We have a larger music scene than Charlotte, but I still think some of you folks believe if you go outside RDU and front with talking about ...I dunno, fucking Whatever Brains or Cassis Orange or something...nobody's gonna know who you're talking about...

I'd just hope people wouldn't associate being "big" in a music scene with talent of acts coming from the area. The talent that Cats Cradle, Kings, etc etc etc book from out of this area is easily as responsible for how "big" the scene is here. And back to my original point. We're bigger than Charlotte because they don't book shit here most of the time....

RDU is, however, known for how pretentious it is with things like a "music scene."

Exhibit A...

some people won't like this, but I'm ok with adding Gayngs to that list

you also might be putting too much stock in the Annuals appearence on the old late night show however many years ago

god, i never liked Annuals... still don't, in fact.

not only was i not very fond of their music, but i actually had them tell a friend who was interviewing them say with a straight face how much more talented they were than Arcade Fire. (this was in between Funeral and Neon Bible).

i lol'd. they were definitely a national name, though. full page spread in Spin in addition to the national tv coverage (the Love Language had one in there, too)

raleigh (with a slight extension to charlotte for the mere inclusion of the almighty brain f) currently has one of the best punk scenes on the planet. mad killer locals and 99% of good touring bands stop by. y'all some nerds, andrew birds.

^ yay woods! i listened to all 6 of their lps in succession last night, and to my ear, sun and shade is easily the best. At echo lake is a bit more accessible but sun and shade has a higher quantity of really fucking good songs. i'm stoked about seeing them in asheville in august. their performance last year at hopscotch was mind-blowing

you can read about it here:
http://www.indyweek.com/indyweek/christy-smiths-flotsam-and-krill-delivers-the-stunning-romantic-flipside-to-bon-ivers-for-emma-forever-ago/Content?oid=1610624

highlights:

Quote :
"Nearly two years before, she'd broken up with a boyfriend who was her chief musical collaborator; he'd moved out, moved on, and that boy, Justin Vernon, had gotten famous performing as Bon Iver. She could barely read a magazine or turn on her computer without another media outlet reminding her how their breakup had sent him into northern Wisconsin exile, where he made one of the decade's biggest singer-songwriter debuts, For Emma, Forever Ago. Eerily, back in Raleigh, she played drums on one of those songs, "Flume," and he played on some of her Tender Fruit songs, too, singing harmonies and adding guitars. But she was done with music, or so she thought. Smith's Flotsam & Krill—finally out now, after four years of fits and starts—is more than a companion piece to For Emma; rather, it's the other side of the same story and every bit as captivating.

"I felt silenced for a while," says Smith, pausing to gather her words at a picnic table just before midnight at the Carrboro bar Milltown. "At this point, I feel like Bon Iver's become legend now, and I'd be debunking some happy, warm story people want to believe. People want to believe Justin was hurt by this girl, who was a bitch. They want to believe this tragic, perfect, stoic figure stumbled off into the woods and came out with this album on this cloud. And in some ways, he did.""

Quote :
""It was living in a black-comedy musical. When he wrote 'Skinny Love,' we were on our couch in our underwear, eating Chinese food or whatever you do at home. He was like, 'I've got this song, and I think it might be one of the best songs I've ever written,'" she remembers. "He played it for me, and I was like, 'I know it's about me, but it's gold.' It's a song about him leaving me, but it's a beautiful song.""

cool-- thanks! dunno why i'm just now caring about these details. i've been obsessed with that album since 2008.

anyone know more details about the break-up of DeYarmond Edison? Was it a personal thing or just them wanting to move in different music directions? Was it tense for the Megafaun guys to start working with Justin again or did they remain buds despite the break-up?

Really liking The Naked and Famous "Passive Me, Aggressive You." Released a while back in NZ but new to the US in March. First single is "Young Blood" (sounds kinda MGMT-like)

side note: my girlfriend ordered a manic street preachers lp from amazon, and they accidentally shipped the american football lp with it. we got to keep it for free. i hadn't listened to it in years, and it has definitely withstood the test of time
