^^ Exactly... I can't help those rednecks that got a big ol' 8 tattooed in the middle of their neck. DONT MAKE SUCH A DUMB DECISION NEXT TIME!!! ^ Yes, the team owners own the numbers. They can choose to sell them, but it never happens. It wouldn't be up to Dale to buy the number, it would be Hendrick's deal. But Teresa ain't sellin'!

the teams don't own the numbers. nascar owns them and leases them to the teams. the teams then assume the right to license that given number.

There is no selling of numbers, but deals are made. Ie, when Ray Everham acquired the #9 from Harry Melling for Bill Elliott, Harry Melling secured factory support from Dodge in exchange.Im fairly certain RCR still leases the #3 rather than leaving it out there for someone to snatch up.

and the other 3 or 4 wrecks caused by tire failure?
7/15/2007 7:26:20 PM
Lap 252 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 7: Joe Nemechek spins through the tri-oval and into the grass. He has no damage.Lap 245 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 6: J.J. Yeley is in the wall.Lap 223 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 5: Jimmie Johnson crashes hard into the wall with heavy damage to the right side of his car. He cut a right-rear tire and slammed the fence while running second.Lap 202 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 4: Dave Blaney cuts a tire and spins into the wall, collecting Ward Burton. Blaney has major damage to the front and driver's side. Burton heads to the garage. Lap 164 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 3: Robby Gordon spins around in Turn 2 after getting loose and backs his car into the wall. He has major damage to the rear end and takes it behind the wall.Lap 154 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 2: Jamie McMurray hits the wall in the corner with a possible right-front tire issue.Lap 59 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 1: Jeff Green spins after getting high in the turn and trying to avoid crashing Michael Waltrip. So if we are counting. I see Jamie McMurray as the only tire failure.

cut tire from........yeahnascar threw debris cautions like crazy last season. You get to a boring ass track and race and they don't throw a single one, despite all of the tire failures (for one reason or another). I think after the past few seasons of Goodyear being the cause (or at least not helping solve the problem) with tire failures everyone watches what they say when it comes to big time series sponsors for fear of the shitstorm that can come from it. Sure, you can mandate air pressure and camber settings, but if you continue to use a hard compound, soft sidewall, high profile tire, you are going to have problems when it comes to teams using setups that put added abuse on the tires. Goodyear AND Nascar should know this and come up with a tire that can withstand the abuse of what the teams are throwing at it. What about a 17 or 18" diameter rim and a wider, lower profile tire? This will give you less sidewall flex to generate heat, allow them to use a larger brake for better cooling and thus less bead failures, update the look to go along with the COT idea of making them look more like the current street cars (the avenger, monte carlo, and impala can have 18s, fusion and camry 17s, the charger can even come with 20s) which was a big selling point to the manufacturers in regard to going with the COT. I fell like I've bitched about this before in this thread.....

Low profile tires and large rims, while a nice thought, are not a good idea. First, larger rims are heavier. Not exactly something you want on a race car. Right now Goodyear makes about 150,000 tires each year for nascar at $416 a piece. That is $62.4 million. References will be included at the bottom for you. Low profile tires, on average, range from 20-40% more expensive than a conventional tire. So taking that into account, and lowballing the price at 20%, we just jumped to $75 million. Then add the cost in of a larger rim, which i'm not sure of and we could be talking a very significant increase in price. Low profile tires offer more grip and maneuverability but they wear faster than a conventional tire. Someone complaining about "tire failure" should be the last to want a tire that wears even faster. A faster wearing tire would require more pit stops and even more money. Nascar tires are filled with Nitrogen, not air. There is less moisture in the tire this way and it enables more control of tire pressure as speeds of 200 mph and temperature of 270 degrees F are reached. When you get up to that kind of speed and temperature, a second "inner tire" is used. That way if the outer tire blows the inner tire is hopefully still there, allowing the driver to safely get to the pit. A low profile tire would not allow the use of an inner tire and as a result be even more of a risk. The tires could use redesign from year to year I COMPLETELY agree with that. But not because the technology is wrong, because the tracks change year to year. http://tinyurl.com/33vlt3http://www.apa.ca/template.asp?DocID=94http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/nascar5.htm]

