I did the marine Corp 10k and it was awesome. My shoes are dead but I got new oasics for my birthday and a Nike running watch (has the chip for my shoes). Cannot wait to get out there again. Goal is to be doing olympic length triathlons come this summer
11/7/2010 12:13:06 PM
^ AWESOME and holy crap olympic tris - you are cray cray i'd like to do a sprint tri but i dunno about anything after that. maybe if the swimming was the long part instead of the running haha.my next goal is to finish in like 2:30 - 2:45 for my next 1/2 in jan. i think that is doable considering i didn't train at ALL over the past 8ish weeks for this one. aside from some light jogging, but no distance or anything. stupid torn quad. but my leg felt fine today so...i think i am good to go!
11/7/2010 12:18:28 PM
Sweet! Me too! I wanted to do the full, but post-marathon recovery sucks. Prob would be too sore to teach fitness classes for a week. You'll love the Disney half. Gorgeous scenery. You run through Cinderella's castle!!!Let me know if you need any hotel/park discounts and I'll see what I can do.
11/7/2010 12:24:02 PM
ohhhh! that'd be awesome! i need to start researching hotels and such. and i've heard good things about disney so i'm pretty excited. i'm trying to see if the boyfriend will run it with me, but i'm guessing the answer to that is NO haha. oh well he is still coming with and we'll hopefully hit up some of the theme parks and make a vacay out of it!
11/7/2010 12:32:07 PM
did the city of oaks half this morning as well. pulled in a 1:50, which is a bit better then i expected. had a cold all week, and drove to clemson to watch state come up short, only to drive back for the run. so glad i had that extra hour of sleep... probably the only way i could have done it. congrats, [user]khcaldwal[/user], and to all who completed it this morning. MUCH, much better weather this morning as opposed to last year, in spite of the cold (no rain!).[Edited on November 7, 2010 at 2:36 PM. Reason : tags...]

I'm going light on running for the next month to focus on work in the weight room, but then I'm aiming for the Napa Valley Marathon on March 6 as my next big goal. I've done halfs before but this would be my first full marathon, and I'm just not sure if my knee joints will be able to do it. But if I'm successful with the marathon, then I kick training into high gear, because after that comes the Vineman full ironman-distance triathlon.
11/7/2010 2:50:31 PM
^^ wow that is AWESOME. thanks - congrats to you too! i was happy to finish in 3 hours haha but for my next 1/2 i hope to do 2:30 - 2:45. because this time i'll actually be consistently training (w/ no 8 week breaks haha). i can't imagine doing better than that haha. but maybe someday!! i was honestly just happy to finish. i really wanted to just give up last night and not even run but now that i did it, i feel so much better about myself and what i can do. i really like how running can do that for you! though there were times DURING the race i wanted to absolutely die. i did pretty well pacing myself i think. my first leg was much better than my last leg haha. i was doing like 13:15 min miles (slow, i know) and by the end i was almost at 14. when i went across the first timing thing i was so pumped about how i was doing...cause i was on pace to finish in like 2:40ish...but i kinda fell off shortly after that and started going downhill (IE i think i walked a mile in there lol) ^ THAT is impressive. i don't think i ever EVER want to do a full, but i'd like to get into doing 1/2s and other races that are shorter. maybe a sprint tri eventually. good luck
11/7/2010 5:06:04 PM
Heh, it's not impressive when I haven't done it yet.
11/7/2010 5:12:29 PM
yes it is! haha. i'd never even attempt to do it - so it is impressive to meeee
11/7/2010 5:16:32 PM
Anyone know a good spot to run at night near the NC State area / southwest Raleigh / eastern Cary?Daylight savings ended, so my after-work run at the lake is no longer feasible until March or so. I'm looking for something like an lighted outdoor track, or maybe a nice well-lit subdivision that can be made into a loop and I can measure the distance. Anyone willing to share their spot with me?I'm not a student anymore so I can't use the indoor track at Carmichael, and I enjoy running outdoors whenever possible so I don't feel like joining a gym and using a treadmill. Thanks for any advice you could share with me.
11/7/2010 7:15:27 PM
anybody use the under armour coldgear hood? Specifically, thoughts on using it with the upper "hood" portion actually down, so it's just the neck/chin/lower face that is covered.I am interested in giving it a shot, as I can barely breath in the 30 degree weather we're having in the mornings (especially with the wind I get running right along the river).
11/7/2010 7:37:31 PM
I finished today in 2:04:52 (chip time) got there a bit late, so it was a running start. Would have liked to go faster but I was in a herd of people for the first 2 miles and the lower glenwood south hill, to peace street and all the way to h-boro portion killed me. Hill after hill after hill really took it out of me. Not at all my best time, but its the coldest weather ive ever run in and I was happy to finish with a reasonable time. Congrats to all of those who finished!
11/7/2010 8:14:18 PM
same with me. fucking hills were brutal AND the first 3-4 miles were so slow with so many people walking. they need to send folks out in small waves to fix that next year. i did well until until the turaround then i just lost my pace. finished in 1:58 but for a long time i was on pace for 1:45ish which would have been sweet.
