That's what the franchise tag means... a 1 year contract. Either he signs it and plays or he sits out the year.

I think a player can be franchised 2 years in a row, but the second has additional stipulations (more money for one).

hopefully he comes to play, not just to collect those monster game checks.

^^^^ So if they wanted to come to a long term contract instead, they franchise tag rule would have let them? I understand that the tag is used to keep them from leaving, thus its probably only for 1 year, but once its used, I could see how Pep or some other player would want to sign a contract longer than 1 year.

you typically get more $$ from the franchise offer (for that year anyway...average of the top 5 salaries @ your position i think).....Pepps situation is different....usually its a money issue, but with him he just didn't want to play here any more, so a long term contract was out of the question.

I guarantee they told him they're changing the defensive scheme to let him focus more on rushing the passer.....Meeks D is heavily dependent on the front 4 getting pressure on the QB, as opposed to having him drop into coverage every other play.

he said he wanted to be an OLB in a 3-4 scheme....granted, they do have some cover responsibilities, but just look at last season's stats:

DeMarcus Ware, Joey Porter, James Harrison ect...all OLB "hybrids" in a 3-4 scheme, and they were all at the top in QB sacks and pressures.

right, because the DL is taking up all the blockers, so they have alleys to the QB. my assumption is he's tired of having to fight through the other team's best blockers, so this way someone else could do that, and he can use his speed to get around them
