Although he led Alabama to five consecutive NCAA tournament berths from 2002-2006 -- including a regional final appearance in 2004 -- he struggled late in his tenure and stepped down 19 games into the 2008-09 campaign. Moreover, North Carolina State hired Gottfried to replace the fired Sidney Lowe only after Arizona's Sean Miller and VCU's Shaka Smart indicated they were staying put. The decision to hire Gottfried widely was viewed as settling for someone. That criticism doesn't concern Gottfried. He relishes the chance to begin the next chapter of his career. "It's a program that has the potential to be as good as anybody in the country," he says. "That's the way I've always viewed it. Since I've been here, I think those things have been confirmed. I think we can be as good as anybody. There's no inherent reason why North Carolina State can't at some point in time be as good as anybody in the country." Gottfried's words should boost the confidence of a fan base that took plenty of hits during this coaching search. Although North Carolina State won national titles in 1974 under Norm Sloan and 1983 under Jim Valvano, the Wolfpack's recent struggles have led to debate over how good a job this is. Skeptics argue that the tremendous success of neighboring rivals Duke and North Carolina gives NC State fans unrealistic expectations. "People might say sometimes that it's a hard job," Gottfried says. "Show me an easy job. I don't care where it is. I don't know if there is an easy job. Everything's relative. For us, where we're located is an advantage. It's a plus. "There is no substitute for experience. We needed a builder, someone who could have the tenacity to stick with the building process when we hit the wall. That describes 'Coach G.' " NC State lately has hit the wall much too often. The Wolfpack reached the NCAA tournament in each of Herb Sendek's final five seasons as coach. But a portion of the fan base grumbled and Sendek eventually tired of the criticism and left for Arizona State after the 2005-06 season. NC State didn't receive an NCAA bid in any of Lowe's five seasons. Lowe signed three of the nation's top 37 prospects in the 2010 recruiting class, but the Wolfpack still struggled to a 15-16 finish that included a 5-11 mark in ACC competition this past season. The Wolfpack now must find someone to replace Tracy Smith, who led the Wolfpack with 14 points per game as a senior last season. The good news for Gottfried is that forward C.J. Leslie and guard Lorenzo Brown return from that heralded freshman trio, though point guard Ryan Harrow transferred to Kentucky. Gottfried also arrives at a time when the ACC is going through a down period. North Carolina probably will open the season atop the national rankings and Duke could crack the top five, but the league doesn't have much depth. North Carolina State ranked 11th in the league in scoring defense (70.5) and eighth in field-goal percentage defense (.424) last season. If the Wolfpack upgrade that defense, they could make a major move up the standings. falling back to the pack NC State has a proud history that includes national championships in 1974 and 1983, but the Wolfpack have advanced to the Sweet 16 just once and have posted a winning record in ACC competition only five times since Jim Valvano's departure after the 1989-90 season. Williams says. "Probably the most important thing he said is we're going to defend at all times. "He already has explained that he doesn't care who scores the ball. He just wants to make sure that if we need a defensive stop, he has people on the floor who are going to get it." Just as Gottfried wants his players to correct the weaknesses they showed last season, he also wants to make amends for the mistakes he made at his last coaching spot. His time away from the game gave him time to reflect on what he did right and what he did wrong at Alabama. He now believes he has a better sense of what it takes to build a winning program. "We did a lot of things well, and it's those things you build upon," Gottfried says. "And there were things we didn't do well. I didn't recruit nearly as well [as I could have]. I made mistakes in staff hires. All the mistakes I made, they're my responsibility -- nobody else's. That's one thing as head coach. The buck stops here." Gottfried doesn't need to look far to see how a coach can come back refreshed and rejuvenated after a few years off. Steve Lavin spent seven years as a TV analyst after getting fired at UCLA. He returned to coaching last season and promptly guided St. John's to its first NCAA tournament bid since 2002. Lavin and Gottfried worked together as assistants for Jim Harrick on UCLA's 1995 national championship team. As he prepares to launch his comeback, Gottfried takes comfort in Lavin's success story. He refers to himself and Lavin as "second-act coaches." "The experiences you have in that first act only make you better," Gottfried says. "I know Steve feels that way. I feel the same way. I feel more prepared and better prepared than I would have been. "Steve and I talk regularly about this. I've been able to draw on some of his wisdom and from other coaches as well. The important thing is to make sure you learn. What happens when you're out of coaching is you begin to learn what's really important -- your players, your staff, those who you work for day in and day out. You kind of get a better feel for how to spend your time wisely." The second act of