get a garand sling and learn to use itworks on the AR-15 as well
7/13/2012 10:08:50 PM
Building a new AR for my dad, instead of buying a low profile gas block I figured I would try to shave down the front sight post since the upper came with one and I like the idea of having the gas block pinned to the barrel. Will post some pics when I am done but it is a lot easier than I thought it would be and seems like it will work really well.

http://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-riflescopes-vpr-m-05fp.htmli found one of these NIB never mounted on CSC for $260 shipped. i think it'll be awesome on the .22-250.now what to do with one of these?: http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-vx3-45-14x50mm-long-range-rifle-scope.html

Is the second one what you already have? Sell it. Scopes that adjust in 1/4" MOA with a duplex reticle are less than useful; I can't tell by the picture if you can slip scales on the turret either.
7/15/2012 9:51:20 PM
yes, it's the one i already have. i have found that model to be quite useful, as have a lot of hunters.i asked about mil-dot scopes once and you said they wouldn't do anything for me, so what reticle to you suggest?
7/15/2012 9:57:40 PM
Well, if you took time to learn how to use a mil reticle you could conceivably set up stakes or something on your hunting lanes and judge distance; it's really not rocket science. A good tactical milling reticle on a scope with a bullet drop compensator would have you slaying animals from a long way off. However one of the most exciting things I've seen on the civilian side is the ballistically matched reticles, usually with custom turret caps for the ammo you are shooting. I think those will overtake the marketplace eventually in terms of long range hunting scopes. Also since you shoot reloads most scope companies' custom shops will drum up the turrets for you based on your gathered data[Edited on July 15, 2012 at 10:13 PM. Reason : reloads]

^ if you wanna try mine out I use mil lines with .1 mil adjustment. Let me know if you wanna get together and can get a few hundred yards. I can bring my steel to!
7/15/2012 10:14:32 PM
to clarify I'm talking about BDC turrets, not BDC reticles, unless you're going to get a Horus

I've got some catching up to do with this thread but I'm just coming here to shoot down all the flack generated for buying a pistol-grip 12ga. I've put a lot of shells through it since I bought it and I find it accurate and controllable from the hip or center-of-mass, both from a cold-fired first shot and from follow-ups. And it's more comfortable than shoulder-firing, imo. Granted I'm a big guy and I'm not hunting or skeet shooting but within 30ft, longer than most open spaces in my house, I see no reason to shoulder up.

im going to throw this out there, regardless of sumfoo's recent 308 search (im not looking for semiauto).i am however looking for suggestions in a 308 bolt gun with a barrel length of 20 inches. maybe even a 223? a savage im looking at is also chambered in that (i might want to shoot it more than i currently think).preferably a heavy barrel? obviously a police/tactical type. mainly concerned with 100 or 200 yard shots.not looking to spend over 1000, although some of the high end savages look nice, and im also not seeing great reviews for kimbers line.remingtons quality control seems to be all over the place. besides the xmark trigger supposedly not adjusting as low as they say it will go, it seems pretty common that the scope tap holes arent centered and always require a lot of left adjust in the scope.wtf?so anyway, suggestions? researching savage precision carbine atm..[Edited on July 16, 2012 at 11:24 PM. Any opinions on dvor.com?
7/16/2012 11:14:23 PM
^^ always been a fan of the savage police models, you can get a nice one for under 1k if I remember correctly
7/16/2012 11:17:52 PM
Are you just punching paper around 200 yds? Go .223 it'll be easier on the wallet and a lot more gentle to shoot; most shooters don't practice proper recoil management. .308 isn't really a long-range round, it's just what we wound up with. Sounds like for your application, .223 will work just fine. You can still get some fairly hot rounds out to 600m

If I was Mark Binker, the WRAL reported in question, I might ask the GRNC people to introduce me at future speaking engagements. They put together a pretty good biographical sketch. It seems five permit holders are listed for my street. In another month, it will be six.

im not gonna lie, i dont have nearly the skill level or ability to even barely use a custom built gun.also, just out of curiosity...how is DPMS' reputation when it comes to ARs? the internet is a fickle mistress when it comes to various AR brands it seems.love it or hate it.[Edited on July 17, 2012 at 10:18 PM. 7/19/2012 4:02:00 PM
NRR, how are the sights on your RIA 1911? I need some more trigger time with mine but I feel like the sights aren't lined up quite right
7/19/2012 4:10:36 PM
^^ Eds Gun Shop in Vass had one a couple days ago. If your interested I would call ahead and make sure it's not gone now though.
7/19/2012 5:04:01 PM
I wouldn't buy a dpms AR15 when there are plenty of other brands out there with better reputations for basically the same price. You an build a BCM rifle pretty cheap and they have a great rep.
7/19/2012 5:24:26 PM
^^Shoot it from a rest. Handgun sights are rarely off; it's typically...ahem..operator error. I'm not saying that to demean you, but try it from a rest.

Anyone have an M&P22? I hear good things
7/19/2012 8:02:07 PM
Pistol? I wanted one because I have a M&P 9 but it felt like an airsoft gun in the store. I got a Ruger SR-22 and have put close to 2000 rounds through it with no failures. I love it and it was cheaper.
7/19/2012 8:15:12 PM
it probably is "operator error" ... I need to just shoot it some more and get accustomed to it. I got the full size tactical (in 9mm), but my sights are not adjustable, they're just plain front and rear dovetailed blade/notch.i will have more time next week to experiment
7/19/2012 8:43:50 PM
the dovetailed sights aren't adjustable for windage? i figured you'd just drift one over a little.i have a hard time seeing my sights. all the black runs together. i guess i need to put some with a white front post and some white dots on the rear on there. i don't think the RIA dovetails are the same dimensions as standard novaks.[Edited on July 19, 2012 at 8:49 PM. what would you guys do if federal agents came to your door demanding all semi-auto weapons?maybe they offer compensation maybe not?http://www.infowars.com/soros-promotes-un-control-over-gun-ownership/http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrybell/2011/06/07/u-n-agreement-should-have-all-gun-owners-up-in-arms/i dont know if you guys read these last time i posted them, and the premise seems laughable, but that theater shooting made me thing of this immediately.what would happen nationally if the government tried to confiscate these weapons by force?sorry in advance if this is a "waste of time" scenario/exercise, but i personally imagine something resembling a civil war.
7/20/2012 8:34:26 PM
I would demand my bear armsI'm all for the government taking guns away from anyone with mental health issues but the intent of the second amendment was to allow the governed the same ability to weapons that the govenours have. The intent was that if the legislative bodies were afraid of the people they would be fair with the laws they pass.[Edited on July 20, 2012 at 8:48 PM. Reason : .][Edited on July 20, 2012 at 8:50 PM. I'd be interested in knowing what kind of body armor this dude had on. It made me start rethinking my EDC gun (.380/15 rounds) vs. what I had been carrying (.40S&W/25 rounds). Now, I know that most body armor wouldn't stop either round and you would have to recognize the necessity of a head shot in that instance. but it just got my mind going.[Edited on July 21, 2012 at 1:22 AM. 7/21/2012 1:21:48 AM
My EDC is a LCP .380 with the Hornady max defense stuff. This is making me a bit more concerned that I need to go a bit bigger. That XDS .45 might just be the ticket. I need to lose a few more lbs for winter so I can pack it properly.
7/21/2012 8:56:47 AM
The key is to carry as big as you can comfortably (granted you can be accurate with whatever it is). I know in my case if it isn't comfortable I probably won't carry it and if I don't carry my CC piece it does me no good. If I need more than 7 rounds of some hot 9mm self defense rounds then I will just chalk that one up to fate.
