i just had a thought, is the shape maybe like this because their fancy new metal is more difficult to stamp?

It actually is folded, more origami like, rather than stamped.

I assumed it was to keep costs down. Probably a lot easier to make a few press breaks with off the shelf equipment vs having to keep making custom molded body panel molds.

the cyber truck made me want to hurl at first...but now it's sort of growing on me. not because i don't still think it's ugly. it is fucking ugly.. I just think that it would be super functional.

if it turns out to be hell-and-back tough, efficient, and reliable, I can possibly see getting one. even more so if the full-self-driving gets worked out.

Full self driving is still a decade away. Not sure why anyone with any sense can fool themselves into thinking otherwise.

Quote :
"Level 2 ("hands off"): The automated system takes full control of the vehicle (accelerating, braking, and steering). The driver must monitor the driving and be prepared to intervene immediately at any time if the automated system fails to respond properly. The shorthand "hands off" is not meant to be taken literally. In fact, contact between hand and wheel is often mandatory during SAE 2 driving, to confirm that the driver is ready to intervene.
Level 3 ("eyes off"): The driver can safely turn their attention away from the driving tasks, e.g. the driver can text or watch a movie. The vehicle will handle situations that call for an immediate response, like emergency braking. The driver must still be prepared to intervene within some limited time, specified by the manufacturer, when called upon by the vehicle to do so.
Level 4 ("mind off"): As level 3, but no driver attention is ever required for safety, e.g. the driver may safely go to sleep or leave the driver's seat. Self-driving is supported only in limited spatial areas (geofenced) or under special circumstances. Outside of these areas or circumstances, the vehicle must be able to safely abort the trip, e.g. park the car, if the driver does not retake control.
Level 5 ("steering wheel optional"): No human intervention is required at all. An example would be a robotic taxi."

Perhaps level 5 is beyond 2022 but I doubt its a decade away. Tesla is talking about level 4. They already have level 3.

I ordered a midrange with self driving. You lock in your 7,000 dollar price-tag now but the feature may cost 20k+ when they roll it out. I regret not getting the 3 engine because that would give you enough range to make a bed, go to sleep and wake up 8 hours away. Probably going to order 2.

I can even see level 5 being a decade away...but I think we’ll be at level 4 considerably before that.

the tech isn't the hold up.. the legal battle is. we've got a fleet of cars that drive hundreds of unassisted miles in san fran traffic every day without issue. the problem is, what happens when the car sees a corner case it's never seen and chooses wrong and someone gets hurt? that's the liability precedent that's holding things back

I'm assuming by your response you don't know what a corner case is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corner_case

snow, wild life, pedestrians, etc are all part of training.

without going into a ton of secret sauce, if you can dream the scenario, I can and probably am training it, faster than you think.

The 2nd and 3rd renderings here (flat top SUVs) look waaaaay better. The pointy roof of the original is what makes it look ridiculous--like a cockroach or something.

I think that due to it being a [semi?] monocoque structure, that is needed for structural integrity

Honda has a more traditional unibody, and they're also dealing with what, 1/3 of the power and 1/3 of the towing capacity?

Honda made it work as essentially a tall AWD car with a little bed, but not in the context of a real-deal full-size pickup.

I think there will be some modifications before final release.

but im not sure if the side sections are removable due to the xy body construction. Also seems like they have made use of the space inside the section for storage.

i think the high bed side panels are a result of not being able to do complex stamping with the material and having to stick with simple bends

jfc, musk actually hired an investigator to try to dig up dirt on the guy he called a "pedo guy" and emailed reporters and called him a child rapist.

after seeing the truck reveal, which was the first time i saw him on video, i was just so mesmerized by how damn awkward and lacking social skills he is.

Elon Musk wins defamation case over 'pedo guy' tweet about caver
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50695593

Quote :
"One of the smartest moves by Elon Musk's defence was in introducing the concept of "JDart", an acronym to describe their client's conduct on Twitter in relation to the infamous "pedo guy" tweet.

A JDart, lawyer Alex Spiro explained, meant: a Joke that was badly received, therefore Deleted, with an Apology and then Responsive Tweets to move on from the matter. JDart.

It's clumsy, for sure, but it meant Mr Spiro could offer the jury here a degree of structure around what before seemed senseless: Mr Musk may have acted foolishly with the J, but he soon "darted", which is how you know he wasn't being serious about the allegation.

Expect the JDart "standard" to be applied again and again, not just in libel trials, but in any arena where social media behaviour is under scrutiny - a parachute for anyone who, in the heat of the moment, says something idiotic online."

What a sicko.

^^lol I drove to Raleigh that day or the day before and almost was in two accidents with two different Teslas whose drivers decided to switch lanes on a crowded interstate without both using turn signals and looking to see if the lane was clear. I just assumed they didn't put turn signals on the car.

I guess they have just attracted some of the shitty driver market away from BMW.

thats strange.. you actually must use your turn signal to change lanes or the car will highlight the lane lines in blue on screen and physically nudge your car back into your lane..you have to force the car into the other lane essentially when not using the signal. Unless they disabled the lane keep assist features. If I try to change lanes without my signal its not smooth due to the resistance the wheel has from the lane keeping .

Haven’t been on Tdub in forever.

Bought a long range AWD model 3 in may 2019, have the full self drive and acceleration boost software. I’m pretty happy with it.

Bought Tesla stock at 190 dollars and sold it at 520, happy about that too