11/7/2010 9:24:56 PM
i lost my pace too. you guys were running way faster than me but i was on pace to finish in about 2:30 or so (prob 2:40 had i kept close to my initial pace...i knew i'd go slower on the last half but i REALLY died more than i expected and lost my pace)then i just totally lost it at the turn around. i wanted to die that whole hillsb. street part until i got back to pullen. oh well. without having done physical activity in 8 weeks due to injury, i guess i was proud of myself. i mean, i totally am proud of myself. even if i had finished in 4 hours i would have been happy haha. i'm not a runner to begin with and i really wanted to quit about mile 8 haha. i was sooooo over it. really hoping to do my next half in 2:30 though. i am le tired now. it was an accomplishment to finish but i def walked from mile 7 to 8 which screwed up my time...next time i want to run the ENTIRE way. it is just so hard for me to keep up that mental stamina though! i don't know how you guys do it. how DO you do it? the hardest part of distance running for me is the mental part, not the physical part. i guess i'm just a big baby.
11/8/2010 12:19:50 AM
Ya'll did awesome! I was helping at the Arby's (mile 10/23) water station!
11/8/2010 9:22:18 AM
^ THANKS i was so thankful for the volunteers. oh my god i would have died without the volunteers. and i would *NOT* have wanted to be out there in the cold early on a saturday morning volunteering. so thank you so much. i seriously would have died without you!
11/8/2010 11:56:35 AM
The half was fun. I enjoyed it and boy was it a cold start!I look forward to hopefully doing the full next year!
11/8/2010 12:14:00 PM
i think i might do the turkey trot (@ Ridgewood shopping center to benefit the MS society) on thanksgiving morning. its an 8K. has anyone done it before??
11/8/2010 11:08:01 PM
i did it last year. very casual atmosphere. lots of walkers / kids / way out of shape folks that slow it down. if you are running for a time you will be pissed but if you are just running for some fun so you can eat more at lunch, it is awesome. i may do it again.....
11/8/2010 11:55:44 PM
oh yeaaa. sad i was gonna run for a time. not to like win cause i'd never be in the top 3 of my age group but yea i kinda wanted to be timed and see how i could do
11/9/2010 12:02:02 AM
you can get timed. they do that. it is just pretty slow with all the peeps
11/9/2010 12:06:49 AM
first 5k on sunday in 19:55.it was a cold morning and I am feeling like I got a cough or something from the run.
11/9/2010 12:06:54 AM
just get up front if you're that worried about your time. how is this different from any other race? it's fun.[Edited on November 9, 2010 at 1:59 PM. Reason : .]
11/9/2010 1:59:11 PM
well luckily i'm not super worried about my time because i'm slow but i'd like to do my 8K in 45 - 50 minutes. i know, i'm freaking slow, but that is good for me. i'm trying to get back in shape i remember in high school when i could run a mile in under 7 minutes and average in the 7s for multiple milesTHOSE WERE THE DAYS! never let yourself get out of shape, people!!!
11/9/2010 7:34:31 PM
Do you burn more calories in cold or warm weather...or it's all the same?Doing 9 miles with a crew who's training for the St. Judes.
11/13/2010 9:01:33 PM
anybody do the OBX half or full marathon today?i did it in 1 hr 37 min. it was my first half marathon. i wish i went out a lot faster because i was feeling great today. biggest race i've been a part of. loved it.
11/14/2010 6:15:47 PM
geez. that is freaking awesome!!! congrats!
11/14/2010 6:23:00 PM
Did Old Reliable 10k today. I havnt run in 6 months. Went to support a friend and ended up psyching myself up enough to try it at least. I do bike daily and around campus so Im in decent shape but slightly different muscle groups. I still dont know how I finished that thing...Finished right at an hr.
11/14/2010 7:47:59 PM
^ good job!!!!! i didn't know that was happening today, i would have liked to have done that. although i ran a 1/2 marathon coming off an injury that had me out for 8 weeks last sunday. so that probably wouldn't have been wise considering i felt sore in my weak leg until like wednesday how do you guys find out about these things? word of mouth? or is there like a listserv or something i can join that sends out reminders of triangle (or NC area) races??i want to do the turkey trot 8k. i think i'm going to sign up this week. trying to force the BF to do it with me haha.
