looks like windows backup was the first culprit i've found so far..
6/15/2009 1:08:59 PM
check your system logs when it happens. Windows Backup doesn't lock your system, though you might see a little disc access latency. In any case it sounds like a pretty serious bug.
6/15/2009 6:02:59 PM
I think it's related to the ultramon replacement program I'm using. Driving right now so I can't look it up but symptoms started around when I installed it and it maxxes out the CPU sometimes when it happens or right before
6/15/2009 6:06:52 PM
My firewire is dreadfully slow. That's my only hardware issue so far... until I try my crummy Pinnacle USB TV stick

Suggestion:the search bar on the start menu doesn't work very well. for example if i'm looking for absoluteTelnet and search for telnet it won't find it. plz to fix this noen? [Edited on June 18, 2009 at 10:56 AM. Reason : oops]
6/18/2009 10:44:02 AM
displayfusion was def my problem. uninstalled it and no issues at all anymore with all the freezing up and shit. sucks.. i liked how well it worked. ah well
6/22/2009 10:09:10 AM
^^uh, unless it's in a non-indexed location, I have no idea why it wouldn't show up.Windows search is freaking amazing for me, one of the best improvements I've seen.
6/22/2009 4:32:50 PM
So what are the options for Blu-ray & HD DVD support? No native support, so we'll have to get a Windows 7 compatible version of PowerDVD or WinDVD?
6/23/2009 12:35:40 PM
6/23/2009 12:38:59 PM
are you on 7000 or 7100? i've heard issues with internal builds, but not the official beta & rc
6/23/2009 12:46:44 PM
7100
6/23/2009 12:49:49 PM
6/23/2009 2:43:20 PM
does it really need windows search to just look for shit in the start menu?q
6/23/2009 3:06:30 PM
It's a unified service. So yes.
6/23/2009 5:11:15 PM
the indexer service is pretty lightweight this time around. Altho one thing that was bugging me:Im current still running beta1 cause im lazy. When hit start and then start typing a url, it doesn't show me URLs from my IE history. If I open IE and start typing the same url in the address bar results show up like they should. Are web browser results supposed to show up in the start menu search? If not they should cause its annoying to have to type out full urls every time.
6/23/2009 5:18:06 PM
How does it find things if I spell out the beginning of the name then? Seriously..I know nothing about how it works and I'm not at a computer to look it up
6/23/2009 5:22:52 PM
Man, that new search thing that came as some suggestion on automatic updates (for XP) was so terrible I ended up reformatting the system. The process was always maxing out the CPU and keeping the disks rolling. Don't know what it was attempting to do (create the initial index I guess) but it never finished, even after leaving it for a weekend.Hope they fixed that, or made it optional. I do a search maybe twice a year. Nothing worth eating up resources to keep some unused process running.
6/23/2009 5:29:46 PM
You can turn it off in eithe OS. In the 7000 build it worked beautifully for me but in 7100 it acted like what you're describing. Ah well..it's cool when it works right. Hopefully it does for me in the final release
6/23/2009 5:39:36 PM
Windows search was completely overhauled from the ground up for Win7. NO more cpu spiking, no more system slowdowns, no more disk churning.Whatever happened to you ScHpEnXeL, I would bet damn near anything that you did something wacky as shit to cause that to happen. I use it religiously and have a SHIT TON of files that are regularly changing. And I've not heard a whisper of any problems of that sort internally or externally.
6/23/2009 6:29:19 PM
Having a hell of a time trying to get my eSata working w/ hot plugging. MB is supposed to support it, but it might just be supporting it terribly. I got a $30 pci-e card to try out, we'll see if that works.
6/23/2009 11:25:28 PM
any ideas?
6/24/2009 12:08:55 AM
install powerdvd or windvd
6/24/2009 3:39:04 AM
I'm looking to build a new computeris win7 worth waiting for? or should I go with vista?I hear vista sucks.
6/24/2009 4:38:50 AM
7.
6/24/2009 8:03:24 AM
^^just go with the RC of 7. it's 10x better than vista even without being the official final version.[Edited on June 24, 2009 at 8:36 AM. Reason : and it's free!]
6/24/2009 8:36:25 AM
wowI'm going to have to read over this thread at some pointany downside other than it being beta?
6/24/2009 2:05:30 PM
It's not beta, it's the RC. Downside is you will have to upgrade within a year to the full version.
6/24/2009 2:48:12 PM
would that require a reformat or what?I've never changed an OS, always just got a new one when I got a new computer
6/25/2009 12:21:26 AM

not sure if this has been posted in here yet, but if you're like me and still running the beta, you're gonna be boned come Wednesdayi found something called TimerNuke (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/30/timernuke-crack-free-download-to-disable-activation-of-windows-7-and-server-2008/) that says it'll stop ithopefully it'll hold me over in the interim before 7 is officially released[Edited on June 27, 2009 at 12:03 PM. question about ^ran it on a coworkers computer earlier today. says it finished fine but it's still saying it expires tomorrow. is it screwed tomorrow or is it just going to keep working or what??
6/30/2009 6:50:52 PM
^^ hopefully they come up with something like that for RC1 but still allow it to apply all the updates to make it the same as the eventual RTM version
6/30/2009 10:07:01 PM

7/1/2009 8:11:57 AM

So how do the upgrade versions work? I have legit versions of XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. Do the upgrade versions require that I insert one of my old CDs to validate that I had a legit license of XP or Vista?

7/1/2009 11:01:20 PM

i haven't really kept up with this thread so sorry if it's already been discussedi've got win7 RC on my media server and it doesn't want to let me save files anywhere other than my home folder. in the last 2 days i've tried to save files to c:\ and c:\inetpub\wwwroot and it complained at me to contact an administrator. my account is an admin account so i don't know what the problem is. anybody know what's going on?edit: google says it's a Notepad must be run as Administrator problem. Guess I forgot to disable UAC. hopefully this will fix it[Edited on July 16, 2009 at 10:50 AM. Reason : .]
7/16/2009 10:29:47 AM
^^any particular reason you guys are spending the extra $50 for pro? I don't see much of an advantage this time around (compared to the differences in Vista and XP).
