Babies with acid reflux will start to "self limit" their feeds and will also snack to wash down stomach acid. Right before starting medication, Amelia was down to 1-2 ounces every hour or two. It was exhausting. When we told the feeding therapist that we were up with her one night every hour on the hour, she called Amelia's peditrician to get her started on meds.Amelia is still having all sorts of tummy issues along with the reflux. She bottle feeds because of her cleft palate. I pump breast milk for her, but she also takes formula. None of the formula seems to sit with her very well. She has lots of gas and she only poops every 3 days or so. I know that can be normal, but it can't be very comfortable.
8/20/2011 1:46:20 PM
^ do you know if they could evaluate her for Hirschsprung disease?
8/22/2011 9:35:02 PM
We went to the pediatrician today and the pediatrician didn't seem too concerned. She said that it's ok for a baby to go that long without pooping as long as the poop isn't thicker than peanut butter. (Ew.)
8/22/2011 9:40:25 PM
Hah, good point. Hope she feels better :\My classmate is being induced on Wednesday the funny thing is, her due date isn't until next week
8/22/2011 9:47:31 PM
Big baby or high blood pressure?(or none of the above)
8/22/2011 9:50:14 PM
None of the aboveBitching because we have stuff to do in school and she doesn't want to "drag this thing out" she's only taking one week off! Insane. I want her to write a book of her thoughts on pregnancy though, haha..."Did you know babies have to eat like every TWO HOURS?? Ugh, who has that kind of time"
8/22/2011 10:26:23 PM
I think it's kind of crap these days that doctors will induce just for convenience. Babies aren't convenient! There's probably a good reason fetuses cook for 40 weeks and not 39 weeks
8/23/2011 11:46:52 AM
agreed!I was disappointed to be scheduled or even talking about it at 41...i wanted to go 42. i'm glad he came on his own just 2 days shy of 41 weeks [Edited on August 23, 2011 at 12:09 PM. Reason : ]
8/23/2011 12:08:53 PM
Well, in her case I don't really consider it just about convenience... poor girl is only taking a week off from school and if she had to wait til the 41 week mark it would really jack her up (2 weeks in our program makes a big difference).Plus, little babby is good to go according to her doctor.. I can't blame her for wanting to go ahead and bring her into the world during a time where it's not as stressful for our program - since it's only the 2nd week here our directors are more forgiving about extending deadlines and stuff for herMy other classmate and I have offered to babysit, too.... I can't even imagine only taking 1 week then balancing rotations + school + newborn
8/23/2011 1:33:17 PM
I don't know, I kind of feel like if you're in that situation you probably should have been condoming it up until you're done with the program
8/23/2011 5:37:03 PM
I don't think inducing before 40 weeks is the best idea.. but I do understand. However, I'm not opposed to induction after 40 weeks at all. On a side note... anyone take breastfeeding classes prior to birth and was it worth it after birth?
8/23/2011 5:45:44 PM
Her religion doesn't believe in birth control (she's not Catholic though)And I mean, even though she's not going to be 40 weeks (38 weeks at time of conception) at the time of birth she will be full term. I think it'll be 37w5d.
8/23/2011 6:01:30 PM
I heard that one legit way women can induce is by taking shots of whiskey, and apparently the baby is too far out for it to effect the development.
8/23/2011 8:22:02 PM
I know they call that full-term, but from my understanding really it just means, "The baby won't die and/or have severely underdeveloped organs if born now." If a baby was 100% done at 37 weeks why would the human gestation be 40 weeks? 3 weeks is a pretty big difference. I'm kind of surprised she found a doctor that would induce at less than 39 weeks.
8/23/2011 9:10:29 PM
I'm not surprised that she was able to find a doctor to induce her that early. Women are gaining increasing control over when and where they have their baby. Doctors don't halt labor if it starts after 37 weeks, so if the baby was healthy and on the larger size, I'm not surprised that a doctor was willing to "help things along" that early for scheduling purposes. And if a woman doesn't know her cycle, the due date is an estimated due date that could err in either direction.
8/23/2011 9:29:42 PM
Just to make sure we're on the same page, are you referring to LMP dating or using the date of conception? By LMP dating she will be 39w2d when the baby arrives. (Miscalculated earlier, should have been 37w2d for the gestational date, not 37w5d)As for the 3 week difference, a typical pregnancy lasts about 38 weeks using the date of conception. The organs aren't severely underdeveloped, and one of the most important factors that takes place before a child is born has already (the surfactant developing on the lungs). Every pregnancy is different and doesn't require the time that some others will - but at this point, her organs are developed and she is fine to come out.and the alcohol thing isn't true - there has been no "safe" time determined for alcohol except the for the first 1-2 weeks[Edited on August 24, 2011 at 1:11 AM. 8/24/2011 12:52:27 AM
But what about the additional brain development that occurs in utero during those last few weeks? Seems that's just as important as the other to not induce and bring a baby out earlier than nature intended--however long that may be.
8/24/2011 9:47:34 AM
Brain development just doesn't stop because the baby enters the outside world. Most neurons are produced prior to seven months and all cell migration is also complete t that time. Cell elaboration and myelination may begin in the womb, but continues for years. A lot of the studies that look at brain development in the last weeks in the womb are comparing preterm babies (>26 weeks) to full term babies (>36 weeks). In my opinion, there is a huge difference between the two. I think that just as it is within normal ranges for a pregnancy to go more than 40 weeks, it's also within normal ranges for a pregnancy to go for less than 40 weeks.
8/24/2011 10:41:09 AM
I think it would be interesting if they did a detailed study of babies born "full-term" but at 38 weeks, 40 weeks, 42 weeks, etc. I wonder what sort of findings they would show from such a study.
8/24/2011 11:39:35 AM
That would be very interesting.
8/24/2011 11:43:14 AM
We should convince someone at one of the medical centers around here to take up the challenge
8/24/2011 1:07:05 PM
It would be an interesting study, but I guess you would have to show why it would matter in every day practice to get enough funding (unless someone is really well known and they get funding regardless)And bb is right - myelination of the brain doesn't even finish in a child until during the 1st year... what really matters is that the surfactant is produced on the lungs (so the baby can breathe) - and of course all the other organ systems are developed. But, a lot of those organ systems are formed well beyond the full term mark, so if something is missing or severely underdeveloped, you got a bigger problem than the kid coming a week or two before the "typical" time. She should have the baby out by tonight.. they started induction this morning. First baby of the UAB-GC program Also, I just had a thought about the study. I wonder how feasible it would be to do that seeing as you can have so many confounding variables - teratogens during pregnancy, any complications, health of the mother, etc etc[Edited on August 24, 2011 at 1:40 PM. Reason : .]
8/24/2011 1:39:29 PM
I'm sure those are all things they would work with in the study, just like any other student dealing with newborns. You'd probably have to use women from similar backgrounds
8/24/2011 7:17:39 PM
Well I was mainly referring to things that would be hard to quantify, like if a woman was exposed to something or what they ate the entire pregnancy, etcIt would have to be insanely controlled, that's for sureAnywho... little babby is here!!!