11/14/2010 7:52:01 PM
I just got in from running a hr and half, I normally do 1 hour a day 6 days a week, I missed friday so I made up for it this weekend. I need something like aea posted when it is sooooooooooo cold and it is windy. However, I dont want something that is tight and I dont want people thinking I am running to escape the police...lolI am in NOVA and during the the monster snow storm last winter I still ran at work....they cleaned the place up very fast (the people they contract out with were there when it was pouring down snow trying to clean it up, that was a pretty much FAIL until the snow stopped) and although we were closed, the sidwalk was pretty much ice free so I just ran around the complex. Even thought I live right down the road, getting there (walking) was the biggest challenge with 30" + of snow and the plows making it even deeper.[Edited on November 14, 2010 at 8:19 PM. Reason : w]

I ran the OBX Marathon today. It was my first race over the distance of 5k, haha. I was severely under-trained, but I finished. Felt very strong at the 13.1 mile mark (1:55), but around mile 18 my calfs completely locked up and I had to basically run/walk the last 8 miles. Ended up finishing the whole thing in 4:42. Those last few miles really screwed me....could only run about 20 meters before my legs felt like they were going to lock up and i'd have to stop/stretch/walk.I finished though!! My girlfriend also beasted the OBX half marathon. This was her first race ever...never even ran a 5k.^^Kadwackl, check out Endurance Magazine. It's free, and distributed at most local running stores (Fleet Feet, Athlete's Foot, Bull City Running). They have a pretty comprehensive listing of local events.[Edited on November 14, 2010 at 11:23 PM. Reason : .]

thanks!and congrats on the marathon. damn. that is great
11/14/2010 11:59:01 PM
@khcadwal:For shorter races, http://www.halfmarathons.net/ is a really good resource. They have a calendar, or you can also search by state. Their listings are also pretty thorough at listing other race distances being held in the title, so it's easy to see if there's a 10K, 5K, etc offered as well. For marathons, http://www.marathonguide.com/ is the most exhaustive site I've found. They only list the official name of the event in the title linked on the calendar, so it's best used just for marathons.
11/15/2010 12:20:18 AM
thanks!!!! perfect i'm only interested in 1/2s and under so that is awesome. thank you.
11/15/2010 12:27:03 AM
aea did you get the hood thing? it's been brutal out lately and i'm thinking about getting something to help cover my face.also - anyone have experience/advice with changing your breathing? i'm a mouth breather when i run and i've been trying to get better about breathing through my nose some, just can't get myself to do it.
12/14/2010 11:14:49 AM
^ indeed! I've only used it a handful of times since it arrived, but it is definitely worth investing in. We (my husband uses one as well) have used them for snowboarding too. It ventilates well, protects from the wind, and the adjustment between the full hood/mask to the mask or gaiter alone is easy.
12/14/2010 2:35:28 PM
awesome - it was the UA one you got? They have it at Dick's and I have a 20% off coupon I need to use...
12/14/2010 2:55:31 PM
^most ski shops sell the neoprene one that just covers your lower portion of your face (i call it my hello clarice mask aka hannibal lecter). i use it pretty regularly when its cold out, but having an all in one like the above UA seems ideal. they work fine, you can breath through them easily enough and i find it helps me run faster because i want to exhale more to keep the mask warm (less CO2 build up etc)i havent run more than 3 miles a couple times a week since the Marine Corps Marathon on 10/31, and my body is really thanking me for it. all my nagging and chronic injuries have subsided, and i've only gained about 5 pounds, which i probably needed anyways for the winter.[Edited on December 14, 2010 at 3:01 PM. 12/14/2010 2:59:27 PM
^^ yep we got the UA one.
12/14/2010 3:46:02 PM
awesome. can't wait to look like a ninja while running.
12/14/2010 4:03:35 PM
Dick's was sold out so I had to order off of Amazon. Red hood FTW:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YISH6/ref=oss_product
12/14/2010 10:22:37 PM
I signed up for the 5k Rugged Maniac in April.Has anyone done this before?I couldn't resist the facebook ad.
12/15/2010 5:05:29 PM
^Thanks for posting that. I just signed up for the race in Jacksonville. If it goes well, I will probably run the race in Greensboro. I hate running, so this seems like a good way to trick myself into thinking that I am training for something more than just a road race.
12/17/2010 11:50:21 AM
Oh, I'm ridiculously excited. 14 obstacles just sounds hysterical.
12/18/2010 11:29:43 AM
I guess joenumbers isnt running anymore...so sad....
12/18/2010 11:47:54 AM
I really need to get back into running, but I suck at it. I've heard/read that its better to run with someone b/c doing so will reduce the chances of you quitting/not giving your all. Would anyone like a running partner? I'm slow at the moment but I do want to work up to about a 730/7 min per mile pace. Currently I'm about 9/930 min per mile.
12/19/2010 10:24:35 AM
I'll be in Cary the last week of the year if anyone wants to run Umstead or the Greenway Trail. For a 3-miler, could keep a 7:45 pace, based on a relatively flat course. I don't mind a slower pace though. NC hills and cold are a bit challenging for a Floridian.[Edited on December 19, 2010 at 10:53 AM. Reason : k]

Interesting article. I haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet and probably won't. I have seen these shoes mentioned a lot lately, Newtons.http://www.newtonrunning.com/run-better/optimal-running-formThe soles of the shoe are designed so that you land on your forefoot and roll forward, rather than heel strike. I naturally run on the balls of my feet more than heel strike, so these might be more in line with my running style.
