Can you only perform hammer on/pull off on the notes that do not have the little black ring on the top? Or are most notes possible?

that motherfucking mississippi queen is starting to piss me off. i've 5-starred almost all the mediums except that fucking thing. figures that they only let you use the pull offs on part of a run

^^haha, I had some problems getting 5 stars in medium with that song as well. Finally got it last night.

Okay quick newb question: Someone told me the only way you can really play/handle expert and some hard songs to to use the technique of always holding down all the buttons, and just releasing them at the right times, instead of what I've been doing which is push down on the buttons at the appropriate times. I've started changing my technique but its a bitch, so is the right way to go?

I definitely do NOT do that, and I've fared relatively well on expert in all four Guitar Hero games.

Hmm, b/c on some of the really hard songs and notes my hands are just too physically overwhelmed to do it fast enough. Is that just some muscle conditioning that'll come with time?

Yes. The dexterity needed for chord combos and fast solo stuff will build over time.

When I first started medium I honestly thought I was incapable of using my middle+pinky fingers to play the red/blue chord, now I can 5-star almost everything on expert up until the group after Evenflow.

^^^Yeah, i had that problem with the red blue cord. Still do a little bit, esp going back and forth from red to blue. I've almost five stared everything on medium, but still haven't beat Lou. I started the game on medium, skipped easy.

for some reason on the wii it just lets you beat lou almost regardless i think. there's no way in hell i can do those runs, and yet i still got to "finish him" or whatever despite my rock gauge being in the yellow

I think GHIII is easier to get the hang of than GHII. It is a lot more forgiving I suppose.

HO's/PO's easier in GHIII

GHII is easier overall. The expert mode is like hard on GH III.

2 is many times better than 3. The songs are better, in my opinion, and they're more fun to play. Also the extra tracks all suck on 3.

GHIII has some hefty system requirements. It's a mixed bag as to whether it will work smoothly on your system. I've seen it get choppy (not terribly so, but definitely noticeable) on a 2.6 GHz Core 2 Duo with a 8800GT. Any game should be smooth as silk on a rig like that, especially a simple rhythm game where even the smallest amount of lag will throw you.

If you haven't done so already, check out Frets on Fire (for the PC). Frets on Fire does for GHIII what MUGEN does for Street Fighter. FoF doesn't have all the bells and whistles like an animated band/crowd and it looks terrible without mods, but it gets the job done. Plus it will run a lot smoother than GHIII.

FoF is a work in progress. From what I understand you are better off getting one of the older versions instead of the latest. I've heard that the latest version of FoF has a few bugs and there aren't any mods that are available for it.

The #1 downside with FoF is song availability. You can either create your own or you can try to find songs. Since most of the songs are fan created the majority of them only have one available difficulty so you can't ease yourself into it playing the song. I believe that all GH1, GH2, and GH3 songs are available for FoF, and I hear that they are direct rips from the game, meaning the frettings are the exact same as they are in the official game. If you can find those, any other songs you find are just icing on the cake.

There are good enough mods for FoF now to make it look pretty close to GH (fret boards, notes, etc.) but again, you'll miss the animated band and crowds - but you'll get better performance.

Runs really smooth on my computer. Seems to look better than the 360 version. Hooked my desktop up to a 42" and compared the two. Although the PC version is more annoying when trying to sync it i think.

Gibson sues Guitar Hero for patent infringement:

Quote :
"The Guitar Hero series has sold more than 14 million units in North America and raked in more than $1 billion since 2005.

Gibson said the games, in which players use a guitar-shaped controller in time with notes on a television screen, violate a 1999 patent for technology to simulate a musical performance.
"

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/22/business/22guitar.html?ref=business

Guitar Hero has been around for 3 years and they are just now getting to this? I hate patent laws and how companies just sit back and wait until someone makes a billion dollars so they can sue for all the hard work that they were too lazy to put into it.
