Didn't 3-9 NCSU beat #1 App pretty easily in 2006
9/2/2016 4:53:02 PM
They did indeed
9/2/2016 5:04:38 PM
IIRC that was a game before what's his face was inserted at quarterback for App. Maybe it made a difference, maybe not.

Louis Vuitton Jackson was his name
9/2/2016 5:41:10 PM
^^Yes, but App state won it the year before too.
9/2/2016 5:56:51 PM
Lol at taking credit for calling a close game... we won 48-14.. outgained them 521-168... they could barely get a first down... that was an ass beating by any stretch of the imagination. Certainly larger than most expected

Can someone break down ECU's game from yesterday? I saw the score, but not how they got there. Details please
9/4/2016 8:11:46 AM
the ECU offense scored a lot of points. the ECU defense kept WCU from scoring many points.also, i feel like that game should be a yearly rivalry with a trophy for the battle between imaginary states.]
9/4/2016 9:24:15 AM
^ no
9/4/2016 10:44:07 AM
ECU offense looked potent. Keep in mind WCU has NO push from the DL and put no pressure on their QB, clearly that won't be the case next week. They have a really good WR that is going to be a problem for us.ECU defense...too early to tell really. They held WCU to 7 points, but gave up 320 yards and 150 on the ground. Not sure how much of that was garbage time, but if WCU can put 150 yards on the ground, we should be able to hit at least that. Will be a good test for our D, need to score early and keep from having to play catch-up. I fully expect ECU to treat this like their SB with it being a home game. Looking at their home schedule, it's clearly the biggest game they'll host this year. Side-note: Their home schedule is AWFUL and I'd be pissed if I was a season-ticket holder.
9/4/2016 10:49:59 AM
I honestly feel the Navy game on Oct 13th is bigger. Mostly because its Thursday night football on ESPN.Its always good to beat ACC teams though. (5-1 in last 6 games)[Edited on September 4, 2016 at 11:48 AM. Reason : only one edit remark allowed. just stopped by.]

congratulations on winning your intrastate rivalry game yesterday. you guys own the state of carolina.
9/4/2016 12:23:03 PM
Congrats to your victory over the powerhouse W&M. 12-0 Pack!
9/4/2016 12:48:54 PM
Why does your field have an outline of the state of North Carolina on it rather than one of East Carolina?
9/4/2016 2:04:30 PM
^because the pirate is on the eastern enddirectional schools should be banned in directional states. They should just be NC State Greenville.
9/4/2016 2:08:30 PM
Just change it back to East Carolina Teachers Collegeand while we are at it...University of North Carolina at Raleigh! (60s throwback)
9/4/2016 2:39:01 PM
That was never the name of NC State. It was called North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh for two whole years.
9/4/2016 3:40:28 PM
Beating a top 10 FCS team vs. an average FCS team is quite a bit different. I think it's dumb to make fun of either, but I'd say us beating W&M is a more impressive victory than WCU even if both are just FCS teams. But it's funny to see 3-4 Power 5 teams losing to FCS teams this week, and they weren't even top 10 teams.
9/4/2016 3:48:42 PM
This of course will be ECU's superbowl, as it always is when they play us or unc, so we gotta be ready. They surprise and beat teams like us because our players think of them as another William and Mary, while ECU is planning it's season around beating us and treats it like the "end all be all" as their coach once said.DD I hope has been here long enough to realize that, and can somehow motivate our guys against this lesser, yet dangerous opponent.
9/4/2016 4:12:31 PM
Until we stop being dismissive of ECU, we don't really have any right to whine when we're treated similarly from UNC.I'll borrow the term regularly used in hockey - they're bringing their compete level. Now it's just up to our players and coaches to recognize that they can't take the team lightly. Their 'superbowl' or not, it's no reason why we can't go to Greenville and handle our business. If we do, it's a positive sign of our team and the direction it's going. If we don't, then it's obvious that we're not mentally ready and we're looking at a 5 win season.
9/4/2016 4:31:28 PM
Is ECU in the ACC? No. I care about playing them as much as I care about playing App State.[Edited on September 4, 2016 at 4:44 PM. Reason : except App fans aren't a bunch of assholes.]
9/4/2016 4:43:43 PM
Yea I mean it's true it doesn't matter, they are a low level opponent from a crappy conference. So win or lose. We gain nothing. ACC games matter a million times more. However, just in case we are in position to get chosen for a higher level bowl, having a loss against a CUSA or whatever conference they are in now (American C?), Doesn't look very good.
9/4/2016 5:14:55 PM
Good for you, you might be in the minority when it comes to a lack of caring about this matchup. Most will care either because it is in fact an in-state matchup that garners a lot of interest or because it's a colossal trap game that we have little to gain but a lot to lose, which is why we duck this game when we can.Don't know that many folks that would treat this one like a non-conference game against Western Michigan or UCF - meh.
9/4/2016 5:20:15 PM
^ Yup, and as hoops said it's a good litmus test.
9/4/2016 5:46:57 PM
In order for this to qualify as a trap game, wouldn't we have to be the overwhelming favorites? And wouldn't we also need a big game the following week that would take our eyes of the prize (a la Wake Forest before Ohio State back in '03?)I absolutely see no reason why we should ever consistently play ECU, let alone in Greenville. Every time we play them, we legitimize them as an in-state contender, which is not advantageous to us AT ALL. And when we lose to them, which happens often, it hurts our ability to establish any traction for in-state dominance. North Carolina is overcrowded as is with big(ish) football programs, there's absolutely no reason to willingly invite ECU into the club. It's strategically in our (and UNC's) best interests to ice them out as often as possible to reduce the number of college football powers within the state.I hate this game. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
9/4/2016 6:15:57 PM
^i agree totally. Don't get me wrong, this game means slightly more than will and Mary or something due to NC recruiting, but it doesn't mean close to an ACC opponent, or if we were playing an out of conference team from a power 5 conference.
9/4/2016 6:22:59 PM
We are not overlooking them and it could not be a trap game in any way.1. Its "trapped" between W&M and ODU2. It would be our best win under DD3. Losing this game would probably mean no bowl for us this year since we have 6 games against great teams. This game means a lot and everyone should know that.

