I don't think allowing students to carry is a good idea. In fact, I think it is a bad idea. Let us let our universities have their 'pomeriums'. At least depending on the area.

At the same time, I don't think the gun free zone here really means anything in terms of safety.
It's just cause our ape pattern identifying mind jumps to guns=xyz and moreguns=morexyz, and extrapolating that to whatever opinion you are partial to, good or bad.

Specifically to the most recent case of the brandisher, unless there are some additional details as to how he procured the gun, I'm just gonna assume a first time gun related offense and a lawful purchase for the purpose of this comment. Sometimes, people just do bad stuff? And that's how we end up arresting and jailing them as should be done.

When it comes to the actual spree/mass shooting type stuff (which even the first case last two weeks ago was not), I know republicans use mental health here as a way to dodge the gun policy part completely, but is that not... the cause? A person who from the outside seems ordinary, not some criminal, and thus can acquire a gun legally if they want.

There definitely is a need for a more active and reasonable discussion on gun control, but I don't like the reactionary approach to it that would probably just in ineffectual legislation meant to provide some illusion of more safety.
