Anyone having any screen flickering issues with a Prime? I haven't had a chance to look, but my gf installed some game and said the screen was flickering like crazy. I'm figuring its just not tablet compatible, but I also read other people have been having flickering issues with ICS.

I just got my first smartphone, a Droid X2 with Verizon. What are some good apps to start with (utilities, etc.)? I've already got the Amazon app market for their daily freebie.
1/12/2012 12:46:49 AM
Help! On the amazon app store - I'm getting a strange problem: "Download in progress" alternates with "Download queued" and nothing ever gets downloaded or installed over the past week. I'm running stock on DX. I have enough space and have checked to ensure that unknown sources and all are enabled. Anyone know whats up?
1/12/2012 7:32:09 AM
^^why the DX2? I'd take that back in a hurry and get a newer (better) device.
1/12/2012 8:00:33 AM
I don't understand why people get crappy phones for cheap/free with a 2 year contract instead of getting a nice phone even if it's 2 or 3 hundred dollars.Either way you go, the vast majority of the money you spend on your phone over 2 years is on the contract, and it's the same for both.I'd rather pay $2500 over 2 years for a Nexus than $2200 over 2 years for an LG Enlighten
1/12/2012 1:31:49 PM
Yeh, I'd rather spend some money and get a much better device.Though, I always hesitate when my upgrade becomes available (unless I need a new phone). New devices are nice, but fuck paying $300 for the device and >$100 for accessories every two years. Especially the webtops now... $400 for a laptop converter? I don't care to spend $1,000 on just the phone + accessories each year. And I think this is where Apple has a big advantage over Android. Their devices, at least for generations, are compatible with each other/accessories, AFAIK.
1/12/2012 1:39:01 PM
HTC and Motorola have said they're going to cut down on the number of phones they're release in 2012. Maybe they'll also get some sort of uniform design while they're at it. Accessories right now are pretty much just a waste of money.Extended batteries 50% off for all 4G LTE phoneshttp://www.droid-life.com/2012/01/12/extended-batteries-for-all-verizon-4g-lte-phones-are-50-off/http://www.droid-life.com/2012/01/12/verizon-makes-4g-lte-a-hard-requirement-for-all-future-smartphones/]

yeah, my wife had a samsung alias 2 that she was hearbroken over when it got wet at the beach...i asked her if she wanted a smart phone and she had zero interest in it...still has zero interest in it after playing with my phone a little biti like tech and gadgets, but even i don't really use it very much...don't get me wrong, it was worth it to me to get one, but just barely *shrug*

Wow, thank you so much for your help and comments, guys. Sorry for not buying the biggest and best and most expensive thing on the market. If wdprice3 and AndyMac want to fund it, I'll happily return my phone for the Nexus or 4S.
1/13/2012 5:38:03 PM
I wasn't really talking about you. The Droid X2 was at least a top of the line phone when it came out (and better than the one I've got right now TBH).Talking about people who buy just some random cheap smartphone.

Just put ics on my xoom. This is the is that should have shipped on tablets. Its like having a brand new tablet.

1/17/2012 2:52:54 PM
Bought a Transformer Prime tonight. Had to drive all the way to Wilson, but I think it'll be worth it!
1/18/2012 8:47:44 PM
I waited (what seemed like) forever for the Galaxy Nexus and the Transformer Prime and with both running Ice Cream Sandwich, I couldn't be happier, it's a huge leap forward, and IMHO is a real competitor against the Apple eco-system. With Google Music, Video and Books allowing music purchases, app purchases, movie rentals, and books all in one Market, it's so seamless. Being able to surf the market online and send all the content to different devices FROM the website is wicked cool too. The Tegra3 and SuperIPS+ screen are just amazing hardware for the Transformer Prime and the tablet is blazing fast. Aside from the GPS being weak (which is pretty much a non-issue), they are both serious contenders..[Edited on January 19, 2012 at 11:08 AM. Reason : ,]

And as soon as I post the comment about the GPS, there's an updated firmware.GPS fix, Camera, Faster Browser apparently.http://www.droid-life.com/2012/01/18/asus-transformer-prime-update-rolling-out-as-build-9-4-2-11/Also a really cool unlock+root app for GNexhttp://www.droid-life.com/2012/01/04/simple-galaxy-nexus-lte-rootunlock-and-unrootre-lock-tool-released/

If I read twitter feed correctly, GPS fix was silent and breaks root.

