didn't anyone tell jobs that imitation was the sincerest form of flattery?

I'm thinking about getting the nexus, but i'mnot sure about the 3 buttons. Can someone give me some info on the two buttons I'll be missing:1 - Menu/options button - That button was pretty sweet since you could bring up the options of any app just by hitting that button. Now...how do you do it? Do all of the apps have buttons for options...and they're normally hidden if the phone has a menu\options button? Or is this change a ice cream sandwich thing, and not a phone specific issue?2 - Search button - I like being able to hold that down from anywhere and say "navigate to..., call so and so...search for x, etc." So with that button being gone, how can I replicate that functionality? I know ICS has that google widget on each home screen, but what if I'm in an app? I have to back out of the Home screen?Lastly, can you customize what the new 3 buttons can do with long holds, or is that all hard coded into the OS?

LOL he doesn't know how to use the 3 seashells buttons.
12/21/2011 3:27:07 PM
^^most screens/apps/folders/etc have a settings buttoni personally never used the search button so i cant comment hereas far as im aware, theyre fixedcoming from an OG droid to a nexus, i cant say that i miss anything
12/21/2011 3:47:38 PM
^i'm with him, the settings button shows up if an app uses it, and never used the search button.but if you root your Nexus you can have whatever flavor you want:http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/add-permanent-search-button-to-on-screen-controls-galaxy-nexus/

free Amazon app of the day is Gift Shopper ProI actually used it today and knocked out all my Christmas shoppingbut I don't see myself using it again until next year
12/21/2011 4:35:51 PM
I have a Galaxy Nexus and I came from a Dinc. The new menu/settings options took me a little bit to get used to but it's fine. I do kinda miss my search button though Yes, you have to go home and hit the search widget if you want to use voice actions. But most apps have their own search built in either in the app or via the menu/settings button.

thoughts as to why my thunderbolt is now losing battery like i'm using 4G and streaming video? i don't recall installing anything recently and i haven't been using data more than usual...it's set to use only 3G and it connects to wifi at work at home, just like usualit used to last 24 hours (actually longer...it's down to about 30% after 24 hours) and now it's lasting something like 5 hours...it's a big difference
12/24/2011 8:36:12 AM
^ Could it be battery degradation? I noticed that with my Evo pre-USB port dying. Now since I'm in constant rotation of batteries that go down to ~10% all the time it's doing better. Did you do a ROM update (if you're running a custom one) as some cyanogen mods on my Evo would just suck the hell out of battery like the screen would be on and it'd be a count on battery. I wish Sprint would get the Nexus Prime I need a new phone, broken USB port is not the way to be.
12/24/2011 10:52:42 AM
So i got a tablet for xmas as well as a sprint mobile hot spot.... im not sure i want to keep the hot spot though as im not sure how much it will actually get used

First impressions with the Galaxy Nexus:So fast. The hardware isn't that different than my Evo 3D so I've got to think it's the OS. Taking pics, texting, opening apps etc, it's all blazing at this point. The 3 buttons don't bother me that point...especially given that they add a 4th "settings" button when you're in apps. I do miss having the search button accessible all the time but i'll deal with it.Battery life is better than Evo 4G and 3D. I haven't been blazing up the 4G or anything yet, but overall it seems better.ICS - Widget library is lacking at this point...but most/all of this can be made up with apps. Multi-select in the gallery is awesome. Lack of FB contact syncing is annoying...I'm assuming that'll be fixed soon.Love having folders on the home screen.Looking forward to using bookmark sync with desktop Chrome.Verizon - I pulled 25 down and 16 up around Crabtree Mall. That's like twice as fast down as my $45/month uverse internet and 8+ times as fast up. Incredible. They had some promotion going when I signed up that doubles your data. So I pay for 2GB, and get 4GB...at least for the next two years and probably beyond.Unlike Sprint, I can do a lot with 1 bar of service, both voice and data. Also unlike Sprint, when my phone says I have network connectivity, I really do.]

I think we need a Android specific tablet thread

while it's not full Facebook syncing, that SyncMyPix app does most of what I want out of Facebook syncing...

when traveling, i like to use my thunderbolt (in airplane mode so it doesn't HAVE to be plugged in) as an alarm clock that's also ALWAYS on...i recently discovered kaloer clock (http://www.kaloer.com/kaloer-clock) and i really like it as using the app will automatically put it in airplane mode (if selected) and take it out of that mode (again, if selected) when you exitused it last night (unplugged) and, for the record, 9 hours of always on at the dimmest display (in screen saver mode so that it's not always in the same place...though that probably doesn't matter) only used about 25% of my (already craptastic) thunderbolt batteryoh, it also turns off the menu button backlights, which is a plus
12/27/2011 12:01:06 PM
For those of you on Verizon, do you pay the $3-$4 for visual voicemail, or do you use an app?
12/27/2011 4:22:16 PM
^ i use Google Voice for voicemail

