10/16/2014 8:07:52 PM
^^^ I don't get it, if they don't want their "community" field to be rented, they need to take it up with the parks & rec. What makes these white guys "rich"? They paid $27 to support the upkeep of the field by renting it out through legal channels, those neighborhood hoodlums sure didn't make a donation
10/16/2014 8:11:21 PM
Why was it necessary to specify these guys were 'white' in the article?
10/16/2014 8:16:39 PM
^^it's a public park. taxes pay for the upkeep, not the $27 "rental fee"

^yeah, but that's not the same thing at all.I'm sure if one of these suburbanites was scheduled to undergo super-dangerous brain-surgery the next day and had reserved the field so that he could play soccer with his bros for perhaps the last time, the regulars would have let them have the fieldand there are other large differences between your scenario and the actual situation, too. you're comparing apples to limes, here.[Edited on October 17, 2014 at 12:04 AM. Reason : okay, I'm not sure they would let them play. but I bet.]
10/16/2014 11:46:27 PM
Actually, no. It's pretty straightforward. Their reasoning for not leaving the pitch wasn't because they were "rich white men", it was because they claimed it was a "community" facility and should be shared by all, despite the proof of rental agreement. The shelters at Umstead are community facilities. Our tax dollars pay for them. They can be rented out. Doesn't matter if its for a bachelor party or a knitting party, you rent it = you get it.

10/17/2014 12:13:43 AM
What were their disgusting actions, paying a $27 rental fee and expecting to actually be able to play? They had no gentrification agenda nor cared about the morality battle between an organization created to address a lack of playable city fields in SF and the "community". There are plenty of run down shitty park facilities in SF that could definitely use some $27/hr rental fees coming in.[Edited on October 17, 2014 at 12:22 AM. Reason : *there]

So if you were playing a random pickup soccer game at a public neighborhood park, and a couple dozen minivans pulled up for a children's scheduled soccer game, you'd be a douchebag and refuse to leave?
10/17/2014 12:25:25 AM
It's not random. It's been pickup soccer there for decades.[Edited on October 17, 2014 at 12:28 AM. Reason : The douchebags were the assholes trying to kick kids off the field. Try and keep up.]

10/17/2014 12:35:03 AM
So did the dudes have a legitimate rental agreement or not?
10/17/2014 8:38:07 AM
10/17/2014 10:07:30 AM
They did.
10/17/2014 10:09:00 AM
they paid the rental fee. the others should have respected that. if they wanted to play on the field at that time, they could have paid the rental fee themselves. the people getting in the way of the folks who rented the facility should have been escorted off by the authorities.
10/17/2014 10:16:58 AM
That rental agreement was so legitimate that the park department killed the rental policy the next day.
10/17/2014 10:24:06 AM
Ultimately, it's P&R's fault for having a shitty system, apparently.Though, I'm not sure how you can fault the rich dudes for following what seemed to be a legitimate way to reserve a field. I've reserved athletic facilities before and had to ask people to leave. Am I a dick because I wanted to use the facility I paid for, even though it's otherwise open to anyone to use?Unless there is evidence that they knew the reservation system wasn't used and that there was no actual reserving of the field...
10/17/2014 10:31:28 AM
If anyone is acting entitled it's those local kids. They don't own the park, they didn't build the park, and they don't maintain the park. They're just users like everyone else, but they think they can bully people who went through the legal channels to use the place. Those guys should have called the cops and let things end very differently.
10/17/2014 11:32:37 AM
You *really* think the cops would have removed the kids from the field? Really?]
10/17/2014 11:35:30 AM
Thanks for the big ass picture. That really helped get your point across. Yes because trespassing.[Edited on October 17, 2014 at 11:39 AM. Reason : l]
10/17/2014 11:36:23 AM
I hope they got their $27 back. What a rip-off.
10/17/2014 11:38:08 AM
Of course the cops would have kicked them off, the kids were brown, remember? And everyone knows cops hate brown people.
10/17/2014 11:38:40 AM
It's not about white vs brown despite what that poorly written editorial would lead you to believe.Let a bunch of locals think they run things and it will quickly become non-inclusive for anyone who is not part of their crew. Maybe this particular park is an exception, but by and large you will find that outsiders will not be welcome to use facilities at places like this. The same thing happens at mountain bike trails and surf breaks that get a little too crowded and it always boils down to might makes right if it is left unchecked. Sorry, but that's not how a civilized society functions.[Edited on October 17, 2014 at 11:46 AM. Reason : l]
