True, but he happens to be right beside one of the three people who were killed (if that is, in fact, the kid, and if that is, in fact, close to the time of detonation), so that definitely makes it a little more suspicious.

And if you are placing a bomb in a bag, I doubt you'd be publicly rooting through the bag for an extended period of time. Unless you're trying to get caught, or you need to do something to get it ready I guess. Which maybe you do.

EMCE
We are good, I think we both get it that war is ugly, and it sucks, I see it every day. But we do try more than ever to prevent innocent loss of life, and it still happens, and it sucks. And the bad guys know to remove weapons before CNN get there, then it sucks worse. Then legit targets get hit and are reported wrong in the media, that sucks way worse. Then you get shot at, watch the dude run into a building, change clothes, and walk out 10 mins later waiving knowing we cant shoot him because he knows our rules, that is the biggest suck of them all. No shit, that is how it is right now.

NeuseRvrRat
I don’t want to comment in detail, but i know what to look for as far as indicators. This "home made explosives" deal is sorta like looking for a meth lab. you walk into a room and see sudafed boxes all over, specific sudafed boxes with a big number on it, and you say to yourself "i doubt this guy has a cold" so you poke around and find a stockpile of antifreeze, not illegal, but come on. So you poke some more... You either ball the guy up with the final product, or ball him up for having a banned item, but most times just drop by to see him more and more often. Smart Meth labs dont bring all ingrediants to one site untill the time is right.

HME is not heavy, and like any bomb, you make it bigger for more effect. Our friends over in al-queda can make a one man portable backpack deal with additional fragments too easy. I just doubt they would risk being detected in the states with HME for such a "small" event. Not to be insensitive, but Boston could have been a megacrapton worse.

I think it was a lone or small group of radicals, who knew enough about IEDs to research one way to make one. Hell, the pressure cooker with ball bearings screams south west asia, maybe that was part of the purpose for using it. They chose the end of the race, not the start where all the runners are jammed in. Why? I think becuase more coverage happens at the end, not too many news cameras at the start. AQ goes for statistics and outlandish results, this seems to be targeted for coverage. Why Boston? Maybe its the closest big target, maybe the race had the weakest security of scouted targets. Maybe the guy hates running.

If whoever did it just gets life in Federal Prison that is not really a punishment.

If i had a choice between death and life in Federal prison, I might choose death.

It will be federal prosecution so the death penalty is on the table. However, the last person (Eric Rudolph) to pull off an event with similar results got life (though he may have plead guilty) ; the big events (OKC, etc.) got the death penalty.

I hate they executed McVeigh a few months before 9/11.

He would have felt like a real fuck up if he'd seen it.

One FBI guy commented on it and hit the nail on the head:
The bomb screams southwest asia terror groups, the event (placement, timing, etc..) sceams domestic terror.

Maybe someone wanted it to look like south west asia? Maybe it was south west asian amatuers with enough know how to pull it off? Maybe it was some nut who could google IEDs? If the purpose was to kill, they did it wrong, flat out. They built a weapon to maime, and if you intentionaly build a weapon to do that, you have serious emotions about something and will do anything to send a message. OR, maybe they built a weapon to maime thinking it would kill. All speculation from my end, the pro's are all over this i know.

Federal Prisons are nicer than most state prisons, and the other inmates are generally less violent.

Hopefully we catch them to learn their motives and then find out he "killed himself" by cop behind the scenes justice.

I'm surprised it hasn't been solved yet.

Or maybe it mostly has been, just no word to the public yet.

With the amount of cameras at something like this, I wouldn't be surprised if this is solved by a picture or video someone happened to take. So it would be less surprising if the internet solved this crime than many other crimes.

You would think that the people being singled out in these pics would see themselves online and maybe try to clear their name. But they may not have seen it yet. That old guy in the blue probably doesn't get on the internet. That would suck to be one of them and have nothing to do with it.

^That's the problem I see here. It's kind of fascinating to see how quickly people on the Internet are assembling this material, but my guess is that the FBI is already a step ahead of them. The worst thing that could happen here is an innocent person is persecuted by an Internet witch hunt (and 4chan, Reddit, etc have shown remarkable capacity for ruining people's lives when motivated).

btw, Rudolph plead guilty, which is why he wasn't executed.

I love the people who automatically point their fingers to the Middle East. Quiet simply this most likely wasn't a terrorist organization attack. Its probably someone who may have ties to a terrorist organization and acted on his/their own accord or a white male (anyone for that matter, the white male is for emphasis) that is pissed off and not right in the head(yes they can kill people too). A terrorist organization would have definitely claimed credit for this by now and as brutal as it is to say, they failed if it was their doing. These guys do not aim at killing 3 people. Those bombs would have been a lot more sophisticated and would have taken out the whole block if it was a terrorist organization.

YOu can bet the FBI and authorities are already seeking these people out for questioning. Most will obviously be cleared but the guy with the blue jacket holding the black backpack seems to be the most intriguing and matches pretty well to the bag found to have contained the bomb.

I can't get my head around the bag still being intact after that explosion. Wouldn't it have just burned since the actual bomb was in it? There is a pretty distinct fireball in a lot of those pictures.

Most valid analysis i've seen, i don't agree with all the conclusions, but I do think that's the nature of the triggering devices (RC toys-- bomber was in line-of-sight or nearby when bombs went off).

it would be sorta funny if terrorist groups collectively decided to stop taking credit for their work. i mean it defies the logic of terrorism in a lot of ways, but it would baffle the public and in some ways lead to more terror.

I feel like we are a part of the investigation. Well. Along for the ride, because of the pictures. This is cool. Usually it's locked down til perp is arrested.

I hope the Internet solves the mystery

If that's the case, maybe there's a video with someone who reacts to a blast before the crowd?

alot of things survive a blast. Americans assume things burn becuase of hollywood explosions. But think about it, the force rips the bag apart and ejects it rapidly in a direction. When you pop a baloon, it stays mostly intact, disfigured but intact.

Also, flames do not always happen right at the source, air moves too quickly away to allow for combustion, untill it slows or swirls. Heat and pressure cause fringe metling, charring, and certain patterns for certain events.
