Yeah no joke dude, I sure as hell would not move to norfolk for that much a year. That's why I applied to this place to begin with cause they presented that salary info right at the application/interview. The guy told me up front I'd be eligible for the full performance of GS7, so I was like hell yeah let's put in the application, lol. I spent months researching this after I put in the application too, so for them to come back and offer it to me again is so so so so SO fucking awesome, I'm so happy right now.Time to properly start looking for and applying to places to live down there.[Edited on May 5, 2009 at 3:12 PM. Reason : Also, average entry pay for the Raleigh area for my folks is about $45k/yr, so this is a great offer]
5/5/2009 3:07:00 PM
congrats man. I almost took a job there instead of the one I took in SC when I first came out of school.
5/5/2009 3:17:20 PM
^^ congrats, man! glad you've found something. i hope you like Norfolk.

Ah, in this area gs7 step 10 is $53k a year.[Edited on May 5, 2009 at 4:25 PM. Reason : clarification]Hey, if any of you out there are looking for a job in the construction industry I just got a message from a recruiter on facebook. If you're a recent grad this would probably be for you. PM me and I'll reply with his contact info. Probably requires relo, but hey, I imagine most of you all would be super happy for a job right now just like me. <3[Edited on May 5, 2009 at 4:32 PM. Reason : recruiter]

I start Monday too. I have only been looking for about a week. But since my resume was online with NC State's career services I got contacted by an employer that way. So much for applying and driving around Raleigh. :\
5/7/2009 7:27:07 PM
Finally got laid off today, oddly I am in a very good mood. My PM threw me a going away dinner party last night which was pretty awesome of him.Time for the next episode!
5/8/2009 7:24:32 PM
^ PM sent. This recruiter guy told me to bug any construction folks I came across. Probably requires relo, but hey, if you can it's not a bad time to do it (unless you have enough money to hold out til things turn around).
5/8/2009 11:18:49 PM
I was laid off on April 1, and I just got a call today for a job interview in DC on Tuesday. I'm heading up Monday night, and we'll see how it goes from there!

The key with the feds is to get in....and be mobile....I started as a GS 7 about 5 years ago...and I have moved three times for career advancement positions.Hate to tell you this, but a GS 7 step 10 is the highest in that grade, meaning you only get cost of living adjustments, no steps....so if someone got hired as a GS 8 Step 1, they get the yearly steps (after 4 years it is every three years then I think the last 3 steps it is like every 5 years)..you are stuck at a 7 step 10. To get any grade above that is a promotion. One of my coworkers got hired way back when as a GS 11 step 10...she thought it was great, but then relized she should of asked for a GS 12 Step 1 because in the long run you make more. She was stuck at that grade for years and that affects your retirement (she recently retired)[Edited on May 10, 2009 at 3:41 PM. Reason : w]

still employed. took a piss test friday afternoon and when that comes back A+ i'll be dumping vacation and moving on over to the world of the non-profits and stealing money thats supposed to be for poor peoplealso politics soon
5/10/2009 4:36:14 PM
Norfolk is rad.Live in Ghent, or, at least somewhere near Sentara Hospital. taht area rocks.do NOT live in Va Beach. fucking disgusting.
5/10/2009 4:49:03 PM
I'll be working in Portsmouth though. Rule I heard was stay on the same side of the water (for where you live and work) with respect to the tunnels. So right now I'm looking at the Churchland area, some of the neighborhoods northwest of airline blvd near the water, and the area of Chesapeake that's west of Portsmouth. I'll probably end up picking a somewhat boring family neighborhood to live in.
5/10/2009 5:50:02 PM
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that for now my family (parents) are planning a recon trip down there for the three of us for the first week of June. That'll be when we scout out and apply for a place down there.Outside of what I mentioned, are there any other spots I should look (or not look) on the portsmouth side of town? I was pretty sure, based on internerd forum research, that the areas near the shipyard were a dump, and if the property value in an area is 150k or less you're probably looking at a rougher neighborhood. Any merit to that, or any other advice? I'm trying not to live too far from work, as I would like to keep my stress to a minimum.

5/12/2009 7:56:53 PM
good luck!

^^^unless you want kids and have expensive hobbies like flying and travel etc.
5/12/2009 10:38:59 PM
I got the last of my paperwork sent out via fedex and faxed in today. Shortly there should be some background check type stuff and then more information about when we start and all that. I'm psyched, and so happy that I don't have any more paperwork sitting on my desk right now, hahaha.
5/13/2009 12:37:12 AM
I've been freelancing, but it looks like I may have a job offer by the end of the week.Torn between taking a job with guaranteed pay and working for "the man" vs being free to do my own thing and not knowing when the next check is gonna come in.
5/13/2009 1:57:28 PM
do bothit's what i do
5/13/2009 9:30:38 PM
Right now that's what I'm planning on doing - I just don't want to spread myself too thin.
5/13/2009 11:52:24 PM
what are you freelancing?
5/13/2009 11:53:50 PM
i thought contract positions were supposed to pay more because they didnt pay benefits
5/14/2009 12:54:15 AM
Well, they should but they don't have to. Sounds like they're trying to swindle somebody if they didn't add an extra $5-10k/yr to cover for the benefits.
5/14/2009 1:02:15 AM
^^^ Design services. Graphic, web, etc. It's technically considered freelancing because I'm doing it with that guy I told you about, I dunno if you remember. He incorporated, and I subcontract for him.
5/14/2009 8:33:27 AM
Contract rates are dependent on the rate which the end client allows the contract company to bill. Some offer benefits, others do not. Benefits are considered extra (the contract company offers them) so they are usually separate from the pay rate. I was a recruiter for 3 years before I was laid off. This is week 4 of unemployment.
5/14/2009 8:44:53 AM
5/14/2009 9:00:44 AM
yo dogg, i put an unemployed recruiter in your unemployment thread so you can talk about finding a job with a guy who doesn't have a job while you look for a job.
5/14/2009 9:01:30 AM
5/14/2009 9:48:15 AM
i got an email with this link last week if anyone is interested:http://www.epa.gov/oamhpod1/adm_placement/sapcbd/emag.htmstudent contract positions (bachelors degree w/in past 2 yrs) at the EPAunfortunately, it looks like the application deadline is tomorrow -- but perhaps if you're unemployed you can throw something together in time...
5/14/2009 12:50:38 PM
still unemployed/underemployed. my most recent opportunity didn't pan out and I'm still waiting for a long shot call back from a place i interviewed with a while ago.
5/14/2009 2:17:22 PM
Got a contract position. No benefits, but I won't complain with 50K+I'm psyched.
5/14/2009 4:42:07 PM
yay. seems more and more good news going aroundof my 5 teammates that got laid off at the end of february, we all have jobs as of today
5/14/2009 5:05:59 PM
It looks like companies are looking to hire educated/experienced help right now. Good news for many wolfwebbers, to be sure.Hopefully construction picks up this fall once again.
5/14/2009 7:41:27 PM
Since I have a "bank" of KSAs from applying for Fed jobs (and finally getting one)...I am throwing out applications for other Fed jobs...it is nice to be able to do that and be employed...if you get it great, but no loose if you dont. Some many Fed openings are preselected and they just go through the motions because of the law.
5/14/2009 9:06:52 PM
Well, apparently my interview went well on Tuesday. I received an offer letter yesterday, and I plan to accept the position today! I'll be moving to DC to start work in three weeks. Woohoo!

i hope i don't lose my job, i'm horrible on interviews
