anyways, I like this Austra album. don't care if they are a total Knife rip-off.

We have a larger music scene than Charlotte, but I still think some of you folks believe if you go outside RDU and front with talking about ...I dunno, fucking Whatever Brains or Cassis Orange or something...nobody's gonna know who you're talking about...I'd just hope people wouldn't associate being "big" in a music scene with talent of acts coming from the area. The talent that Cats Cradle, Kings, etc etc etc book from out of this area is easily as responsible for how "big" the scene is here. And back to my original point. We're bigger than Charlotte because they don't book shit here most of the time....RDU is, however, known for how pretentious it is with things like a "music scene." Exhibit A...

this dude is ramblingi am drunk, but i will list post-connells nationally-relevant raleigh artistsfuture islands (first because they are debatable to get it out of the way)rosebudsbon ivermegafaunlove languagebowerbirdsannualsbirds of avalonwhiskeytownscotty mccreery
5/22/2011 3:12:29 AM
some people won't like this, but I'm ok with adding Gayngs to that listyou also might be putting too much stock in the Annuals appearence on the old late night show however many years ago[Edited on May 22, 2011 at 3:33 AM. Reason : that too]
5/22/2011 3:25:59 AM
i understand annuals' place as it stands nowthe fact remains that they were on national broadcast television and were signed to sony
5/22/2011 3:42:19 AM
they were also an internet buzz band before there were internet buzz bandsand yes, I'm referring to the Timothys Weekend days
5/22/2011 3:50:25 AM
5/22/2011 7:19:29 AM
god, i never liked Annuals... still don't, in fact.not only was i not very fond of their music, but i actually had them tell a friend who was interviewing them say with a straight face how much more talented they were than Arcade Fire. (this was in between Funeral and Neon Bible).i lol'd. they were definitely a national name, though. full page spread in Spin in addition to the national tv coverage (the Love Language had one in there, too)

raleigh (with a slight extension to charlotte for the mere inclusion of the almighty brain f) currently has one of the best punk scenes on the planet. mad killer locals and 99% of good touring bands stop by. y'all some nerds, andrew birds.

Listening to the new Woods for the first time. Really diggin' it so far. Also into the new Thee Oh Sees
5/22/2011 12:19:13 PM
^ yay woods! i listened to all 6 of their lps in succession last night, and to my ear, sun and shade is easily the best. At echo lake is a bit more accessible but sun and shade has a higher quantity of really fucking good songs. i'm stoked about seeing them in asheville in august. their performance last year at hopscotch was mind-blowing
5/22/2011 12:29:15 PM
@vinylbandit: I don't really hate the Rosebuds. I just never really got into them. I was just being an asshole.
5/22/2011 3:32:07 PM
Can you really claim bon iver as a raleigh artist though? i thought justin vernon only lived there for like a year
5/22/2011 3:32:23 PM
After several listens, Erniefork gives the new Bon Iver a 6.1/10]

^ those sound about right^^ does anyone know who the raleigh girl who inspired 'For Emma' is?
5/22/2011 6:22:59 PM
[Edited on May 22, 2011 at 6:32 PM. Reason : also justin's fingers are all over a lot of triangle area recordings from 2006-2008]
5/22/2011 6:29:14 PM
^ interesting. it'd be strange to partially inspire such a huge record, although "emma" is actually the middle name of a high school sweetheart, right?

that album isn't all about her though, some other girl named Sara Emma Jansen or something like that
5/22/2011 7:12:53 PM
sure it isn't.[Edited on May 22, 2011 at 7:25 PM. Reason : oh. missed the "all" there.][Edited on May 22, 2011 at 7:26 PM. Reason : .]

cool-- thanks! dunno why i'm just now caring about these details. i've been obsessed with that album since 2008. anyone know more details about the break-up of DeYarmond Edison? Was it a personal thing or just them wanting to move in different music directions? Was it tense for the Megafaun guys to start working with Justin again or did they remain buds despite the break-up?
5/22/2011 7:44:28 PM
super tense
5/22/2011 7:57:55 PM
so one must assume, that broad has a really good personality, right?
5/22/2011 8:04:02 PM
A++++ on both of the above posts

^^that and she's got a really good voice and song-writing ability[Edited on May 22, 2011 at 11:13 PM. Reason : and justin's not exactly a looker himself][Edited on May 22, 2011 at 11:14 PM. I had no idea Justin Vernon's "Emma" is the Emma from Tender Fruit.
5/22/2011 11:18:22 PM
it's not. it's christy from the tenderfruit.

Really liking The Naked and Famous "Passive Me, Aggressive You." Released a while back in NZ but new to the US in March. new death cab for cutie is meh. too many sappy songs about zooey. also, 'monday morning' might be their all-time low
5/24/2011 12:28:42 AM
The new Cults is decent. Still can't get into the Bon Iver album. I like Michican't and Beth/Rest. Everything else seriously just puts me to sleep.
5/24/2011 12:44:16 AM
streamed like half of the cults album from npr.kinda wondering if there's going to be a black kids esque effect.[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 9:21 AM. Reason : ^holocene is the jam][Edited on May 24, 2011 at 9:21 AM. Reason : although it does kinda remind me of owen/american football or something]
5/24/2011 9:17:27 AM
wasn't feeling that Cults. after about song 3 every song sounded the same and it got pretty grating about halfway through.
5/24/2011 11:57:12 AM
A good 24 hours for Justin Vernon & Co. First Fallon and then:http://pitchfork.com/news/42622-gayngs-win-lawsuit-against-tour-bus-company/I was glad to hear this news.[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 12:47 PM. Reason : s]
5/24/2011 12:47:13 PM
yeah, not sure how i feel about the cults lp. i mean, i like their sound, but it definitely drags on by the second half of the album.new black lips is really good (somewhat surprisingly).
5/24/2011 3:01:56 PM
just now realizing how perfect of an intro Lisbon, OH is for Beth / Rest
5/25/2011 1:18:53 PM
5/25/2011 1:26:36 PM
^ yeh, i had not previously made that comparison, but upon re-listening i can definitely hear itside note: my girlfriend ordered a manic street preachers lp from amazon, and they accidentally shipped the american football lp with it. we got to keep it for free. i hadn't listened to it in years, and it has definitely withstood the test of time
5/25/2011 7:14:30 PM
I agree with what Tom Wizness said about Cults actually. But I think it's the first 4 songs. Damn, I was thinking this thing had potential. Now I don't even wanna buy it just for 4 songs...
5/25/2011 7:35:13 PM
manthis new my morning jacket is terrible
