Yea that no go claim is a key right wing conspiracy theory. Works for Muslim areas as well "Christians aren't allowed there!!!"

I'm still trying to figure out TT's actual point. I think his main point is that it's hypocritical for people to get overly upset or loudly call for gun control after a mass shooting, if they're not also overly upset or loudly calling for gun control everyday/all-day, since it's happening in inner cities all the time? Is that it?

If anyone thinks the definition of mass shooting isn't at least somewhat misleading, you probably don't realize that news outlets are for-profit businesses.

You shoudl be glad mass shooting its defined that way bc it doesn't focus on these other "mass shootings" only

I think this is the group that makes the current definition that is used in many stats passed around:
https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting
Quote :
"Why are GVA Mass Shooting numbers higher than some other sources?

GVA uses a purely statistical threshold to define mass shooting based ONLY on the numeric value of 4 or more shot or killed, not including the shooter. GVA does not parse the definition to remove any subcategory of shooting. To that end we don’t exclude, set apart, caveat, or differentiate victims based upon the circumstances in which they were shot.
GVA believes that equal importance is given to the counting of those injured as well as killed in a mass shooting incident.

The FBI does not define Mass Shooting in any form. They do define Mass Killing but that includes all forms of weapon, not just guns.

In that, the criteria are simple…if four or more people are shot or killed in a single incident, not involving the shooter, that incident is categorized as a mass shooting based purely on that numerical threshold."

Pretty sure neither fbi nor news outlets are defining mass shootings, at least not the definition that TT has been using.

It's pretty simple really. You'll hear something on the news like "there has been an average of one mass shooting per day this year." Many people will think of those mass shootings as "20+ people were shot and killed" ie Dayton, El Paso, etc. When in reality, over half of the mass shootings result in zero deaths, and are not the type of indiscriminate acts that we had last week. But the news story doesn't mention that, because the soundbyte of one mass shooting per day is more concise and scary.

^to some extent, yes

I don't feel like a mass shooting needs to result in deaths in order to be classified as a mass shooting.

A botched armed robbery at a bank that results in multiple people being shot and injured, a family sitting at home alone when a botched burglary results in multiple people being shot and injured, a group of friends hanging out at someone's house when a jilted lover arrives and shoots and injures multiple people and a disgruntled employee showing up to work and shooting and injuring multiple colleagues are all mass shootings, and no one necessarily would have needed to have died in order for that to be the case.

I love how the discussion has devolved into what constitutes a mass shooting, because in TT’s eyes, it’s misleading to call something a “mass shooting” unless enough innocent people are murdered all at once to make him feel sad. 3-4 people die? Nbd. 20+ ? NOW we’re taking!

Quote :
"Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group that tracks shootings and their characteristics in the United States, defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people, excluding the perpetrators, are shot in one location at roughly the same time.[4] The Congressional Research Service narrows that definition further, only considering what it defines as "public mass shootings", and only considering victims as those who are killed, excluding any victims who survive.[2] The Washington Post and Mother Jones use similar definitions, with the latter acknowledging that their definition "is a conservative measure of the problem", as many rampages with fewer fatalities occur.[5][6] The crowdsourced Mass Shooting Tracker project defines a mass shooting as "an incident where four or more people are shot in a single shooting spree. This may include the gunman himself, or police shootings of civilians around the gunman."[7]"

Sounds like it's misleading to others, since there are so many different definitions

Those all sound preetttttyyy similar.

You came in here complaining that smaller shootings don't get enough attn, now you're complaining about a definition that gives more attn to smaller shootings.

Gun control frustrates me on the same level as climate change. Even more so, because one is about actual, current destruction and the other is about potential, albeit inevitable, future destruction. But ultimately they are both indisputable, so in no reasonable world that is operated by reason should there be a debate on what we need to do. How we do it, understandable, but what should be a no brainer.

Hey idiots, you realize that arguing about what a mass shooting is is distracting from the point that this country has a problem, right?

How bout the government just subsidizes dick-enlargement surgeries for all these gun nuts. If they didnt have such tiny needle-dicks, maybe they wouldn't feel the need to have a ton of guns

Both arguments tend to quickly devolve into shitty Facebook memes about “if you outlaw guns only the outlaws will have guns” (as if anybody suggested all guns be outlawed)...or....”arctic blast in February? What happened to global warming lol?!” And when one side digs in on such absurd arguments, it’s kinda impossible to ever have a reasoned discussion about what realistic, achievable policy might look like.

anytime gun control comes up, it's always "i'm not going to give my guns up" as if that's the only definition of gun control they're familiar with.

So I worked in Building 2 for 11 years in Virginia Beach and was there May 31st when 12 were killed. Luckily the 1st floor - my department- wasn’t impacted, just floors 2 & 3. Almost everyone had to move out. I went back in the building to pack up but didn’t want to go upstairs. I’m happy to report that my department is finally coming back together next week in a new location 4 miles from our old building. One day we will move back to the municipal campus. We’re still dealing with the loss of our friends and dealing with what ifs.

Quote :
"PHILADELPHIA — Just after midnight, a suspect surrendered after shooting six police officers in a north Philadelphia neighborhood on Wednesday evening, igniting a standoff that dragged on for hours in what authorities called a hostage situation.

The suspect is Maurice Hill, a 36-year-old Philadelphia resident with a history of gun convictions, his former lawyer told The Washington Post. Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp confirmed on Twitter early Thursday that the suspect is in custody.

The suspect walked out of the house with his arms raised in the air as local TV crews filmed the scene."

San Fran declares the NRA a domestic terrorist organization.

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/san-francisco-has-declared-the-nra-a-domestic-terrorist-organisation

Cool reply video by the NRA. Click to watch.

Quote :
"In a news release on Wednesday, Ms Stefani referred to the federal Justice Department’s definition of terrorist activity, which involves the use of a firearm, weapon or dangerous device to endanger the safety of individuals. The definition also includes members of organisations that provide funds, weapons or training to individuals who commit terrorist acts.

The gun homicide rate in the United States is 25 times higher than any other high-income country and the gun ownership rate is two times higher, Ms Stefani said. With 393 million guns in this country, there are more guns than people, she added.

“Every country on Earth has video games, movies and mental health issues, and yet only the US has gun violence at elementary schools, at the movies, at Walmart,” Ms Stefani said. “The difference is guns. No other country has so many assault rifles on their streets.”"

Damn right, Ms Stefani.

Quote :
"Michael Moore

This week the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to declare the NRA a “terrorist organization.” Yes. More of this. Since the Columbine massacre in 1999, the number of gun deaths in the US (that’s Americans killing Americans)— it’s as if 9/11 has now happened 160 more times."
