^^^i was referring the the Final 4 they achieved the year they are being punished for.
3/6/2015 12:39:15 PM
It's just -3 a year right? That's not that big a deal as long as you don't miss on anyone or have huge injury problems. Hell, Gott self imposes -2 a year anyway
3/6/2015 12:40:41 PM
He only uses a two man bench anyway...
3/6/2015 12:48:49 PM
3/6/2015 12:50:36 PM
108 games. Now sixth all time.
3/6/2015 12:52:51 PM
^Which would put him ~300 wins behind K. Time to pack it up, K.
3/6/2015 1:08:28 PM
Scholarship reduction will take it's toll...on whoever the next coach is.Did see they might actually have to pull a kid's offer who is committed to them for the '15 class. Crazy. Also wonder if they'll let kids transfer out without penalty or not because no post-season sanction is in place.
3/6/2015 1:26:24 PM
I hope y'all realize that these sanctions aren't that damaging at all. They just look bad as a press release, but in reality mean nothing.
3/6/2015 2:44:42 PM
cool talking point, bro. they are pretty damaging to Boeheim's legacy though.
3/6/2015 2:45:26 PM
They're a little more than a slap on the wrist, but overall...I agree. How many major universities use more than 10 scholarships anyways? Hell, look at Duke...they've got what, 6 or 7? We've got 10 and thats high. Going from 13 to 10 will barely hurt them. Having less recruiters on the road will hurt a little, but not terribly. Vacating wins and the like is fluff. Syracuse will hurt a little having to pay back the television money. Thats got to be a lot of money. We'll see what happens.
3/6/2015 2:47:33 PM
10 hurts a lot.It limits the skill of the guys you are practicing against. It also means you have to hope for no injuries, no academic casualties, no disciplinary suspensions, no transfers, and no leaving early for the NBA. It's puts the margin for error at zero. Three scholarships a year is HUGE.
3/6/2015 2:51:42 PM
There is absolutely no reason UNC shouldnt drop 3 banners and vacate 27 years worth of wins or however long that shit was going on. If they arent gonna give them the death penalty they should at least drop like 10 scholarships a year for 10+ years. In reality they will simply be heralded for fighting through such adversity and coming out even stronger. Fuck this bullshit!
3/6/2015 2:55:43 PM
Syracuse's penalties give me a little more hope that UNC will get smashed by the NCAA. However based on how long it took them to punish Syracuse, UNC probably won't see sanctions until like 2018.
3/6/2015 3:00:50 PM
3/6/2015 3:02:43 PM
Top level programs dont use 13 scholarships. The only programs that do are ones that need to develop players over 3-4 years so that they'll be college ready. Most all of Syracuse's recruits are already college ready and play early. Not to mention that if you are the 11th, 12 or 13th player on Syracuse's roster, you're prolly transferring. Its today's college basketball. Big time college's just don't use 13 scholarships. Kids don't stick around long enough anymore to use that many.
3/6/2015 3:04:52 PM
^ they aren't Duke or Kentucky. They don't get top classes every year. They will feel the scholarship hit.
3/6/2015 3:06:07 PM
you kidding me? They, like UNC, had a 6th man coming off of the bench that went on to be an NBA starter.[Edited on March 6, 2015 at 3:12 PM. Reason : a]
3/6/2015 3:10:34 PM
Just heard on Adam and Joe that they will also be restricted to 2 off campus recruiters per year. Vacated wins, reduction in scholarships and recruiting. This is a lot more than a slap on the wrist. If UNC-CH gets this level of punishment, I would be happy. They deserve worse, but I am not expecting it.
3/6/2015 3:15:54 PM
Top 100 guys aren't signing up with Syracuse to be the 11th man. The scholarship thing is basically useless for top college programs. I don't think we've come close to using 13 scholarships in a long time here at NC State. Much less Syracuse.
3/6/2015 3:16:19 PM
when you start talking about post season bans and bringing down banners, then you are getting into serious territory. Them having to work around the slight reduction in recruitment personnel should be nothing more than a tiny hick-up.[Edited on March 6, 2015 at 3:19 PM. Reason : there]
3/6/2015 3:18:15 PM
the biggest detriment to their program would be a multiple season postseason ban. That didn't happen. Vacating meaningless wins, only allowing 2 coaches on the road at a time to recruit and only allowing them 10 scholarships per year is really not that big of a deal. The biggest deal in this whole thing is the money they have to pay back for TV/Tournament royalties from their Big East days.
3/6/2015 3:22:31 PM
They self imposed a post season ban. They probably wont be going next year because of the scholarship reductions (and their best players leaving).
3/6/2015 3:22:41 PM
Losing 3 scholarships a year for 4 years is definitely not a lax punishment.Y'all are crazyIt might not be a big deal in magical fantasy land, but in the real world where transfers, injuries and plain old busts are part of the game it's a big deal. The other part of the punishment that isn't getting talked about enough is the limit on off campus recruiting. Ask Les Robinson how that works. This punishment is retarded though, because I'm pretty sure Syracuse is gonna have to cut people to get to the scholarship limit. They have 13 scholarships already taken for next year. They can postpone the reduction for one year, but they still have 12 guys for 10 spots in 2016 (11 players enrolled/signed + 1 commit). Great job, NCAA.