So I'm still annoyed that the voice search button was removed from my tray in ICS, and replaced with a tiny widget in the upper right hand corner that sometimes works...especially given how people are starting to use voice features more and more now that they're maturing.Anyone know how to put an app shortcut/widget for Voice Search on your home page in ICS? I've done some research and have come up with nothing so far...]
1/20/2012 4:43:17 PM
^I've seen custom ROMs that have it by I haven't found anything if you're not rooted. I kinda miss that too.
1/20/2012 5:58:08 PM
I currently have a shitty non-smartphone. I can get a HTC Incredible 2 for $10 online. Sound good? I know its not 4g but my gf has one and I like it and I'm not a "power user". Keep in mind that pretty much anything would be a step up.
1/23/2012 2:17:19 PM
Is this 10$ with agreement or not. If not extending contract for it, no harm no foul. But if in the long run it's extending contract, then I'm sure you'll get told don't do it. I know I wouldn't.
1/23/2012 2:21:28 PM
Yes, with agreement. Any particular reason why I shouldn't?
1/23/2012 2:22:30 PM
1/23/2012 2:33:52 PM
^^ You are trading your ability to get a new phone for 20 or 22 months for a $10 phone. Just make sure you are ok with buying having and outdated device. Me personally, I would rather have a 4g phone with kickass specs but if that is not important to you go for it.
1/23/2012 2:37:00 PM
Yeah it's really not that important to me. I've never not had an outdated phone. All I need is light web browsing, angry birds, and occasional gps.
1/23/2012 2:39:41 PM
There are probably 4G phones that are near that ballpark on Verizon now too. You say you don't care, but in reality it's probably a safer bet to get the newer phone if you plan on having it for 2+ years anyways, why not get the better technology?
1/23/2012 2:51:13 PM
Just got around to rooting the Nexus S 4G I had sitting around and threw an ICS rom on there ... pretty awesome, runs smooth.Just made it my primary phone. Bonus: Exchange works like a charm, and so does VPN with Cisco's Rooted Anyconnect from the Market! Hello working from home anywhere.[Edited on January 23, 2012 at 3:05 PM. Reason : .]

Because I'm a cheap, short-sighted bastard? Also I'm not a fan of the seemingly drastic battery life drop-off of the 4g phones.
1/23/2012 3:04:58 PM
I usually save my eligibility for a flagship device. If I'm going to sign 22 months then I want the maximum value.I'd rather spend 100-150 on ebay than to renew my contract. (Which I did recently with "downgrading" to nexus s 4G.

I can't compare to an HTC, but my Nexus S 4G is getting far better life outta ICS than it ever got with Gingerbread.

Debating putting Peter Alfonso's bug less beast on my galaxy nexus. Unreal battery life being reported by people running it.
1/26/2012 5:58:08 PM
The gf has a crappy Blackberry and is wanting to get a new phone when she's eligible for an upgrade the first week of March. I currently have a Thunderbolt and have been very happy with it, though I think she wants to go with something else that's 4G. Any potentially good phones on the horizon for her around then?

Anyone need the Nexus extended battery? $25 If not, I'll just take it back to Verizon tomorrow.
1/31/2012 8:26:34 PM
Is the Incredible 2 a solid phone? I'm currently on Verizon here in ENC and haven't really been happen with the reception of my OG Droid for either voice or data. I'm not sure if it is1) The phone2) The service, or3) The service...in that, I am still on some grandfathered Alltel plan and these assholes have me stuck on inferior towers or something. While my coworker gets 6-1000kbps in the building on average with his US Cellular service I'm getting sub 100kbps.I wish it were easier to try out phones and services and then pick.

So I'm due for a phone upgrade at the end of this month. I'm with AT&T. My previous smartphone for the past 2 years has been a BlackBerry. I'm looking to enter the 21st century by getting an Android or iPhone.I could get an iPhone 4 for $99 or an iPhone 4S for $199. I can also get a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S II for $10. There are a slew of other Android phones ranging from free to $199.I've been doing some research and I hear that Android is notorious for fragmenting their OS...in other words, cutting off software updates for many of their phones well before most people's 2 year contracts are up, rendering the phone outdated and somewhat obsolete. I've also heard that many Android phones don't get the latest OS software update right away, in some cases not even after several months after the new OS update is released. Apple, on the other hand, pushes their OS updates to all iPhones as soon as they are released so no phone has an outdated OS.However I like how the Galaxy has a larger screen than the iPhone and can access the 4G network.Given this, should I go for the $10 Samsung Galaxy or shell out the extra $100-200 or so for the iPhone 4/4S?
2/1/2012 9:36:36 PM
In almost all cases the software updates are provided by the phone manufacturers. It's not the fault of Google/Android that one phone or another doesn't get major/minor updates. You'll need the Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket if you want 4G with AT&T. The regular SII is not 4G.