We got see the baby yesterday she is so cute! 6 lbs 11 oz, 20 in long, and her name is Mia Yael can't wait to babysit
8/26/2011 12:02:01 PM
Being a diabetic I CANNOT go past 39 weeks. I know I am a special case as far as child birth goes but if I were to let my child stay in past that mark, I would be looking at a 12-15 pound baby. I can try hard as I want to to keep myself balanced blood sugar wise but the hormone that the placenta produces makes me almost completely insulin resistant by the end. If I wait to 38 weeks I can deliver without an amniocentesis but if I try for 37 weeks I need an amnio just because of lung development. I only deliver that early because the baby is registering weeks in advance as far as weight which is very dangerous at that point. My specialists all agree that a baby is full term at 37 weeks and the only obstacle from delivery at that point is lung development.

So, I have jury duty on Sept 7. I am so sad because this will be HELL on my milk supply. I am currently breastfeeding every 3-4 hours and I have not been able to pump much extra so I am thinking I will continue to go down in supply if I am summoned to court. I know our state does not exempt mother's from jury duty and I really wish they did. I guess I could bring Orion on the summons day, whip out my boob and feed her in public but I am not that free with feeding her in public. :-/]
8/29/2011 2:02:39 PM
^They don't exempt mothers, but are very lenient for breastfeeding mothers. If you call and explain to the clerk your issues, she may be able to dismiss you right then. If she can't, then you can explain to the judge, and will likely be dismissed at that point, and even if you have to go in for a half day, that's better than being stuck on a multi-day trial. Bring all your pumping stuff with you, and if they make you stay, tell them you need breaks and a private room for accommodations.
8/29/2011 2:05:26 PM
Well, I just sent in an excusal via their website because we don't talk to actual people anymore. I have to say that this summons is a deferment from March 27 when I was originally summoned. I gave birth to Orion March 31. I don't know if they will accept this excuse but I can try.
8/29/2011 2:27:52 PM
If not just start pumping in the middle of testimony
8/29/2011 2:34:06 PM
8/30/2011 12:55:20 PM
Yeah, that's a pretty jerky response.
8/30/2011 1:06:35 PM
^^ Just tell the judge they'll have to stop the trial every three hours so you can go into the lactation room to feed your child. No judge is going to want to deal with that.
8/30/2011 1:30:36 PM
^ hahah you just said what i was thinking. punchy while you wait you should ask to go to the lactation room every 30 minutes and then sit in there for about 15 minutes.
8/30/2011 2:29:38 PM
At least they won't actually pick you for a jury. You'll just have to suffer through a day of boredom.Exactly a year from getting my IUD out, I got a new one put in. I didn't even have to schedule an extra appointment to get it...just went for my annual exam. How is that for efficiency?
8/30/2011 9:06:00 PM
IUDs freak me out because I have nightmares of them penetrating my vaginal walls and screwing things up. I know that rarely happens but I'm a hypochondriac when it comes to those sorts of things lol.

so far it's a no go, but i will bring it up to the doctor one last time on tues, and at that point she will be 13 weeks.
9/2/2011 7:47:04 PM
Add me to the list. Wife is 11 weeks pregnant. Heard the heartbeat for the first time today.
9/2/2011 9:05:31 PM
Why a no go? Maning you and your wife don't think so or your doctor doesn't want you to?

can add me as well. 32 weeks Monday. Little Boy. Can't wait (especially now that my back/hips scream at me on a regular basis).

Wife is starting her 14th week on Tues but still has a washboard flat bekini belly going on (no humble brag intended). Is normal for her to take this long to pop?
9/3/2011 3:12:14 PM
^ Totally normal. I didn't have washboard flat stomach to begin with, but was rather normal. I didn't REALLY begin to show until about 20-22 weeks. I also have only gained (at last check) about 8 lbs. Baby is still small at 14 weeks, she'll pop when he grows.
9/3/2011 3:42:30 PM
alright thanks

Anyone pregnant should purchase Targets maternity gouchos and ribbed tanks. I have to tell you I wish I had discovered these months ago. Perfect for lying around the house and then going out the store and whatnot.
