Truthfully I don't give a shit that Caitlyn was a he and decided to chop his dick off and "be" a woman. We live in a free country and that's his right if it's what makes him happy though it's my right to sit there and scratch my head. I wish this shit was not new headline worthy.

My only concern was the hypothetical I presented earlier that no one answered. If Caitlyn was 40 years younger should he/she be allowed to compete in the Olympics in the woman's track events. Biologically he has the advantage of being a male yet he identifies as a female.

There's a whole host of experiences that go in to being a woman. We can be cute and be all, "Some women can't have babies! Does that make them not a woman?!?!?" But, really, I don't know if I can have babies. I've never been pregnant. And, now that I'm old, it's something I have to think about on dates. Can I make babies for this man who's trying to be cool but clearly wants babies in his life right now? (I don't think I can. I was raised primarily by my father, and he is amazing. I doubt that I'll ever meet a man for whom I would actually carry another life in my belly and split myself open to do whatever it is that goes into birthing babies.)

I've also been accused of posing as a man. A gentleman--and he did identify as he--in a neon green, sparkly tube top wanted to know "what I was." I had no clue what he was talking about, but we chatted, and I eventually discovered that my baggy jeans and baseball cap were baffling to him. He couldn't understand why a woman wouldn't want to leverage her sexual appeal all the time.

A lot of you have been suggesting that gender is a social construct, and it's not binary. Well, if it's a social construct, it's definitely binary...that's how we constructed it, dipshits. Still, if we need to include people who don't feel like the gender that society treats them as, then I'm down with it. I won't bat an eye.

But, in my head, I will always roll my eyes at the woman who's posing as a caricature of a woman.

We need a third gender.

And that is part of my whole point. Being a woman isn't just having boobs, putting on some makeup and nail polish, walking around in high heels and wearing a dress. Being a woman is the net result of a lifetime of experiences, both positive and negative. To go and call yourself a woman after spending 50 years as a man and not having, but just wishing for those experiences, is discounting women everywhere.

Well the definition of feminsim is: the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.

I think it's more complicated than that. And I hope I'm not being taken as intolerant. Most of my remarks are specific to Caitlyn and her views on what it means to be a woman.

To me, a critical look at her decision could foster an interesting conversation about what it means to be a woman or a man. I don't know exactly how I would describe it, and I certainly wouldn't want to define maleness when I'm not a dude. The only thing I've been able to articulate is just some random experiences in the lives of myself and some women I know.

Again, gender is binary because that's how we constructed it. And that has caused some problems for many of us, including some very severe ones. But I thought we had worked hard to loosen up the gendered rules and roles we place on others and ourselves. Still, I understand that they want to be treated a certain way, not just get to behave a certain way...so attempts to change gender make sense.

Still, what doesn't make sense is finally getting your gender reassignment and the first thing you do is get photographed in lingerie on the cover of a magazine.

I'm coming in late to the discussion, so I don't know if this has been mentioned yet...

First off, I'm all for marriage equality and equal rights for the LGBs. I believe that these people are truly born that way.

But I'm having difficulty understanding why we should accept the new gender of a trans. Looking at it as a disorder, when has society ever accepted a person's disorder instead of treating it?

In other words, if I'm suffering from schizophrenia and have delusions of grandeur that I'm Jesus Christ, people aren't going to indulge me and cater to my fucked up belief. "Yes, you are Jesus Christ."

How is this not any different?

I fully support gay marriage. But that has to be the dumbest attempt at a point that you've ever made. For a gay couple to reproduce, you're no longer talking about a couple. You need a third party. Now granted, some heterosexual couples who have issues reproducing must go to a third party as well, but that is the exception to the rule. For for every gay couple, you need a third person to provide something for reproduction.

Not sure where this thread is at this point (not going back to re-read) but i think i've mentioned this before... if someone (of sound mind) wants to change their sex/gender then more power to them. it doesn't affect me in any appreciable way.

The one exception is bathrooms. I would have a problem if someone with a penis is using the same school/public bathroom as my little girl, no matter what gender they identify as. People should go to the bathroom according to their current sex as defined by their genitals. If a person with a penis identifies as female and they have a major issue using the boy's room, i'd support letting them use a single-stall bathroom (like a teacher bathroom or one of those "family" bathrooms). That seems to be a fair and equitable solution.
