When I interviewed for a 'lead' wireless network engineering position at google (mountain view), they were only paying 180k at the top end. I wasn't interested in moving there for that salary. The cost of living is so high, you really have to double your salary from the RDU area just to thread water. Then deal with mother fucking traffic. If the average tech position is paying 250k in the bay area, I wasn't seeing it at google or most of the other places I was looking at.To top it off, the fuckers at google wouldn't give me a range, after I repeatedly told the recruiter that if they wanted me, it was going to have to be a balls out offer. I used glassdoor.com to get some insight.I am sure that played a part in not progressing through the interview process after a technically superior interview, but in fairness, I just wanted them to offer me so I could turn it down and use it for leverage.They would not give me feedback on the interview, then had the audacity to send me a survey. ^^ roughly same experience with them, but what I understand is the stock is where you make that up to the high ranges. If you have a negotiating position and they want you then you can expect a huge stock package.There is definitely a $20k premium on just housing in the bay. When I was there I paid 2x what I was paying in Raleigh and I think it'd be 3x at this point. The company I work for has a bonus program, but there hasn't been a bonus since 2009. LOL. Yet they continue to use that as a recruiting tool to lure people in at a lower salary than what I think is average here in RTP area. To be fair though, we've been bought out twice, but now we're part of a business unit within a multi-billion dollar company, still no bonuses and raises were limited last year to a 3% cap and that's if you were a top performer. I like the flexibility I have at work. My hours aren't really tracked, and they don't care what I do as long as I get projects done. I get plan of record time on side projects that I design to improve internal processes. However, with all of that, I do think the pay is kinda low - at least for the level that I'm at. If I could find a similar work environment with more $, then that would be great. I'm just a hair above 75K. Currently doing software QA and making custom automation to test proprietary OS, multiple languages involved. Been doing that since 09. ^,^^ all the positions I've looked at or been recruited for in the bay area were 150-250k. however, I've been able to demand the same or higher numbers on the east coast with the right companies. I haven't used codewars yet, but an old coworker that got a job at Amazon used it. I really like leetcode over hacker rank, mainly because of not having to print things to stdout and the way it handles test cases. A lot of the hackerrank ones you end up having to do a lot of setup yourself to even get to the problem.

I usually take the last 10-15 minutes to verbally give the candidate my pointers on how they can improve... I hope they've taken it to heart.It's a pretty great platform for calibrating your eye for talent.

When you mentioned mid senior, I mistakingly interpreted that as a senior level developer who had been a senior level for a while(mid-range). It sounds like you actually meant mid level OR senior level based on the experience range you mentioned. I’d say 90-130 is pretty accurate given the additional information you provided. Of course there will always be outliers as well as other variables that come into play, like do you work at a profitable company, are there other parts of the compensation package other than money, etc.

^ I talked to a couple recruiters here recently and sounds like 140-150 range. And not a lot of those positions come open either. I'd get recruiters reaching out to me a couple times a week for those roles and higher in NYC. Feels like I could give my info to every recruiter in RTP and they wouldn't have anything interesting for me except a few times a year. I think whenever it's time to move on from the job I just took it's gonna be a remote only search or start my own thing in town.

Kinda feel like working for a Raleigh-based company these days is leaving cash on the table outside of a few regional outliers. Distributed/remote work is so prolific now that you can just shoot for those jobs and look for a Bay Area salary. It's more work, but it does pay off.Remote work has its downsides, though. I've yet to see a company that has really figured out remote communication, and frankly, it's just less fun than working in an office (IMO). Of course, avoiding the commute and having more flexible hours has plenty of upsides, so it probably comes down to personal preference and life situation.
