Wow, talk about a lot of bullshit. If ANY semi-automatic firearms gets fired a lot and the firing pin becomes caked up with grime, there's the potential for misfires and slamfires. SKS's are notorious for having slamfire issues that chew up entire magazines.
4/11/2008 5:21:51 PM
has anyone ever dealt with Young Guns in Apex? i was looking around for a kimber and noticed that they are one of the closer dealers. They had pretty good prices just from talking to them on the phone but just wanted to know if anyone else on here had any experience with them.
4/11/2008 5:51:33 PM
I have only bought ammo from them but they were pretty cool.
4/11/2008 7:04:30 PM
^^^ This is why with any semiautomatic weapon I load the magazine with two rounds and fire them before putting a full mag in there. Do this every range session.
4/11/2008 8:34:50 PM
If you want to hold a GSG-5, PDHSC has one.
4/12/2008 9:35:42 PM
^^ Worst thing is that a semi-automatic firearm is more likely to have this condition not when you first start shooting, but more likely as you go on shooting. For a cosmoline locked firing pin on an SKS, that's an issue of not cleaning it the first time though. For most other semi-autos it's more likely to fail when it gets gummed up with grime from powder residue.
4/12/2008 9:57:56 PM
^ true, but alot of people don't clean their sks bolt group on a regular basis or at all (on the account of how hard it is to disassemble). Its also possible that, if you do clean your weapon on a regular basis you still could get a slamfire at the beginning, perhaps if you don't install the firing pin right or you bend it so it will stick in the fire position. Or if you shoot a different batch/make of ammo that has a 'softer' primer.[Edited on April 13, 2008 at 1:25 AM. Reason : ]
4/13/2008 1:23:14 AM
^usually, I shoot Wolf, and they have hard primers. If you suspect a weapon would slamfire, Wolf is a good ammo to shoot.
4/13/2008 1:38:10 AM
Regardless of how clean the firing mechanism in a semiauto is, there's still the chance of a bump fire.A friend of mine's got a AR-15 that has a light trigger pull and a short reset. If you pull gently at all you'll get a 3 round burst. Is the ATF going to convict every guy on youtube who's bumpfired a semiauto just for fun?Ridiculous...
4/13/2008 9:22:43 PM
Bump firing is different because that actually one trigger pull per shot fired.
4/13/2008 10:31:42 PM
Right, but my point is the trigger mechanism in that dude's AR is made for one pull, one fired round. How does the ATF know if it was bump fired, if the mechanism is faulty, or if it's a true class iii gun?The news clip said "no illegal guns were found."How could he be charged with transfering a class iii weapon if they didn't find an illegal gun? While class iii guns aren't illegal, if he really did own one then he would be owning it illegally...making it an illegal gun.I think the ATF is screwing themselves over on this one.
4/13/2008 11:15:28 PM
The ATF isn't screwing themselves. It is there job to be big pricks about guns and such. The are a money-maker for the government. They just make a big stink about a lot of little shit all the time and collect taxes. If the gun was just dirty causing it to go auto, then he had a machine gun. If he lent that to someone, he did an illegal transfer. If it jammed from being dirty, it was probably cleaned after the trip to the range making it no longer a machine gun.You can't really argue the rules against the ATF because they make the rules.
4/13/2008 11:35:00 PM
i was in pdhsc the other day and noticed they also had a g18. apparently it was pretty new cause when talking about it with someone else one of the guys behind the counter said you couldnt rent it yet. still looks pretty silly though.
4/14/2008 9:30:36 PM
No, it wasnt a machine gun, it was a malfunction. He will win on appeal.
4/14/2008 9:33:06 PM
i remember shooting the mp5 at personal defense.twas pretty awesome
4/14/2008 9:53:08 PM
i shot the glock machine pistol, that was weird, but nice. made me want one.looks like something from resident evil.
4/14/2008 11:49:48 PM
getting ready to build up an arordered my pre-assembled upper yesterday from del-tonnow i just have to wait until the gun show to pick up my lower, i'll post pics once i get it together
4/19/2008 1:22:56 PM
Which upper did you go with?I want one of Del-ton's 16" midlength flattop with carry handle.
4/19/2008 2:49:42 PM
I went with the 16" m4 kit with a flat top upper w/o the carry handle, i did add the yhm 4-rail free float handguard so i would have plenty of room for accessories. With tax+shipping on everything I will come out ~$700 before I even look at optics. Thank God for coops or i wouldnt be able to even think about buying this.[Edited on April 19, 2008 at 8:27 PM. Who has experience with Springfield M1As? I've got a friend looking to get one and I haven't heard much about them.
4/22/2008 12:27:49 PM
I think Fulton is better but Springfield is still pretty damn good.
4/22/2008 6:16:21 PM
Fulton should be good for the price, almost like comparing a Wilson Combat 1911 to a Springfield Mil-Spec.
4/22/2008 6:40:57 PM
Anyone know anything about the Ruger Mini-14s? I've heard mostly good things, but some mixed reviews. Also, are they powerful enough for deer hunting? I've heard no, but people use .243s pretty regularly.
4/23/2008 12:22:22 AM
The M1A is the commercial and non selective fire version of the venerable M14 of Vietnam fame. An excellent battle rifle. You would be hard pressed to buy a rifle that fills the role better. The military still has M14s in service as sniper rifles (designated marksman?) in Iraq and Afganistan. They were also used for competition for many years in 1000yd matches. If you have the $$ you will have a lifetimes woth of rifle. The mini 14 is similar in appearance to the M1A, just scaled down. they are very reliable but carry a stigma of not being accurate compared to an AR series rifle. They are accurate enough for deer hunting at sensible ranges, but the .223 is thought to be on the light side of things for longer shots on whitetail. It can still be used but you will have to be more selective with your shot placement. A friend keeps a mini14 on his tractor to regulate deer populations with good results. The new 6.8 SPC is offered in a mini 14 and delivers a heavier bullet and would help on the deer side of things.

