Trial for the second suspect starts tomorrow. First suspect pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life without parole last year.
12/5/2011 5:56:13 PM
Really sad.
12/14/2011 3:18:06 PM
I think this is a very very sad case... but I don't believe testimony of a witness bribed to be there.
12/14/2011 3:20:31 PM
Looks like he was determined "Guilty" and sentenced to life. http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/10518672/I think that was likely the right choice for the jury in this case, even without all of the emotions involved. However, maybe I am overly skeptical, but the ATM photo doesn't prove to me that this guy was in the car, or that Eve was in the back seat. Can anyone else make out anything definitive from the photo?
12/20/2011 11:28:50 AM
IIRC, Lovette was the one driving the car and there were better ATM photos than the one posted on that link. The hat he wore in the photo was also recovered i believe. it's pretty cut and dry if you ask me. I'm just happy that justice has been served and neither of these two will ever see their freedom again.
12/20/2011 11:40:10 AM
Can you find those? I haven't seen them. I really do think they've got the right guy in this case, I was just shocked they were drawing such an assertive conclusion from THAT photo.
12/20/2011 11:52:40 AM
There's a lot more to it than the photo. IIRC, they found his DNA in the car and he had the murder weapon in his possession.
12/20/2011 12:41:40 PM
Yeah it was my understanding that evidence his involvement came mostly from DNA evidence and testimony of the other guy involved.
12/20/2011 12:42:45 PM
I wish they'd just hang kill these people via firing squad
12/20/2011 12:58:17 PM
Yeah, I haven't followed this case as closely as I would have liked, but I did see that there was some other evidence linking him to the crime. I was just hoping there was a clearer picture of him in the car. I mean, that would be enough for me, to vote Guilty. Cause even if he didn't pull the trigger, you've got him for kidnapping and larceny, and any death committed during commission of a felony is murder 1.Found a more clear picture:[Edited on December 20, 2011 at 1:27 PM. why even keep them alive? don't waste 30k+ a year..just gas the bastards
12/20/2011 3:31:20 PM
Since he wasn't 18 when he allegedly committed the crime he is not eligible for the death penalty. Also, it typically costs more to put someone to death than it does to just keep them alive in prison for the rest of their life.
12/20/2011 3:33:10 PM
It's the economic principle known as the Time Value of Murderers.
12/20/2011 3:36:34 PM
12/20/2011 3:44:08 PM
^ditto. it wouldn't HAVE to be that expensive if they would stop keeping people on death row for 20 years after DNA has proven them guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt.
12/20/2011 3:51:58 PM
yes, lets just ignore due process and put the guy to death

12/20/2011 3:55:22 PM
12/20/2011 3:55:39 PM
and even then, it's a bullshit statistic, as the mandatory appeals aren't given to the guys with life in prison, so you have an apples to oranges comparison. which was my point.but, I'm with you about not really trusting the system at this point. The Brad Cooper case, as much as I hate to say it, really opened my eyes about how fucked up the system is
12/20/2011 4:02:04 PM
That was the exact case that changed my viewpoint (big surprise to anyone who followed my posts during that trial).
12/20/2011 4:03:00 PM
Death is an easy out for them. Much rather let these fuckers suffer in prison for life.

I haven't been following this particular case, but this article will really make you think about using the death penalty in today's society (and likely make you very angry).http://reason.com/archives/2011/06/07/wrongful-convictionsIn theory, I'm for the death penalty. But in reality...the state of our current justice system makes me think that the death penalty should only be reserved for absolutely clear-cut cases where there is positively no mistaking what happened and who committed the crime (meaning: clear video of the crime being committed and who was involved, or something along those lines). Most of these Sherlock Holmes type cases where the prosecution has evidence exhibits A, B, and C, and they kind of point to the defendant (but maybe not), and there's a witness who is wishy-washy, and a blurry photo, yadda yadda...and then we find out that the prosecution or police conveniently left out something important that points to the defendant's innocence...I can't see having someone put to death in that environment. The fact that someone's life is literally hanging in the balance based on this crap evidence and the decision of 12 people who are likely morons is absolutely ridiculous. There is a special place in hell for overzealous prosecutors who withhold exculpatory evidence.[Edited on December 20, 2011 at 6:49 PM. As a general rule, the people in stock photos creep me out. I don't know if it's their blank eyes, their soulless smiles or their nonchalant willingness to have their likeness appear on literally any product or service that currently or will ever exist.
3/28/2012 11:50:57 PM
^^who is that?
3/28/2012 11:57:59 PM
I'll tell you who it's not, because photoshopping that person into the above ad would make me an even more horrible person than I am.

UNC student "journalist" says its Durham's fault that Eve Carson got murdered.Durham crime crosses over into Chapel Hill

^^^That is a horrible example of journalism but a fine piece of trolling
3/6/2013 10:52:51 AM
The irony is that Chapel Hill is a town that actually does cordon off it's entire perimeter with police checkpoints that exclude non-residents on Halloween every year. I'm not sure such restrictions of free travel are even legal in the United States, except during emergencies.
3/6/2013 11:29:08 AM
Durham people are why they don't have the apple chill festival anymore