Question, possibly a dumb one:I use the Notes Mobile app on my ThinkPad Tablet as a whiteboard for tutoring. Each 'page' is a separate .png file, and the dumb app can only send one page at a time per email. Even though they are grouped in notebooks in it, no more than one page/.png can be exported at one time. I can't pick multiple pages, or a whole notebook, to send at once. It's annoying to me and the student to send 10 separate emails, each with one picture attached, so they can have a record of the work we did.How can I quickly and easily batch these .png files, preferably as .pdf, and send them together with one email?I've tried uploading to GoogleDocs, and giving them access. But it's just as tedious, and the handwriting and graphs become grainy and almost unreadable when GoogleDocs does the conversion to .pdf. Is there another whiteboard, notes, or sketching app that will allow me to export multiple files at once? I don't need or want handwriting recognition or conversion to text. Just my handwriting and hand-drawn graphs.[Edited on December 27, 2011 at 4:40 PM. Reason : edit]

i just got the droid razrthe speed/functionality are blowing me awaythis thing is so tits
12/27/2011 5:09:44 PM
why did you choose that over the nexus?
12/27/2011 5:20:53 PM
12/27/2011 7:02:34 PM
Verizon reps probably told him the Razr is so much more awesome than the Nexus
12/27/2011 7:27:35 PM
Maybe he wanted a more durable and splash resistant phone.
12/27/2011 10:09:41 PM
wow, motorola & vzw marketing did a number on you.a) both the RAZR & Nexus are plastic bodies, RAZR just has a Kevlar layer, it's not like it's bulletproof or anything....b) both have glass screens, RAZR is gorilla-glass, Nexus has a Samsung proprietary glass that's just as good if not better than gorilla glass.
12/28/2011 1:59:50 AM
Are you talking to me?What makes you think some no name glass deserves an "if not better" after saying it's as good? If you don't have any evidence you should probably just say "probably just as good"And they have been advertising the razr being splash resistant. Of course it could be totally made up but I haven't heard anyone call them out yet. [Edited on December 28, 2011 at 2:27 AM. Reason : sounds like anti-marketing cynicism has really done a number on you]
12/28/2011 2:26:15 AM
i was simply responding to your "more durable" comment... i just hear that a lot with no basis of comparison to back it up other than spouting off the "features" listed on the RAZR sales sheet.yes, the RAZR has a P2i water-resistant nano coating... that's a fact.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGgJTrEYhQEyes the Nexus has fortified glass that's "probably just as good" i'm basing this off of videos of scratching the glass with keys on both screens, so no it's not cynicism[Edited on December 28, 2011 at 2:37 AM. 12/28/2011 2:36:54 AM
I always facepalm at those scratch tests. All it takes is one grain of dirt and any screen will be scratched.
12/28/2011 7:30:15 AM
yea, i dunno about that, it's really more about a quick easy way to tell if it's fortified... but i've had my phone in my pocket with keys and there's absolutely no marks on it whatsoever. obviously if you rub sand on it it's going to scratch, i mean they can't protect against blowtorches and sandpaper, there are limits. the test is basically just a yes/no kind of test, does it prevent scratches or not in an everyday kind of scenario.
12/28/2011 10:37:37 AM
Point was people read too much into them and then go all "zomg, my phone has a scratch from carrying it in my pocket" and get mad because the supposed "scratch tests" showed no damage.
12/28/2011 10:47:34 AM
The p2i coating on the razr is a plasma deposited polymer coating, so its not just "plastic" exactly. I do plasma deposition myself
12/28/2011 12:25:09 PM
when i said plastic body i meant the body/shell of the phone, AFAIK, the P2i is just on the internals and wasn't referring to that, sounds like a pretty cool job tho[Edited on December 28, 2011 at 12:57 PM. Reason : .]

12/28/2011 1:47:30 PM
12/28/2011 2:25:27 PM
Gotcha, I haven't seen exactly where they say the P2I coating is on the phones, but from the advertisements and the P2I videos I thought it was on the externals. Stuff like the demonstrations on how the externals of the phone are hydrophobic, which is due to the chemistry of the coating they can put on by plasma. Hell the speaker area looks superhydrophobic, but I think that's a matter of the surface features with the coating and the fact that they were using water droplets. I've heard that the phone won't survive complete immersion. It would require a metal structure for me to do it, but maybe they've figured out how to do it on plastic . Enough nerding on this for me lol
12/28/2011 3:03:57 PM
I had no data of any sort for over an hour and a half. Fucking piss me off.Naturally, this happens mid email conversation with someone I wanted to talk to

12/28/2011 4:51:21 PM
it should work for anyone that could have been affected. if you don't get it on the first try, then call again. I've gotten a month's credit several times, even when it ended up being a device issue.