I could use some advice...I want to buy a shotgun, purely for home-defense. I have been looking at a Mossberg 590 12 guage but I am worried that if it came to it, my girlfriend would not be able to handle it if she had to. She has a little experience with guns (she is a country girl)...do you think I should go with a 20 guage instead?
4/23/2008 8:22:35 AM
u could always take here down to personal handgun self defense and have her shoot a shot gun down there to see if she can handle it. i know they have a shotgun "range," i dont know if they have shotguns to rent but i would assume so.anyways isn't important that you can handle it...or are you out of town THAT much that she really needs to be able to shoot it?have her try it out somewhere, i bet she can do it
4/23/2008 8:43:11 AM
I am not gone all that much, I would just feel a lot more comfortable with it in the house if I knew she could properly use and handle it. So you think the difference between the two isnt so much that it will matter to her?
4/23/2008 9:05:34 AM
well if you are going to expect her to shoot either i'd get her to try a couple. sure a 20gauge will kick less...but i bet she could at least handle a 12ga with target load. but u never know until you have her try.]

4/23/2008 10:23:31 AM
imo, deer hunting with less than a .243 (even that's too small for me) is unethical. just a breeze makes the difference between a deer in the truck and an injured deer deep in the woods that you'll never find.just get a 30-30. that won't break the bank.
4/23/2008 2:09:11 PM
The Ruger Mini-14 also comes in 7.62x39 (called the Mini-30).I'd pick that over a Mini-14, but your range would still be limited and hunting ammo selection is limited. With a soft point it should be comparable to a 30-30Win or a little better.I wouldn't mind having a Mini, but I'd do some work to it.They have a bad reputation for accuracy, mostly due to the thin barrel that isn't bedded well or floated.Wood stocked Rugers in general have poor bedding.
4/23/2008 4:19:51 PM
great. thanks. that is a good idea.
4/23/2008 4:58:37 PM
4/23/2008 6:57:16 PM
I have enjoyed shooting a friends Ruger Mini-14 over any AR-15 I have shot.
4/23/2008 7:54:41 PM
anyone know how easy it is to convert a standard saiga 7.62 to something with a pistil grip? a local gun shop is selling them new for $300, which comes with at least 1 30round mag...is that a decent deal? how much do mak-90s/ak variants go for at the gun show?
4/25/2008 10:39:05 AM
I think so,the siagas are a little nicer than the ones with the military style furniture. there are several gun boards that can answer your question about the stock, I think the difference is the tangs where the stock attaches.