larger alloy rims won't necessarily be heavier than the steel wheels in use now. IRL and Champ Car get away with lower profile tires, speeds up to 230-240mph, higher cornering loads, and much more downforce. Bridgestone/Firestone seem to have it figured out. They also use aluminum/magnesium wheels to reduce the weight and the wheels don't seem to have a problem with durability. Tire wear has a lot more in play than the overall profile. You can have a lower profile tire with a similar hard compound. (they aren't even wearing out in some races, look at busch and trucks running over half a race on one set of tires, even though it's multiple fuel stops) [Edited on July 17, 2007 at 2:30 PM. Bush and especially the Craftsman Series run at lower speeds and use a much harder tire. Kind of like the tire Nextel uses at Sears Point. Any idea what the weight difference is in a formula 1 car vs. a stock car?
7/17/2007 2:49:49 PM
A Formula 1 car weighs ~ 600 kg. (1323 lbs.) : That is car, driver, and camera.A NASCAR regulation car must weigh 3400 lbs. with the car, driver, and all safety gear.(Both weights include gas, water, and oil.)

hey girl
7/17/2007 3:20:04 PM
^^^At several tracks this year, the Busch pole speed has been very comparable to the Cup pole speed. At Dover, the Busch pole speed was faster.
7/17/2007 4:21:21 PM
^A lot of times that happens when they use the COT in Cup, it's bigger and less aerodynamic so theyre a good bit slower than the regular Cup car or a Busch car...even the trucks ran faster at one track (I believe it was Dover).
7/17/2007 4:25:26 PM
Busch and Cup have used the exact same tire a number of times this season, including this past weekend at Chicago. Stewart won because the tires were so hard they didn't wear out and he could do a gas only stop and still hold off everyone else.
7/17/2007 4:52:54 PM
you can't rely on weight of the car as a measure of forces on the tire. in short track or road course trim, IRL/Champ Car/F1 produce well over 3000lbs of downforce, well over 4000lbs for f1.damnit, meant to hit edit post, not reply. [Edited on July 17, 2007 at 4:55 PM. Reason : ]

7/24/2007 11:19:26 AM
^^ The technological advancement is in the safety features and the template standardization, not the aero.If anything, racing needs a step back in technology. F1 would be far more entertaining from a racing perspective if they'd take the wings off the cars.[Edited on July 24, 2007 at 11:23 AM. Reason : three days]
7/24/2007 11:22:50 AM
^ Yeah. F1 would be really frickin huge if they went back to Formula Ford. NASCAR's currently in a state of denial. They want to cut down costs but are incapable in understanding that the people with the most money will always spend more money cause they want to win. If you remove that desire to win, there's no point for me to tune in on Sundays. If NASCAR wants development to stop, they might as well build all the cars themselves, get rid of Ford, Chevy, Toyota, and Dodge, and call the series IROC.Anyway, HUGE NEWS, effective immediately, Ginn Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. are merged. Apparently, Ginn, although very rich himself, was hemorrhaging money on his racing operation. DEI will now run those cars. Here's the effects:-#8 car of Dale Earnhardt Jr. continues with no changes-#1 car of Martin Truex continues with no changes-the owner points of Ginn's #14 car are transferred to the #15 car of Paul Menard, Menard's car goes from 39th in owner points to 30th and is guaranteed a starting spot as he is now in the Top 35 in owner points-the former driver of the #14 car, Regan Smith, is without a ride and is now just in the Truck Series-the #13 car of Joe Nemechek is closed effective immediately, the #78 team tried to buy the owner points of the #13 but were told no by NASCAR-the #01 car of Mark Martin/Regan Smith will now be under DEI ownership, no effect to Martin, the partial schedule will be taken by Aric Almirola-due to the #13 car being closed, the #21 car is now in the Top 35 in owner points[Edited on July 25, 2007 at 6:42 PM. ^ My point about F1 is that the cars have been perfected to the point of sterility. It's an equipment battle. That's fine, of course, but the fact is that there are a dozen drivers who could win a Grand Prix is they were behind the wheel of a McLaren. Perhaps I'm naive to think that if you took away some of the downforce, other factors of equipment superiority wouldn't make up for the amount of driver skill that would be re-entered into the equation, but it's worth a shot.
7/25/2007 6:48:16 PM
^ What the f*** else are you supposed to do with $100 million? The only way to make F1 less technologically advanced is for F1 the sport to go through a recession like IndyCar has. If you have a lot of money, people are going to find ways to win by spending the money! NASCAR right now has a lot of money! F1 has a ton of money.[Edited on July 25, 2007 at 8:21 PM. Reason : .]
