upgrade while staying on a SERO plan so I've gone from a 3 year old Windows Mobile 6.5 phone (HTC Touch Pro 2) to a Motorola Photon running Android 2.3. Very happy with it so far.
4/25/2012 1:32:53 AM
^Just give it a few months.
4/25/2012 4:03:05 AM
give what a few months?Android is great. I've given it a couple years and I absolutely love it.Now, I wouldn't touch a Photon on 2.3, though some people making the switch from dumb to smartphones likely won't care/know the difference (for now).[Edited on April 25, 2012 at 8:21 AM. Reason : .]

4/25/2012 9:55:22 AM
^^Educate me on why this was a poor choice please. I went with it based on a few hours of research as I finally got fed up with the bugginess of my old phone and found out I could keep sero somewhat out of the blue. Not coming from a "dumb" phone but from a 3 year old winmo 6.5 device.^^^A few months before what? I start regretting not going with Windows Phone 7, I presume?[Edited on April 25, 2012 at 9:59 AM. 4/25/2012 9:56:03 AM
Well, it's a different phone than I thought it was Maybe it was a good one on Sprint; though, it seems like the photon was just one of those phones that was just pushed into stores (as opposed to popular/power devices such as the Droid/2/3/4/x/Razr/Maxxxx/Bionic or Galaxy Nexus). Maybe I just didn't hear about it since it's Sprint. I normally follow up on the top tier VZW releases, late enough for the phone to still be relatively new, but lower in price.
4/25/2012 10:52:04 AM
A few months for the absolute shithole that is Android 2.3 to start rearing its ugly head. And no, I'm not saying Android is bad. But from personal experience of a year of using an Evo 4G and multiple Android tablets, I can tell you that Android 2.2 and 2.3 will make you absolutely hate the platform. My fiancee finally refused to use the Evo anymore and demanded to go back to an iPhone. All these new 4.0 phones are much, much better. At least they're more reliable and capable.
4/25/2012 11:49:59 AM
wat. I'm still on GB and have no problems.
4/25/2012 12:12:06 PM
As far as the phone itself, the Photon is basically Sprint's version of the Atrix 4G, but with a better camera and 2.3 vs. 2.2. I still think it was the best choice for me--they have a grand total of one phone running ICS, the Galaxy Nexus, and while it *technically* offers 4G LTE Sprint hasn't established LTE coverage in many markets yet, this one included, so the 4G would be useless. 4G Wimax may be on the way out but at least it exists and I'll be off contract well before it dies in 2015. The Photon seems to compare favorably to most of their other offerings (Evo 3D, Design, Epic 4G), with the only strong competition seeming to come from the Galaxy SII. While the Galaxy may be a better phone overall, it would have cost me $200 and I got the Photon for $50 thanks to a trade-in deal. The Galaxy is not $150 worth of nicer. There is a new model of the Evo coming in May, but it will likely be LTE and will likely be $200.Android 2.2 is buggy as hell on my fiancee's Optimus V, I'll give you that. But with sprint only offering one model with 4.0 it's not like I had a whole lot of choice. Was going to stay with Sprint (cheap unlimited data on SERO), didn't want an iPhone, and their Windows Phone 7 selection sucks plus I don't really dig the tiles interface.

Photon is supposed to be on the list for ICS in Q3 of this year. And while the Galaxy Nexus is indeed newer and more capable, who the hell knows when Sprint will roll out LTE in smaller markets like ours. Not anytime soon, likely.(The Galaxy I was referring to not being $150 nicer was the S II, not the Nexus, btw. It's been around for about as long as the Photon and has very similar specs save for a slightly nicer and larger screen)If you're talking about the quad-core Tegra 3, that currently does not support LTE and that will not be resolved until late this year, if not 2013. HTC One XL switched to a dual-core Snapdragon in the North American market due to that problem.[Edited on April 25, 2012 at 5:01 PM. Reason : s]
4/25/2012 4:50:28 PM
The quandary you just went through is the same reason I am probably going to be leaving Sprint when my contract expires.Unless you're an iPhone user, the rest of their phone selection is terrible. They have a few decent flagship models (Nexus, iPhone), but everything else is just so awful it's sad (my HTC Arrive included. Love the OS, the phone is garbage).
4/25/2012 6:06:03 PM
ugh my battery life is shit now.the "media" process constantly keeps the phone awake and using data. I know when it's happening because the phone will get HOT in my pocket. and if I don't kill the running process AND the cached process it will drain the battery in under 8 hours.suggestions?[Edited on April 26, 2012 at 11:18 AM. I wish Sprint would get a phone comparable to the Droid 4

slight crack on my atrix screen today from a drop oh well, still is completely function but pretty much seals that I'll be upgrading to the htc one X in a couple weeks.