9/4/2016 7:44:00 PM
i care about this game. what i mean is that no one east of raleigh gives a shit about ecu. and i'm not referring to just state fans.ecu fans are desperate for a rival. state already has 3 in-state teams we play every year in every sport (besides football) and have a history with. i don't get any more excited to play ecu than i do any other non-ranked out of conference opponent.i'm not being elitist, i don't think we're inherently better than them (besides being in the ACC).]
9/4/2016 8:03:44 PM
^I assume you mean ONLY people East of Raleigh care about ECU?
9/4/2016 9:53:34 PM
our best win in DD era is probably @UNC in year 2. but it's a very low bar.i've been a state fan my whole life (where's my trophy?) and i've always viewed the ecu game as a rivarly. but just not the level of unc. they hate us probably more than we hate them, but there's plenty of hate to go around. the main difference with this rivalry is that because they are in a different and weaker conference there is little reason to pay much attention to them when we aren't playing them. unc's success, or lack of, directly impacts us in the conference much more than ecu's. plus, of course, we don't play them every year. it's a rivalry imo - not that i can speak for everybody's view of the game. but it's easy to forget about the rivalry or downplay it in years we don't play them. but the "we don't care about them" stuff is kinda dumb and seems incorrect...at least for a lot of the fan base.and tbh, i consider ecu more of a rival than wake forest in football. and we play wake every year.[Edited on September 4, 2016 at 10:12 PM. Ok, I grew up in the Piedmont of this fine state, and I can honestly say that I seriously wasn't super aware of ECU, AT ALL, until i was enrolled at state and we started playing them in various sports. And throughout middle school and highschool, i was seriously a RAVENOUS NC State/ACC sports fan. My entire family was hardcore NC State/ UNC (we were kind of half and half). I grew up watching us battle UNC, Wake, Duke, etc, and had a working knowledge of all these schools sports programs, and their players. I was a big local NC college athletics fan. However, I HONESTLY don't think I had ANY awareness of ECU during this time. I swear im not trolling in anyway. I have nothing against ECU as a school or whatever. I actually have a family member who went to medical school there recently, and I bet he got a fine education. It seems like a fine school. whatevs. But I seriously never heard of the place until I was actually in college, and the pack was playing them in football, and I was previously a huge college football fan. Its just that... if you aren't in a major conference, and I dont have family or friends that went to your school, nobody is gonna know who the fuck you are, and that's just bottom line.[Edited on September 4, 2016 at 10:18 PM. Reason : Just the Bottom line, and im sorry]
9/4/2016 10:14:58 PM
I understand why you are shocked by the biggest game comment but I think its bigger because that unc team went 6-6 and i expect this ecu team to win a lot more games and end the "DD has 0 wins over teams with >.500 record" I think if we lose this game the program is dying and would need a huge upset over a ranked team to undo it. Pivotal game.