he was the 2nd winningest all time coach in college basketball, now he's not even in the top 5. how is that preserving his legacy? he's been Syracuse's coach since before most of us were born and it all happened on his watch with his players and his staff.
3/6/2015 3:28:46 PM
Fwiw it's happened twice under him now.
3/6/2015 3:34:16 PM
I can't believe this investigation took the NCAA 8 years. At that pace, we wont see sanctions against UNC-CH until 2020.
3/6/2015 3:41:55 PM
3/6/2015 4:24:53 PM
one of the key ways I could see the scholarship limits affecting them is with incoming transfers. IIRC, incoming transfers that are sitting out their redshirt season (like Henderson for us this year) still count against the scholarship limit, so I'd think they would be less likely to be able to get transfers knowing that they'd by tying up a scholarship for one year without getting any immediate contribution from that player.
3/6/2015 5:05:53 PM
incoming transfers typically aren't scrubs though.
3/6/2015 5:28:59 PM
yeah, ask Rodney Purvis
3/6/2015 5:39:30 PM
^^ you're missing the point. if they have an incoming transfer sitting out the year, they'd only be able to have 9 active scholarship players that season.
3/6/2015 5:48:51 PM
I hope the College Gameday folks say something about UNC and their scandal

What a lying bitch Boeheim is. Fess up, admit your mistakes, accept your punishment, and move on. Learn from A-roid and Lance Armstrong.

Had a sad conversation about college athletics with a UNC Charlotte graduate the other night. She was involved in the preliminary voting for the new football program (UNC Charlotte), back like 4 years ago when it was being discussed. She said her and the others in her group (I didn't get specifics on how it worked in the early stages) all wanted them to "spend the money on basketball since they had a pretty good basketball team" (you know, that one year in the NCAA tournament). My question was how do you spend more money to make a program that is already "good" into something ACC level. I explained to her just building more facilities doesn't make your program better and then came the She said that she knows facilities won't make them better if their facilities are already at a high enough level. So I ask her what she would do with the money then and she says she would spend it on recruiting.. I ask her how you spend more money on recruiting and she says to pay the players. "I know they aren't supposed to, but everyone does it". Now this is a college educated 30 year old woman and someone that follows the UNC investigation a little. However when it comes to her own personal opinion of her college, she tells me that every college pays their players when recruiting. I told her, "yea, just like Carolina does huh?" and then got in my car and left.

I was in a diner here in Miami when Gameday was on, but it was on mute. I saw them bring out bubble teams in front of the hosts. One of them was us. It looked pretty hilarious as the UNC fans were booing. Does anyone have a clip or can upload one?[Edited on March 7, 2015 at 3:06 PM. Reason : ]
