Correct. And the classification of a page is typically listed at the top and bottom of the page.

^^, ^ I always thought we were supposed to be better than them. Yet here we are, celebrating the death of a person. Are we really so different after all?

Quote :
"I have had one daughter graduate RU last year and another daughter graduate this Saturday. All these kids were 11-12 or younger on 9/11. Their family, friends, classmates or they themselves have bravely served or are serving our country because of 9/11. They have every emotional right to celebrate last night. It is their VJ-Day!! I wish i could have been there with ya!"

The killing of one man and the potential backlash from these people is hardly comparable to "VJ-Day." If this is their/our VJ-Day, it is a very shallow one in deed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we got him. Burning shit and committing crimes is just awful.

The only thing to celebrate is that "we got him." I would have preferred him alive than dead.

Yeah, I think the CIA's dedicated bin Laden task force originated in the mid-90s. We came very close to killing him several times before 9/11 even happened, but held back due to lack of 100% certainty on everything or due to the chance of collateral damage (I think they were worried about killing his children and stuff with a TLAM strike, for example). We had ships positioned for months primarily to take TLAM shots at OBL, even before 9/11.

He had a major falling out with the Saudi royals. He had been stirring up domestic trouble, advocating their overthrow, due to them not being extreme enough religiously.

Now, I have no information on this, or I wouldn't be talking, but I don't believe for a second that he's not in a CIA lab at Langley right now getting scanned, probed, measured, dissected, etc.

".our human intelligence abilities are 2nd to none in the world"

I don't know...our HUMINT is pretty impressive, but I don't know if it's the best in the world. I'm pretty sure the Soviets had us beat in that regard back in the day...not sure how we stack up now. Historically, we're fucking AWESOME at technical collection, and I still think we're relatively stronger at that than the human side. We might be the best at HUMINT nowadays, too...but if so, just think about how much ass we kick at all the other -INTs.

Quote :
"now they are saying that they took some dna samples from bin Laden's body after he was killed but before he was buried at sea.

How long did this whole operation take place? They were making it sound like it was a difficult mission to get in and get out of the country"

Quote :
"
I don't understand why DNA samples would matter. Did they have his DNA before?"

It's not that tough to get into Pakistan. We've been doing a good bit of it, particularly over the last year or two.

...and I'm sure we had DNA samples on him. The CIA has had a dedicated bin Laden task force since the mid-90s. We have dudes who do nothing but study OBL's voice. I'm sure that DNA is the least of it--that's why I don't believe that we chucked him over the side of a ship...I don't believe that the CIA would stop with DNA and simple biometrics that we perform on garden-variety bad guys when we kill them.

You mean 30 years.

Quote :
"^Should have told them that we were about to launch the mission (after we already concluded it) then monitor all their outgoing phone calls to identify persons of interest."

Goddamn right. Stuff like that gets done, though.

As far as releasing pictures, I'd love to see them, but I'd lean towards not making them public. They aren't going to convince anyone who is already stupid enough to be skeptical that he's dead, and they would probably generate some additional backlash.

...and I'm as happy as anyone that this motherfucker got shot in the face, but all this chanting and stuff is kind of douchey. Chanting, in general, is pretty douchey in every circumstance I can think of. Oddly enough, it also seems like the general public is about 100x more excited about this than the military. Everybody at work today was just kinda like "Oh, cool. We killed bin Laden. Let's go fix and fly some jets, and handle our business like any other day."

I heard tonight that one of his sisters was in Boston a few years back for medical treatment and the FBI rolled in there and subpoenaed a blood sample to get sibling DNA for comparison.

Also they're now saying that the SEALs didn't fast rope in, instead they just landed the helicopters in the courtyard. Now, I'm no defensive expert here, but if I were building a safehouse to protect someone from capture and/or assassination from a bunch of guys with helicopters, one of my first ideas would be to not have a huge area inside the compound where a helicopter could land.

Regarding the DNA samples, all they would need is some hair or a quick blood draw... My question is, how long did it take for them to get the results back? I would think in a matter like this it would be of the utmost priority and wouldn't take long at all.

Our HUMINT is laughably horrible, at least until the last 12-24 months. The post-9/11 money pumped into the CIA made it even more wasteful and useless. I'm hoping that the success of this mission is an indicator that Panetta & Obama have made some drastic changes within the Agency and putting focus back on HUMINT again. The problem isn't with the people on the ground or at HQ within the Agency, they are mostly quite brilliant, but the massive bureaucracy put in place to seemingly reduce effective actionable intelligence from making it's way to the President in a timely manner.

I might have been a little charitable. HUMINT is definitely not generally our strong suit. However, our intel and military capabilities are so badass that even on something that we are weak at (relatively speaking), we might still be better than anyone else.

Quote :

One thing is that it wasn't too much trouble to recruit Soviets to go live in America. Finding Americans to give up their lives here and go live in the Soviet Union for a relatively modest salary was a tougher sell.

That, and the mind-boggling technical collection capabilities we had at our disposal kind of got treated as silver bullets, I think, and lots of American powers that be (a couple of CIA directors, for example) invested heavily in them (fiscally and otherwise), sometimes at the expense of developing solid HUMINT (which can't be put into place overnight).

Poor obama. I understand and appreciate the donald trump jokes he made about decision making at the corespondent dinner.

Making decisions like firing gary busy... easy cheesy.

Making decisions like invading a country for someone's who's been a fugitive for 10 years without slam dunk evidence... whew boy.

Quote :
"Reports: Virginia Beach SEALs killed Osama bin Laden

In terms of elite military forces, it's hard to beat the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

The Virginia Beach-based outfit, more commonly known as SEAL Team Six, or DevGru, draws its ranks from select company: other U.S. Navy SEALs. Its missions are so secretive that not even the president talks about what the team does.

It appears an exception was made Sunday when President Barack Obama announced that U.S. special forces swarmed a mansion in Pakistan and killed Osama bin Laden, the man most associated with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks."

I do believe I have one member of the team that comes in my restaurant. He prefers to be called "a plumber" for the military. This guy is most modest, quick-witted, laid back, interesting guy I've ever met. He has seen more, put his life into more fucked up situations, has friends die that he can't tell you who they are or how they died. This dude knows so much top secret shit that ...when he's been drinking... you can tell it's eating up his brain and tearing into his soul. He was really drunk and told me a single story about one raid. I won't repeat it because it blew my fucking mind.

There was two words in the article I was reading explaining how Osama was shot ... and those same two words came up in that story he told me about a past incident.

He wants to tell me so bad the things in his head, and I know he needs to get it off his chest, but he isn't going to do that. This dude is a warrior.

His girlfriend is amazing. She has to put up with him when he goes insane from time to time. She apologizes profusely for his actions when "he's not himself" He's fucking scary when he's not himself. But I know exactly why he is not himself without knowing exactly why he is not himself. Other than the time to time explosions, he is the most down to earth dude in the world.

I read over what I just typed and it still doesn't even come close to justice describing this guy.