This makes it so hard to remain loyal Sprint... Taken on my fireplace mantle. Network Vision had better be a homerun dammit. Then again, I heard after 10 years you're allowed to activate Derrick Zoolander's phone.[Edited on April 27, 2012 at 2:10 AM. Reason : ]

thinking about rooting my driod x. What are the advantages/disadvantages of doing so?
4/27/2012 4:48:18 PM
^I'm pretty sure you have to flash back to a previous OS version to root... at least that's what I've read because I tried rooting my DX and it failed everytime.
4/27/2012 5:14:20 PM
Does anyone here have the droid razr? I'm thinking of getting one tomorrow but I'm a little afraid of the battery life. I know they made the maxx to fix that but the regular one is a good price now.
4/28/2012 9:22:17 PM
my wife and I have one each. i'm used to just charging it nightly at this point. it's at 59% now after moderate use today, probably took it off the charger about 12 hours ago.
4/28/2012 9:26:34 PM
you can get 16 hours of moderate usage out of most any smartphone...plug it in when you go to bed and unplug it 8 hours later when you wake upif you're surfing the web via 4G all day, perhaps not
4/28/2012 9:58:31 PM
Is not having to charge the device nightly normal? Granted I've been dealing with an older model phone for ages before last week's upgrade, but it's just force of habit to me to plug in the charger before I go to bed. Doesn't seem too much to ask.

I've been beta testing this app for a friend that uses your calendar to either silence or lower your ringer. It has whitelists etc. and seems to work pretty well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.misswiggles.ringerfu
4/29/2012 3:22:49 AM
That sounds great, ive always charged my phone nightly. I guess I'll go for it. Thanks

so I'll be buying the HTC one X next week. anyone joining me?
4/29/2012 4:40:36 PM
Does anyone with the Droid Razr have an issue where pictures will work one minute, then it will scramble them or add gray bars into them? This has been happening with my girlfriend's phone way too much recently.
4/29/2012 7:16:02 PM
^ doesn't happen to me. Is she using the default camera and media app or something else?
4/29/2012 8:25:23 PM
i've had camera issues like that on my Droid2 occasionally, but it seems that using the physical camera button instead of the touchscreen 'button' helps, as well as helping the focus
4/29/2012 9:07:24 PM
Ran into another issue with my Nexus this weekend. Apparently the phone will try to send MMS texts over wi-fi if wi-fi is enabled and connected. Was trying to send a picture and it just sat at "sending" for more than 3 hours. Deleted the message and tried again, but this time I watched it an noticed the data indicators for wi-fi were activated, not the indicators for 4g (I had 2-3 bars). Found some posts on the verizon forum and it seems that several other people were seeing the problem. Turned wi-fi off and the two test pictures I sent went through without any issue. Anyone else run into this and have a more permanent solution than turning off wi-fi whenever I want to sent a picture? The posts I found before just seemed to stop there, though some people seemed to not have the issue after having the sim card replaced.
4/30/2012 10:19:54 AM
On the Thunderbolt, it temporarily disables wifi and enables 3G/4G when sending an mms. Wonder if it's just an ICS/Nexus bug.

Damn, is 4.8 inches becoming the norm for Android phones now? I hope they're reducing bezel size as I don't think I could do anything physically larger than my Atrix (which has only a 4.0" display)[Edited on May 3, 2012 at 10:47 AM. Reason : ]
5/3/2012 10:43:54 AM
4.8" sounds pretty large to me...my thunderbolt's only 4.3" and while i don't think i'd want a smaller screen, i don't know that i want a larger one, either
5/3/2012 11:15:33 AM
My GNex is 4.65. I could go for another .15", but probably not too much more than that.
5/3/2012 11:51:42 AM
And apple lawsuit coming in 3...2..]
5/3/2012 3:06:49 PM
finally found the source of my excessive data usage... apparently my phone is trying to download and verify the 4.0.4 ota update and when the verification fails, it redownloads the entire update (136.9mb) again and again.....tonight i guess i'll back up and try going to 4.0.4 and see if that resolves it ]
5/3/2012 3:37:54 PM
I kind of like the HTC One X better than the GS3.
5/3/2012 11:26:48 PM
the problem i have with sprint (and why ill be getting away from them with my next phone) is that sure they have unlimited data.....but you have to suck it though a fucking straw.4g on my phone is worthless, little coverage unless I'm sitting in one of their stores.Ive been paying 10bux a month for their 4g rollout that never happenedSure it may be unlimited, but thats like saying you have unlimited money, but you can only spend it at the rate of 10 dollars per hour, sure thats 87k a year, but you do have to sleep dont you?
5/3/2012 11:55:56 PM
Oddly enough, I have good 4G signal both at home and at work. Maybe I'm just lucky though.4.85" does sound rather large. I'm quite happy with the 4.3" on my Photon, anything larger seems like it would be unnecessarily bulky in a pocket. Hell, the absurdly huge display on the Galaxy Note is only 5.3".

Just got my Sprint Galaxy Nexus. For some reason it does not charge right. When its plugged in I can see the thunderbolt icon on the battery, when the screen is locked it says charging but when I see the battery meter in settings it shows discharging. It charges extremely slow and discharges if I use it when its on AC power. I am going to just exchange it for a new one.

want a new phone so badly but I don't feel like dropping $$ now and I still haven't made my mind up.. Razr/Maxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, Galaxy Nexus, or S3