Lavin's coaching career got off to a smashing start. Clothes were the primary items he and his wife had to pack for the 1,100-mile trip in their Chevrolet Suburban. That left plenty of room for Sun Drop. Fifteen cases, to be exact. The Southern soda wasn't yet available in the Midwest. "I'm a creature of habit," he said. Lutz remained loyal to his North Carolina roots throughout his 10-month stint with the Cyclones, and he's back in the comfort of his home state. He joined new N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried's staff in April, giving the Wolfpack an experienced assistant with strong recruiting ties and an in-depth understanding of the ACC landscape. For Lutz, who spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Charlotte before being fired last March, he can again visit family and friends with relative ease when he's not working to rebuild a once-proud program in Raleigh. "It's perfect as it can be," Lutz said. Hairy situation Lutz received an over-the-phone job offer from Gottfried while pacing in the parking lot of the Hair Connection barber shop in Conover, 45 miles northwest of Charlotte. Don Beal has been cutting his best friend's hair for nearly 40 years, an arrangement that dates back to Lutz's days as a basketball standout at Bandys High School in Catawba, and Lutz was in the shop with his father when he excused himself to field Gottfried's call. Even when Lutz was coaching at Iowa State, he worked in visits to the Hair Connection during trips home to see his father, who suffered a heart attack in February, and his mother, who has Alzheimer's disease. "It's just what best friends do," Beal said. That's not to suggest there haven't been rough patches. Beal says he's never met anyone who takes losses harder than Lutz, as evidenced by his behavior at Badin Country Club in 1992. Beal and Matt Doherty, then a young Davidson assistant, faced Lutz and fellow coach Don Hogan in a best-ball format. Lutz hooked his drive out of bounds on the final hole, and Beal finished with a better score thanks to a closing par. He hasn't beaten Lutz since. "When Bobby left, he was mad as hell, just furious," Beal said. "He didn't say bye. I'm like, 'Man, I just lost my best friend.' Three weeks later, he called and asked for a haircut like nothing happened." Homeward bound Before the opportunity at N.C. State arose, Lutz says his wife, Janet, planned to spend more time in the small N.C. town of Denver assisting her father-in-law with his recovery. Lutz visits regularly, making sure to stop in for a meal at Jones Fish Camp, a popular haunt since its opening in 1952. The move to Raleigh means Lutz eats more homecooked meals with his wife and two daughters. Natalie is in graduate school at North Carolina, and Christine decided to transfer from Kentucky to N.C. State in February, two months before the school hired her father. "It was absolutely the right move for me family-wise and professionally," he said. Family has always factored into Lutz's career choices. Clemson's Cliff Ellis hired him as a graduate assistant in 1984, and the Tigers upset eighth-ranked Georgia Tech on Jan. 8 of Lutz's first season. Two days later, his younger sister, Tammy, was killed in a car accident on the way to watch Clemson play host to N.C. State. Lutz, deciding he needed to be closer to his parents, left Clemson after two seasons. He became the head coach at Pfeiffer, a small college situated about an hour from Denver, and worked there for nine years. Gardner-Webb hired him in 1995, and he left two weeks later to join Charlotte's program as an assistant. The 49ers traveled to Clemson in 2008 and upset the 18th-ranked Tigers a day before the 23rd anniversary of Tammy's death. "I choose to remember the great times and want to remember her every day, if I can," Lutz said. "It inspires me, I think, to be a better person." Eye for talent When Class of 2012 point guard Tyler Lewis committed to N.C. State in October, he said Lutz was the first coach he called. Lutz offered Lewis a scholarship three summers ago, before his freshman year of high school. Either Lutz or former Charlotte assistant Rob Moxley, another newcomer to Gottfried's staff, attended every one of Lewis' summer games in 2008 and 2009. Lutz continued recruiting Lewis from Iowa, even stopping by Forsyth Country Day School on a few occasions. Lewis made it clear he didn't have much interest in the Cyclones, but he trusted Lutz and enjoyed chatting with him about the process of picking a school. "I think it's his personality," said Rick Lewis, Tyler's father. "He's a very positive person, and that will resonate with a lot of recruits and parents. He comes across as very genuine and honest." The Wolfpack coaches have made recruiting in-state players a priority, and they've succeeded by securing a commitment from Raleigh Word of God guard Torian Graham. T.J. Warren, who is transferring from Word of God to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, and Raleigh's Rodney Purvis are other Class of 2012 targets. Lutz's familiarity with the state where he's lived and worked almost exclusively is a valuable asset. "I have natural relationships with a lot of players and coaches," Lutz said. "It's been fun reacquainting myself with folks I haven't dealt with very much in the last year." That goes for players and coaches, friends and family alike. Back in North Carolina, the talent runs deeper and the Sun Drop tastes even sweeter. "