4/28/2008 10:26:38 AM
Anyone got the lowdown on ammo prices over at the Dixie Gun and Knife show this weekend? Walmart on Harrison in Cary was all out of 9mm except 250 ct. boxes of UMC. No Blazer and no WWB. Are there any local reloaders over there with reasonable prices? Or are there usually good deals for bulk?Soon I'm going to have to buy a Dillon Progressive or start selling unneeded body parts...
4/28/2008 6:36:19 PM
Georgia Arms is usually at the Raleigh shows. I've bought several hundred rounds through them and only had an issue with 2. They were .40s with dented cases. Price is usually pretty good too.
4/28/2008 9:21:30 PM
I am pretty sketchy when it comes to reloads but have had great luck with the Georgia Arms .44 Magnum loads.
4/28/2008 9:29:42 PM
blazer brass in 9mm is crap, so much so that wal-mart sent a notice to the distributor.i'd be worried about damage to you and your firearm.wal-mart in garner has the largest selection of ammo that i know of.

how does one go about buying a gun when he's from a different country?ive got a friend who's from england, been here for like 6 years, maybe 7.wants to purchase a pistol. i remember a while back my cousin tried to purchase a shotgun from the gun show, they attempted a background check on him and they said he couldnt buy one because he was from another country (although he's been in US for like 16-17 years) but i dont remember if they said he would need more background checks or what.
4/28/2008 10:36:15 PM
Can anyone tell me anything about the Kimber pro carry 2?
4/28/2008 10:47:02 PM
It's a 1911. [Edited on April 28, 2008 at 11:58 PM. Reason : Seriously...should be a good gun. Don't use chip mccormick mags in aluminum frames]
4/28/2008 11:57:04 PM
Thanks for the suggestions on Georgia Arms. Their online prices seem to be higher than WWB at WallyWorld but maybe they'll have some deals at the show. I need an excuse to go anyway.Seotaji - If you don't like Blazer than you'll probably think I'm an idiot for shooting Wolf through my pistols (without a problem to date except that it's dirty and smells funny). Most people say they've run many thousands of Blazer with no problems. Of course there is this one guy over at the Sig forum... This notice to the distributor, was it just for you or was there a larger problem? I like the blazer but I'd hate to shoot it if it's unsafe.

Does it piss anyone else off when films show someone in a standoff cocking a double action pistol for dramatic effect?I'll be honest, I'm watching Submerged with Steven Seagal on USA right now.
4/29/2008 3:03:49 AM
As far as buying pistol ammo in the common calibers, you're almost always going to be hard pressed to beat Wal-Mart. I have another source that occasionally has 9mm, .40, or .45 at bargain (for this day and age) prices, but I can't tell everyone everythingI've shot thousands of rounds of Georgia Arms stuff in the past in several calibers. Good, consistent, high-quality stuff. I've seen their hunting loads in 30.06 and .270 outshoot factory Federal Premium and Winchester Supreme several times. I seldom buy any of it anymore however because I now have started to roll my own and would rather spend the money on components and powder.
4/29/2008 9:39:29 AM
I'm thinking about picking up an over/under for wingshooting sometime in the next year. I'm leaning towards a 16 or 20 gauge (but have no problems with a 12), and somewhere around $1000 (though I'll go higher for an exceptional deal). Any suggestions? Right now two of the leading contenders are the Ruger Red Label and the Browning Citori.]