just kinda curious about what time frame you're talking about ^^^. i only ask because, looking back at the series...we played them every single year from 1970-1987. but then went 10 years without scheduling a reg season game against them, the next one being in 1996. of course there was the '92 peach bowl game, but that was obviously not a game that was scheduled by the two athletic departments. the series was canceled by Valvano when they trashed our field in '87. and since '96 we've played them on a very regular basis, not every year, but about every other year on average since then. this will be our 10th meeting with them since 1996.what i'm getting at is that if you were growing up around the late 80s-early 90s i can see where you wouldn't really be aware of them too much...we went a decade without playing them aside from that peach bowl game. otherwise, we've played them on a fairly regular basis. and while they have certainly been no Boise St, they've had a fair amount of success for their level. they're generally a bowl team in recent years...10 bowl games since 2000, but definitely had a long stretch of shitty football in the 80s.
9/4/2016 10:26:48 PM
Would beating ECU be a bigger win for Doeren than knocking off #18 Kent State back in 2012? Theeman previously said that was DD's biggest career win.
9/4/2016 10:35:59 PM
9/4/2016 11:08:54 PM
But they DON'T HAVE TO BE a rival. We can control that by not playing them. And by not playing them, we can marginalize their football standing whilst elevating our own.If you are going to have an out-of-conference rival, then it should be a rivalry that is mutually beneficial to both parties. Potentially a rival from another state (say, South Carolina, for instance) where both teams stand to benefit from a broader viewing base and increased recruiting exposure. As it stands, only ECU benefits from our continued insistence on recognizing this "rivalry."
9/4/2016 11:43:50 PM
^^^^time frame is 1994-2003. This was the time before college, in which i was a huuuuge acc sports fanatic. during this period, i was barely aware ecu was a university if im gonna be honest. i probably saw them as another random lower tier nc school when we played them in sports. they seriously just werent on my radar when i had State, Wake, Duke, UNC, in-state to think about.i guess it has to do with where you grew up in NC[Edited on September 4, 2016 at 11:50 PM. Reason : i mean no offense to ecu, fine school indeed]
9/4/2016 11:48:48 PM
For people who don't give a damn about ECU you people have no problem writing think pieces every time we play.
9/5/2016 12:08:18 AM
^^^ Rivalries should be something organic, not something that's manufactured or developed to benefit the schools. Rivalries are fueled by the fanbases, and the fan bases are fueled on ol' good fashioned hate. We have a plenty good foundation right here with NCSU and ECU. Funny how school proximity and the fact that they are two of the three largest public schools in the state would have a hand in that. It's always nice to have a higher profile rival. Everyone wants College Gameday to come to their campus. But those rivalries are harder to forge and they come naturally through success. We'll get some national rivals when we're on the national radar.[Edited on September 5, 2016 at 12:10 AM. Reason : .]

^^^ I'm just being honest as a sports fan growing up. I mean no offense to ecu. I don't mind ecu. Fine school or whatever. But honestly, this just wasn't a game on anybody's radar where I grew up in NC. And I bring it up now, because I see ppl have this debate on here every year, and I wanted to add my honest two cents.I'm sorry it doesn't jive with your experience of ecu being a rival or something, but it just wasn't the same for my area of NC. Sorry.^wow, sorry man I didn't know much about the illustrious ecu sports history growing up. No need to get personal. Jeez...[Edited on September 5, 2016 at 12:21 AM. Reason : Rude discourse]
