I did some digging around and found out that the halogens are cornering lights, they come on when you make turns apparently. The high beams are provided by the HIDs.

About to do my first oil change on the E90 ('09).Must I invest in one of those official kits, or will the manual-recommended Valvoline Synthetic and the K&N filter (which does have the gaskets) be sufficient?I ask because the kit costs basically twice as much. If it's really a measurable difference then what's the best source for buying a kit?
9/4/2012 9:17:05 AM
.......k. Guess I'll splurge for the kit.http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=AccessoryCatalog&siteid=214672&catalogid=4462&categoryid=104047&subcat1=&subcat2=&subcat3=&subcat4=&subcat5=For every forum poster out there that says "don't worry about it, Valvoline SynPower is fine if it's not MST," there's another that says "stick with the recommended."[Edited on September 6, 2012 at 12:28 PM. all bulbs that are not HID or LED are halogens
9/6/2012 12:38:40 PM
^^ Damn. Leith charged me $100 for an oil change on my 335i...not really saving any money there.
9/6/2012 1:05:33 PM
Only a few bucks. But I really enjoy doing oil changes, too. Beer, radio, garage, nothin better.
9/6/2012 2:03:34 PM
and you know it was done right... I've had so many cars fucked up royally by crappy garages... my jeep's flywheel shook the whole damn tranny apart after having someone put a clutch in it. my wife's car someone ground the pilot off the input shaft for the tranny because they couldn't get it aligned right (needless to say the clutch felt like shit and never felt completely engaged.and i have a friend who had her 328's oil changed and... opps they forgot to put oil back in it.... at the friggin dealer... on the 2nd ever oil change. and since the engine still ran they didn't even replace it.
9/6/2012 2:12:17 PM
^^^$150-200 in CA. $100 is a great price considering parts are $60.[Edited on September 6, 2012 at 2:16 PM. Reason : f]

Wyloch After how many miles are you changing your oil. Its been 7 months and 6k miles since I changed mine. The recommended is every 15k miles. which I think is too high.
9/6/2012 4:00:56 PM
Recommended is 15k which I never believed. There are 4500 left according to the computer. I'm thinking 7-8k will be my normal.
9/6/2012 7:37:20 PM
why?have a little over 11k since i bought the 530xi, haven't changed the oil yet.the jetta TDI that it replaced got an oil change every 10k. Convince me why changing oil more frequently than mfr recommendations is a good idea (for normal driving).
9/6/2012 8:41:49 PM
Well, fresh fluids is never a bad idea.
9/6/2012 8:57:30 PM
BMW's intervals have been 15k for years now. I honestly don't understand why anyone would change out their oil before that (especially only 1/2 way along) unless they are tracking their vehicle.
9/7/2012 8:41:28 AM
^ if you use the mfg's rated fluids, why would you second guess them? I can see tracking it and being more anal about it, but not for a dd'er.
9/7/2012 10:08:10 AM
I always do around 7-10k interval. Car just starts feeling slugish and "tired". It is not really sludge formation, but if you look at these pictures it is rather convincing to change oil earlier. BMWs lifetime fluids such as manual and auto tranny fluids are also another one that I totally don't believe.http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=287715

^^Why does your post look like you're arguing with me when you're actually agreeing with me?Is it just me or is the new 3 Series not selling well? I've seen like 3 since they came out and still haven't seen a single one around Raleigh.

Lol, for that much, you can get a real m3
9/18/2012 9:35:33 PM
I flagged it, based on doucheyness and false advertising. It does not look "exactly like" an M3, or really even all that close.

The piece of trim that surrounds the mirror in my passenger side sun visor cracked recently. In reading various forums, I think that I have to replace the entire visor instead of just this little piece of plastic. Does that sound right? Thanks in advance.

I've never seen such a complicated device that replaces something so simple. Motorized parking brakes have to be one of the most retarded things ever. And it's not hating on BMW. I'm hating on everyone that does it.I don't own a BMW so I can't really comment on your fluid changes. However the S2000's manual calls for replacing the rear diff fluid every 30k as well.[Edited on October 17, 2012 at 3:43 PM. Reason : k]

they used to be called emergency brakes... because the cable operation still functions when the hydraulic lines fail. Now... good luck stopping your car in an emergency with that shit.
10/18/2012 8:34:19 AM
10/18/2012 9:27:15 AM
When has an e-brake ever been used in that fashion? Also, good luck using it in that fashion on a car this heavy. Car's have been using electronic and hydraulic actuated parking brakes for years now. Hell, BMW had an electronic parking brake over 10 years ago that used small plastic gears that were prone to strip.
